Definitions
- the present invention relates to a filter for a smoking article, comprising a filter part including lyocell tow having a phenol-reducing material dispersed therein, and a filter part wrapper formed of an oil-resistant paper (i.e., oil-resistant hard paper) having a range of a predetermined basis weight or more and surrounding the filter part, and a smoking article including the same.
- oil-resistant paper i.e., oil-resistant hard paper
- a typical cigarette filter contains cellulose acetate tow, which is made by extracting cellulose from wood pulp and acetylating it.
- cigarette filters are assembled into cigarette products, distributed to consumers, provided for smoking, and ultimately discarded after smoking the cigarette.
- cigarette filters are also directly discarded as manufacturing residue from cigarette filter manufacturing plants. These cigarette filter wastes are collected as waste and landfilled for processing. In addition, in some cases, cigarettes are not collected as waste and are left in the natural environment.
- phenol-reducing substance capable of specifically reducing phenols generated during smoking is added to reduce the phenol smoke component in mainstream smoke.
- phenol-reducing substances such as polyethylene glycol (hereinafter referred to as "PEG”), triethyl citrate (hereinafter referred to as “TEC”), and triacetin (hereinafter referred to as “TA”) are added to cellulose acetate tow.
- phenol-reducing substances such as PEG, TEC, and TA
- the lyocell fibers do not undergo plasticization. Accordingly, it was discovered that adding phenol-reducing substances such as PEG, TEC, and TA to lyocell fibers does not reduce biodegradability, but reduces the phenol smoke component in mainstream smoke.

- problems such as the hardness of the lyocell tow, which includes the lyocell fibers, being reduced due to lack of plasticization, resulting in filter collapse, etc.
- a solution has been proposed to provide a predetermined hardness to the filter for smoking articles by wrapping the filter part wrapper covering the lyocell tow using a high basis weight paper referred to as hard paper when manufacturing a filter for smoking articles.
- hard paper has a higher basis weight than general paper and provides a certain hardness to the filter for smoking articles, but there is a problem in that the phenol reduction performance of the filter for smoking articles is reduced as the phenol reduction material dispersed in the lyocell tow is transferred and absorbed from the filter part including the lyocell tow to the filter paper (hereinafter, “filter part wrapper”).
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a filter for a smoking article, which can solve the hardness problem inherent in lyocell tow by configuring the filter part wrapper with a paper having a weight greater than a certain value and having an oil-resistant treatment on the surface (i.e., an oil-resistant hard paper).
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a filter for a smoking article, in which the filter part wrapper is composed of a paper having a weight equal to or greater than a certain value and having an oil-resistant treatment on the surface (i.e., an oil-resistant hard paper), thereby minimizing the amount of a phenol-reducing material transferred from a filter part including lyocell tow and a phenol-reducing material dispersed in the lyocell tow to the filter part wrapper, thereby more effectively removing components such as phenols present in cigarette smoke components during smoking and providing an excellent biodegradable filter for a smoking article.
- the filter part wrapper is composed of a paper having a weight equal to or greater than a certain value and having an oil-resistant treatment on the surface (i.e., an oil-resistant hard paper), thereby minimizing the amount of a phenol-reducing material transferred from a filter part including lyocell tow and a phenol-reducing material dispersed in the lyocell tow to

Accordingly, when at least one of PEG, TEC, and TA is included as the phenol reducing material, the lyocell fibers may not be plasticized by the phenol reducing material even though the phenol reducing material is applied on the surface of the lyocell fibers.
- a filter for a smoking article to which lyocell tow according to the present invention is applied can have a superior effect in reducing phenols generated during smoking compared to a filter for a smoking article to which a phenol reducing substance is not added, by including at least one phenol reducing substance among PEG, TEC, or TA dispersed on the lyocell tow.
- the polyethylene glycol (PEG) included in the phenol-reducing material can have a weight average molecular weight (M.W) of 50 to 10,000, 50 to 2500, 200 to 2000, 500 to 700, or 600.
- M.W weight average molecular weight
- the ratio of the contents of TEC and PEG may be, but is not limited to, 9:1 to 7:3.
- the filter for a smoking article may have different phenol reduction performance depending on the molecular weight of the polyethylene glycol (PEG) when the phenol reduction material dispersed in the lyocell tow includes polyethylene glycol (PEG). Specifically, when the polyethylene glycol (PEG) dispersed in the lyocell tow has a weight average molecular weight within the above range, the phenol reduction performance of the filter for a smoking article manufactured using the lyocell tow may be excellent.
- PEG polyethylene glycol
- the phenol reduction performance of the filter for a smoking article manufactured using the lyocell tow may be the best, but the molecular weight of the polyethylene glycol (PEG) is not limited thereto.
- the filter part wrapper (30b) can be arranged to surround the filter part (20).
- the filter part wrapper (30b) has a weight greater than a predetermined value and can be composed (manufactured) of an oil-resistant hard paper that has been oil-resistant treated.
- the filter part wrapper (30b) is composed of a hard paper having a weight greater than a predetermined value, it not only functions as a packaging material surrounding the filter part (20) including lyocell tow, but also can perform the function of providing a certain level of hardness or greater to the filter for a smoking article according to the present invention.
- the filter part (20) when the filter part (20) is composed of lyocell tow in which at least one phenol-reducing material among PEG, TEC, and TA is dispersed, the hardness of the lyocell tow may be reduced because the phenol-reducing material does not plasticize the lyocell fiber. Accordingly, the hardness of the filter for smoking articles may be supplemented by the filter part wrapper (30b) that wraps the filter part (20) being composed of a hard paper having a basis weight greater than a predetermined value.
- the filter portion wrapper (30b) may include a paper having a basis weight of 30 gsm to 180 gsm, 35 gsm to 170 gsm, 40 gsm to 160 gsm, 50 gsm to 158 gsm, 60 gsm to 155 gsm, 70 gsm to 150 gsm, or 75 gsm to 150 gsm.
- the filter portion wrapper (30b) is composed of a paper having a high basis weight
- the hardness of the filter portion (20) including the lyocell tow having the phenol-reducing material dispersed therein is supplemented by the filter portion wrapper (30b), so that the hardness of the filter for smoking articles is at a certain level or higher, thereby solving the problem of reduced hardness of the filter for smoking articles.
- the filter portion wrapper (30b) may be made of an oil-resistant paper having been subjected to an oil-resistant treatment.
- the oil-resistant treatment may be performed by applying an oil-resistant coating material to a paper having a weight greater than a predetermined value by a size-press method to impart oil resistance to the filter portion wrapper (30b).
- the oil-resistant coating material may include a Fluoracrylate Copolymer, but is not limited thereto, and the oil-resistant coating material is any material capable of imparting oil resistance to a hard paper and is not limited thereto.
- the filter part wrapper (30b) may include a first surface (or inner surface) facing the filter part (20) and a second surface (or outer surface) opposite the first surface (inner surface), and at least one surface of the inner surface and outer surface of the filter part wrapper (30b) may be subjected to an oil treatment.
- the oil-resistant treatment may be performed only on the inner surface of the filter part wrapper (30b) so that only the inner surface of the filter part wrapper (30b) has oil resistance
- the oil-resistant treatment may be performed only on the outer surface of the filter part wrapper (30b) so that only the outer surface of the filter part wrapper (30b) has oil resistance
- the oil-resistant treatment may be performed on both the inner and outer surfaces of the filter part wrapper (30b) so that both the inner and outer surfaces have oil resistance.
- the filter part wrapper (30b) Since the filter part wrapper (30b) is manufactured from a paper having been oil-resistant treated, the rate of transfer of the phenol-reducing material from the lyocell tow in which the phenol-reducing material is dispersed to the filter part wrapper (30b) can be minimized compared to paper having not been oil-resistant treated (i.e., not oil-resistant). Specifically, since the filter part wrapper (30b) has oil resistance as a result of being oil-resistant treated, the phenol-reducing material dispersed in the lyocell tow, which moves from the lyocell tow to the filter part wrapper (30b), can be prevented from being transferred to the filter part wrapper (30b).
- the phenol-reducing material on the lyocell tow can be prevented from being absorbed into the filter part wrapper (30b). Accordingly, it is possible to solve the problem of the filter part wrapper (30b) becoming wet with the phenol-reducing material, thereby lowering the hardness of the filter for smoking articles, or the problem of the residual amount of the phenol-reducing material remaining on the lyocell tow decreasing.
- the filter part wrapper (30b) can have an oil resistance of 8 or more, 9 or more, 10 or more, or 11 or more based on the 3M KIT method.
- the oil resistance of the filter part wrapper (30b) can be a value obtained by measuring the oil resistance of at least one of the outer surface and the inner surface of the filter part wrapper (30b).
- oil resistance treatment is performed on both the outer surface and the inner surface of the filter part wrapper (30b), and the oil resistances of the outer surface and the inner surface of the filter part wrapper (30b) can be 8 or more, 9 or more, 10 or more, or 11 or more, respectively. Since the filter part wrapper (30b) is composed of an oil resistant hard paper having the oil resistance, the amount of a phenol-reducing material transferred from the lyocell tow to the filter part wrapper (30b) can be reduced.
- the measurement of the induction resistance by the 3M KIT method was performed as follows. Specifically, in order to analyze the induction resistance of the paper, a solution for measuring the induction resistance was prepared using a method commonly used, and the solution was dropped onto the test piece. After a certain period of time, the induction resistance was judged as the highest solution number that did not leave oil marks on the test piece.
- the solution was prepared by mixing Castor oil, Toluene, and Heptane at a ratio determined by Kit Number as shown in [Table 1] below.
- Kit number Castor oil (mL) Toluene (mL) Heptane (mL) 1 200 0 0 2 180 10 10 3 160 20 20 4 140 30 5 120 40 40 6 100 50 50 7 80 60 60 8 60 70 70 9 40 80 80 10 20 90 90 11 0 100 100 12 0 90 110
- the test piece was tested starting with a reagent with a low Kit Number, and a drop of the manufactured reagent was dropped on the test piece. After 15 seconds, the dropped reagent was removed using a cotton swab or tissue, and then it was examined whether there was an oil stain. If no oil stain appeared, the experiment was continued while increasing the kit number until an oil stain appeared. The final kit number without an oil stain was applied to evaluate the oil resistance.
- the filter wrapper (30b) according to the embodiment can have an induction resistance of 8 or more, 9 or more, 10 or more, or 11 or more based on the 3M KIT method.
- a smoking article filter including a filter member (20) and a filter member wrapper (30b) surrounding the filter member according to the present invention may have a hardness of 93% to 99%, 93.5% to 98.5%, 94% to 98%, 94.3% to 97.8%, or 93.4 to 97%.
- the hardness of the smoking article filter is a value that quantifies the degree to which the diameter of the smoking article filter is maintained when the smoking article filter is pressed with a certain level of force in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the smoking article filter, and may be a value that is a percentage value that is a ratio between the diameter of the smoking article filter before applying the force and the diameter of the smoking article filter after applying the force.
- the filter for a smoking article comprises a filter part wrapper (30b) surrounding the filter part (20) and composed of an oil-resistant hard paper having a weight greater than a predetermined value and oil resistance, thereby supplementing the hardness of the lyocell tow and preventing the phenol-reducing material dispersed in the lyocell tow from being transferred to the filter part wrapper (30b), thereby preventing the filter part wrapper (30b) from being wetted by the phenol-reducing material, so that the filter for a smoking article can have the hardness range described above.
- the rate of migration of the phenol-reducing material into the filter part wrapper (30b), which is defined as a percentage of the weight of the phenol-reducing material included in the filter part wrapper (30b) with respect to the total weight of the phenol-reducing material included in the filter for the smoking article, may be 1% to 13%, 1.2% to 10%, 1.4% to 8%, 1.6% to 7%, 1.8% to 6%, 2% to 5%, or 3% to 4.5%.
- the total weight of the phenol-reducing material included in the filter for the smoking article may be calculated as the sum of the weight of the phenol-reducing material included in the filter part (20) and the weight of the phenol-reducing material included in the filter part wrapper (30b).
- a phenol-reducing material including TEC was added by spraying it at 50 mg/rod to lyocell tow, and then the lyocell tow in which TEC was dispersed was wrapped with an oil-resistant hard paper having a weight of 75 gsm and an inner and outer oil resistance of 11, thereby manufacturing a smoking article filter having a length of 126 mm.
- the oil resistance of the oil-resistant hard paper can be a value measured by the oil resistance measuring method described above.
- a filter for a smoking article was manufactured in the same manner as in Example 1, except that PEG 600 was used as the phenol-reducing material dispersed on the lyocell tow.
- a filter for a smoking article was manufactured in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the paper surrounding the lyocell tow was a general hard paper having a basis weight of 75 gsm and not subjected to an oil-proofing treatment.
- a filter for a smoking article was manufactured in the same manner as in Example 2, except that the paper surrounding the lyocell tow was a general hard paper having a basis weight of 75 gsm and not subjected to an oil-proofing treatment.
- Example 1 including the same phenol-reducing material, TEC
- the transfer rate of TEC from the filter part (20) to the filter part wrapper (30b) was significantly reduced from 26.5% to 4.3% compared to Comparative Example 1 due to the oil resistance of the filter part wrapper (30b)
- Example 2 including the same phenol-reducing material, PEG 600
- the transfer rate of PEG 600 from the filter part (20) to the filter part wrapper (30b) was significantly reduced from 14.3% to 3.8% compared to Comparative Example 2 due to the oil resistance of the filter part wrapper (30b).
- the residual amount of the phenol-reducing material included in the filter part (20) composed of lyocell tow can be increased in oil-resistant hard paper compared to general hard paper, thereby improving the phenol-reducing performance of the filter for smoking articles.
- a filter for a smoking article was manufactured in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the phenol-reducing agent including TEC was added by spraying it onto lyocell tow at 70 mg/rod instead of 50 mg/rod.
- a filter for smoking articles was manufactured in the same manner as in Comparative Example 1, except that the phenol-reducing material was not sprayed on the lyocell tow (i.e., the phenol-reducing material was not added to the filter section (20)).
- Smoking articles were manufactured using the smoking article filters of Comparative Examples 1-2 and Examples 1 and 3, and a cigarette smoking machine HAUNI LX20 manual (Linear type) was used as a smoking device, and smoke components smoked were captured using a Cambridge filter pad (CFP), and 30 mL of 1% acetic acid was added to the captured pad to extract substances, stirred, and filtered using a 0.45 ⁇ m PVDF syringe filter, and analyzed using an Alliance HPLC-FLD analyzer from Water Co. The results are shown in Table 4 below.
- Example 4 As shown in Table 4 above, it can be confirmed that the amount of phenol migration was significantly reduced in Comparative Example 1 and Example 1 in which a phenol reduction material (specifically, TEC) was dispersed in the lyocell tow, compared to Comparative Example 3 in which a phenol reduction material was not added to the lyocell tow. In addition, it can be confirmed that the amount of phenol migration was further reduced in Example 1 in which the filter part wrapper (30b) was made of an oil-resistant hard paper compared to Comparative Example 1 in which the filter part wrapper (30b) was made of a general hard paper.
- a phenol reduction material specifically, TEC
- Example 3 which has a larger amount of a phenol-reducing substance (specifically, TEC), has a better phenol-reducing effect than Example 1.
- the filter wrapper (30b) is made of an oil-resistant hard paper, compared to when it is made of a general hard paper, the amount of phenol-reducing material transferred from the lyocell tow to the hard paper is reduced, so that the phenol-reducing material remaining on the lyocell tow becomes optimal, and it can be expected that the phenol-reducing effect is excellent.
- a filter for a smoking article was manufactured in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the phenol-reducing material dispersed on the lyocell tow contained TEC and PEG in a ratio of 8:2.
- a filter for a smoking article was manufactured in the same manner as in Example 4, except that the paper surrounding the lyocell tow was a general hard paper having a basis weight of 75 gsm and not subjected to an oil treatment.
- Smoking articles were manufactured using the smoking article filters of Comparative Examples 3-4 and Example 4, and the hardness of the manufactured smoking article filters was measured, and the results are shown in Table 5 below.
- D is the filter diameter (mm)
- a represents the distance (mm) that a 300g weight descends (the filter is pressed).
- the measurement values necessary for calculating the hardness of the cigarette filter can be obtained using a device generally used in the relevant technical field, and for example, DHT 200 TM from Filtrona can be used.
- the force applied takes into account the force applied when an actual smoker holds a cigarette.
- the hardness value of 85% or more obtained through the cigarette filter according to one specific example of the present invention has technical significance in that it can secure a hardness at a level that can replace a cigarette filter composed of conventional cellulose acetate by using lyocell tow, which is an environmentally friendly material.
- Example 4 in which the filter part wrapper (30b) is made of oil-resistant hard paper, it can be confirmed that the hardness of the filter for smoking articles is higher than in Comparative Example 4, in which the filter part wrapper (30b) is made of general hard paper.
- Example 4 in which a phenol-reducing substance is added to lyocell tow, it can be confirmed that the hardness is maintained similarly to that of Comparative Example 3, in which a phenol-reducing substance is not added to lyocell tow.
