Definitions
- the invention relates to a RoRo or RoPax ship with two slow-running two-stroke engines arranged offset transversely to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship, which are each connected by means of a propeller shaft to a ship propeller arranged at the stern, wherein the propeller shafts are each arranged at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship, pointing outwards towards the stern.
- the invention therefore relates to a sea-going ship equipped for the transport of rolling cargo with or without passengers, which in the combination of rolling cargo with passengers is also referred to as a RoPax ferry, combi ferry or combi carrier.
- a RoRo ship designed in this way is known from the Ark Dania, for example.
- This ship has a two-stroke propulsion engine system consisting of 2x MAN 8S40ME-B9 propulsion engines, which are arranged directly next to each other and symmetrically to the ship's longitudinal axis, with the two propeller shafts arranged at the rear being aligned at an acute angle to the ship's longitudinal axis in the direction of the stern outwards, i.e. deviating from the ship's longitudinal axis towards the side of the ship.
- the disadvantage of this ship is a very wide machine shaft, which severely constricts the vehicle deck in the middle of the ship and thus significantly impairs the loading and unloading flow.
- the RoPax ferry “Stena Germanica” was converted at great technical and financial expense so that its two four-stroke diesel engines could run on both marine diesel and methanol in dual-fuel mode, thus meeting the stricter environmental guidelines that came into force on 1 January 2015.
- the “Lindanger” class of tankers was introduced in 2016, and The drive is a dual-fuel two-stroke engine that is more advantageous in the area of ship propulsion and runs on methanol.
- Two-stroke ship propulsion engines that use methanol and ammonia are already market-ready. The use of such fuels in four-stroke engines is technically much more demanding, and market readiness is lagging behind that of two-stroke propulsion engines.
- Mitsui OSK Lines is aware of plans to build a RoPax ship with a two-stroke engine, this is only a ferry for domestic travel, for which the international safety regulations of the IMO under SOLAS are not mandatory, such as the so-called Safe Return to Port requirement for a redundant propulsion system.
- a fundamental problem is that, for example, RoPax ships (unlike tankers) need to have two redundant propulsion systems for reasons of reliability, but these require a lot of space.
- the object of the invention is therefore to create a RoRo or RoPax ship with a propeller drive with two two-stroke engines, the construction of which requires only a small amount of work and material, whereby the drive should only require a small amount of space within the RoRo or RoPax ship.
- the basic idea of the invention is to create a RoRo or RoPax ship with a two-stroke propulsion system based on a twin engine system slightly offset one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the ship, with the two shaft trains and the propellers integrated into the system. This measure makes it possible to minimize the space required across the width of the RoRo or RoPax ship.
- the arrangement according to the invention facilitates a spatial separation of the two drive motors while simultaneously fulfilling leak stability regulations.
- a RoRo or RoPax vessel is proposed with two slow-running two-stroke engines arranged transversely to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax vessel, each of which is driven by a propeller shaft with a rear-mounted arranged ship propellers, wherein the propeller shafts are each directed at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship in the direction of the stern and the two-stroke engines are arranged one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the RoRo or RoPax ship, and wherein the width taken up by the two-stroke engines arranged one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the RoRo or RoPax ship in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the RoRo or RoPax ship, specifically perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship, is less than twice the width of a two-stroke engine.
- the width taken up by the two-stroke engines corresponds to a maximum of one and a half times the width of a two-stroke engine.
- the two-stroke engines are installed in a centrally arranged machine shaft, whereby the two-stroke engines extend vertically into the freeboard deck of the RoRo or RoPax ship and, due to the small overall width of both two-stroke engines, only take up a cargo space with a width of no more than four, preferably no more than three and most preferably no more than two truck vehicle lanes.
- the width of a truck vehicle lane is usually about 3.00 m to 3.20 m.
- two separate drive trains are therefore provided, it being understood in this arrangement that one drive train must be connected to one two-stroke engine and the associated ship's propeller by means of a propeller shaft which is longer than the propeller shaft of the other drive train connecting the other two-stroke engine to the other ship's propeller.
- the propeller shafts are each arranged at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the ship, with the propeller shafts running approximately from the center of the ship outwards (towards the respective side of the ship) and deviating from the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship.
- each propeller shaft runs outwards to the side of the RoRo or RoPax ship to which the associated two-stroke engine is offset. This creates an angle between the propeller shafts which, from a hydrodynamic point of view, should preferably be kept small, particularly preferably ⁇ 5°. This can easily be achieved by making the distance between the propellers and the two-stroke engines connected by means of the propeller shafts as large as possible.
- the two-stroke engines are preferably arranged in the center of the ship in relation to the longitudinal axis, particularly preferably towards the bow, so that the influence of a propeller shaft deviating from the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship is - -
- propeller angle remains low.
- the longitudinal axes of the two-stroke engines are not parallel but also aligned at an angle to each other.
- the acute angle formed by the propeller shafts to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax vessel is preferably identical, so that the required offset of the two-stroke engines along the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax vessel also provides sufficient space.
- the two-stroke engines have identical performance parameters, i.e. are essentially identical, i.e. of the same construction or of the same type.
- the two-stroke engines preferably have the same dimensions.
- the two-stroke engines are arranged in compartments that are separated from one another.
- the compartments are specifically designed as separate engine rooms, whereby each two-stroke engine can be operated independently of the other two-stroke engine (in an emergency).
- the compartments are separated by a partition wall designed as a bulkhead, which is designed in particular as a firewall.
- all walls forming the respective compartment, including the ceiling and floor, are designed as bulkheads, so that the RoRo or RoPax ship is highly fail-safe even when space is limited.

- Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of a preferred embodiment of a RoRo or RoPax ship according to the invention.
- Fig. 1 shows a RoRo or RoPax ship 10 with two slow-running two-stroke engines 20, 20', which are arranged one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the RoRo or RoPax ship 10 and - as can be clearly seen in the plan view shown in Fig. 2 - offset transversely to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship 10, wherein each two-stroke engine 20, 20' is connected by means of a propeller shaft 30, 30' to a ship propeller 40, 40' arranged at the rear.
- a propeller shaft 30' which is longer than the propeller shaft 30 connecting the other two-stroke engine 20 to the other ship's propeller 40.
- the two-stroke engines 20, 20' which in the embodiment are two-stroke engines of the same type, are preferably arranged in compartments (not shown) that are separated from one another, so that it is ensured that an engine failure of one two-stroke engine 20, 20' cannot spread to the other two-stroke engine 20, 20' and the RoRo or RoPax ship 10 remains maneuverable.
- the propeller shafts 30, 30' which are specifically designed to rotate in opposite directions, are - as can be seen from Fig. 2 - each arranged at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship 10, wherein the acute angle taken by the propeller shafts 30, 30' to the longitudinal axis of the RoRo or RoPax ship 10 is essentially identical.
- Fig. 3 which shows a cross-section through the RoRo or RoPax ship 10 shown above in the area of the two-stroke engines, illustrates that the width taken up by the two-stroke engines 20, 20' arranged one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the RoRo or RoPax ship 10 in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the RoRo or RoPax ship 10 is less than twice the width of a two-stroke engine 20, 20'.
- a space-saving arrangement of the two-stroke engines 20, 20' can thus be achieved with only a minor influence on the loading capacity with regard to the transport of freight and passengers.
- the two-stroke engines 20, 20' arranged in the engine shaft extend vertically into the freeboard deck of the RoRo or RoPax vessel 10, but only take up a cargo space on the freeboard deck with a width of two to three truck lanes.
