Device for attaching burnt electrodes to residual electrodes in electric ovens.

With the device according to the present invention it is possible to completely use up the electrodes in electric ovens, whereby the efficiency of the ovens is also significantly increased insofar as the thermal energy absorbed by the electrodes is not lost.

Electrodes which are connected to the power source by head or face mounts are widely used in electric furnaces. When using these sockets, the operation must be interrupted after a certain time, when the electrodes are used up, in order to insert new, cold electrodes into the furnace, while the more or less large remnants of the spent electrodes with the heat energy they have absorbed for the furnace operation get lost. To avoid these significant losses, holders were used to enclose the electrodes on the sides and attempts were made to nipple the new electrodes onto the burnt, hot electrode remains. However, this work turns out to be quite difficult over the hot oven, so that the proper execution of the nippling suffers.

The consequence of this is broken electrodes at the nipple point. To remedy this, the remaining electrodes were removed from the furnace and the new electrode was nippled outside the furnace. The furnace had to be switched off, the heat energy absorbed by the electrode residue was lost and considerable amounts of heat were extracted from the furnace in order to warm up the cold electrodes. In order to avoid these inconveniences, one then proceeded to make the electrodes by tamping above the furnace with the help of appropriate equipment in order to use them underneath in uninterrupted operations. The electrodes tamped over the furnace, however, have a lower density and therefore more burn-off; the electrical furnace operation is also burdened with essential ancillary work.

In addition, the tar fumes that develop when the green electrodes are burning lead to severe nuisance in the company.

According to the present invention, all these disadvantages are avoided by a special device for attaching burnt electrodes to residual electrodes. The lengthening of burned electrodes above the furnace is effected purely mechanically and ensures that the burned electrode in the furnace is completely used up in continuous operation and the new burned electrodes can be attached without interrupting furnace operation and without significant heat losses. For this purpose, the burnt electrode to be pieced on is inserted into a holding device, then brought exactly vertically over the remaining electrode in the factory and connected to it in a purely mechanical way by means of movement devices arranged outside the furnace.

For this purpose, a special holder is required for the remaining electrodes, with which it is possible to hold the electrodes by means of simple and quick-acting handles
