 EMI1.1

 EMI1.2
The glow discharge generated during the waking vacuum is fed by a relatively high auxiliary voltage that can be regulated depending on the desired vacuum, and its discharge current is used to display changes in the vacuum. With such a device, a Vorriehtung can also according to the invention

 discharge responds.

Embodiments of such a device are illustrated in the drawing, u. between. Fig. 1 shows in section the device itself and the associated viewing diagram, Fig. 2 shows a curve
 EMI1.4
 Contraption.

The invention is generally suitable for monitoring the vacuum in evacuated containers, but is primarily intended for large-scale mercury vapor rectifiers. Such a rectifier 4 is shown partially in section in FIG. As usual, it is driven by the secondary winding of a main
 EMI1.5
is vented either continuously or intermittently by a pump device which is connected at 11 and which as a rule maintains a pressure of a few microns of mercury in the container.

The glow discharge device 13, which is connected to the main vacuum through a pipe 14, is used to monitor the vacuum in the rectifier. It contains an upper electrode 15 and a lower electrode 16. Each of these electrodes consists of a base plate 17 or 18 and a flat central button 19 or 20 projecting therefrom. The projections 19, 20 of the two electrodes face one another, u. between at a distance of about 20-25 mm. For easier manufacture, the bottom electrode 16 is in two parts, namely its elevation 20 is designed as a special disk which is fitted into the connecting pipe 14 with a pin 21.

The two electrodes 15 and 16 are kept at the correct distance from one another by an insulating ring 23 (glass or porcelain), which encloses the buttons 19 and 20 as tightly as possible,
 EMI1.6
separated by rubber washers 24 or other vacuum-proof seals which are pressed on by insulated bolts 25. The seal is very easy to produce because the device works continuously at room temperature.

An electromotive force in the order of magnitude of 500 to 5000 or more volts is applied to the electrodes 15, 16 by a step-up transformer 28 which can be provided with a voltage regulator 29 in order to set the pressure at which the glow discharge device begins to operate. In the illustrated embodiment, this transformer 28 is excited by the 110 volt auxiliary rail of the synchronizing system.

If a glow discharge device fails with regard to voltage, vacuum and electrode
 EMI1.7

 EMI2.1
the applied voltage does not have enough gas molecules to generate the ionization necessary to initiate glow discharge; On the other hand, if the gas pressure and thus the number of gas molecules is too high, the electrons are stopped by colliding with gas molecules before they do
 EMI2.2
 generate ionization.

FIG. 2 shows a curve 33 which shows the relationship between the breakdown voltage and the air pressure, u. between a discharge path, the electrodes of which are about 25 mm apart
 EMI2.3
has grown. The same lowest discharge voltage can therefore be achieved with different electrode spacings, but in each case a given flashover voltage is achieved at lower air pressure for a larger electrode spacing.

For the reason mentioned above, the electrodes JJ, M according to the invention are provided with effective parts 19 and 20 which are fitted as tightly as possible into the insulating ring 23 in order to prevent the discharge path from being broken down by electrons due to the different discharge distances trying to move from the sides of one electrode to the sides of the other.
 EMI2.4
connects space to the tube 14, or, more generally speaking, a path in which there is no electric field and which is designed to collect all ions and electrons so that no electrons can pass from the top electrode 19 to points,

which lie at different distances along the inner wall of the tube 14.

To indicate the breakthrough of the discharge paths is a relay? provided, which can be a current relay or, as indicated in the drawing, a wattrelay which closes a contact 41 depending on the small amount of energy that is dissipated in the glow discharge device when a discharge current passes through it. The relay is advantageously located in the primary circuits of the step-up transformer 28 because of the stronger currents available therein, while the secondary discharge currents are only in the order of magnitude of a few milliamperes at about 5000 volts.

   The relay?
 EMI2.5
the discharge fluctuates somewhat, and because it is desirable to prevent the relay from opening and closing too often before it reaches steady-state. The relay contact 41, when it is closed, is used to energize the opening coil 10 of the main switch 8 in order to switch off the rectifier according to a predetermined increase in its gas pressure. When the contact J1 closes, a relay 42 is also energized, which de-energizes the closing coil 9 of the main switch 8 and to which a line 43 is connected which leads to the control device (not shown) provided at the substation.

In operation, the rectifier can be turned off by the relay 40 responding to the glow discharge when the pressure rises to a predetermined level, which z. B. corresponds to a mercury column of 15-20 microns.
 EMI2.6
Attach directly above the ceiling of the rectifier, either between two anodes or within the anode ring.

From Fig. 2 it can be seen that the glow discharge when applying about 5000 volts to the electrode

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 EMI3.1
Line 46 in Fig. 2 is indicated, prevents re-setting while the glow discharge continues, but is interrupted again when the pressure is increased beyond point 45.

Such an additional device can be a simple manometer or a mercury switch,
 EMI3.2
close with a second column of mercury 49, corresponding to the excessive increase in the gas pressure to be measured. This closes the circuit 50 of the locking relay 42,
The glow discharge device can also be designed according to FIG.

Here, instead of the fixed electrode 20 of FIG. 1, a cup-shaped metal electrode 60 is provided and, as the second electrode, an axially downwardly extending wire 61 which is tightly enclosed by an insulating sleeve 6 so that only its outermost tip 65 remains free. A carbon and graphite cap 64 is pushed over this wire tip 63 to extend its service life. The glow discharge space is connected to the tube 14a leading to the rectifier vault by a multiply kinked channel 37a which makes the electron transfer difficult. Otherwise, the device according to FIG. 4 is constructed like that shown in FIG.

In operation, the device of FIG. 4 produces a very sharp flashover at or near the surface of the tip electrode 64. Due to the hole-concentrated field near the tip electrode, this discharge device can react much more sensitively to changes in gas pressure than a device whose field is formed evenly, albeit devices of the latter
Art have proven themselves in practical operations.

A peculiarity of the peak discharge, which could be regarded as disadvantageous, is that it has a rectifying effect which is undesirable for high-speed relays and therefore two devices of this type acting in opposite directions must be provided if one is not using a relay that is slower works as that in the non-rectifying discharge device 45 according to FIG. 1, so that unnecessarily frequent play of the relay is avoided.
