  Procedure for tuning bell.

One of the factors that determine the pitch and tone of a bell is the thickness of the bell wall. Therefore, in order to tune bells to the desired pitch, the wall thickness on the brass knuckles is correspondingly reduced by removing material from the inside of the bell by grinding or turning it out. However, the effectiveness of this working process is relatively imperfect and not suitable for achieving a uniform change in the main and secondary tones. When grinding and turning, it is very difficult to change the wall thickness precisely because of the complicated shape of the bell. When sanding, steps can occur on the wall so that the wall thickness does not correspond to the acoustically correct conditions.

When turning, eccentric machining can also have an unfavorable effect on the wall thickness ratios.

The invention relates to a method which can avoid these disadvantages.

It consists in the fact that the wall thickness is changed chemically. This not only achieves a uniform change in the wall thickness of the entire bell jacket, but also speeds up and makes the work considerably cheaper than turning or grinding.

The simplest embodiment of the method is that the bell, upside down, with a corrosive liquid, e.g. B. hydrochloric acid is filled. This liquid changes the wall thickness of the bell quite evenly by dissolving material. The extent of the reduction depends partly on the duration of the action and partly on the concentration of the liquid and can be determined by choosing these two factors accordingly.

If for any reason it appears desirable to change the wall thickness only in zones, this can easily be done by filling the part at the bottom of the upside-down bell with a neutral mass and then admitting only as much corrosive liquid as the height corresponds to the jacket zone to be weakened, or that the parts whose wall thickness should remain unchanged are provided with a protective coating.

Another embodiment of the method consists in that the wall thickness is changed by electrolysis. The bell is filled with an electrolyte, e.g. B. hydrochloric acid, and immersed in this the electrode connected to one pole of the power source, while the second electrode is formed by the bell itself. Depending on the direction of the electric current, the wall thickness can be reduced or increased. When hydrochloric acid is used as the electrolyte, the wall thickness is reduced by electrolysis and by etching. However, electrolytes which are not corrosive can also be used.
