Process for deoxidizing nickel and nickel alloys.

When melting nickel and nickel alloys, such as German silver, it is known that the sulfur is removed by adding magnesium to the melt. However, working with the addition of magnesium has the disadvantage that there are still residues of oxygen which combine with the magnesium and thereby deprive part of it of its task of binding sulfur. It has been found that these difficulties can be overcome very easily by adding lithium, which has recently been used as a deoxidizer for copper.

The deoxidation of nickel with lithium usually takes place in three stages:
It is pre-deoxidized with manganese or zinc, then the rest of the oxygen is removed with lithium and finally the calculated amount of magnesium is added to bind the sulfur. Under appropriate circumstances it is possible to omit the pre-deoxidation with manganese or zinc or the addition of magnesium.

Lithium has already been used as a deoxidizer together with beryllium. However, the purpose of the present process cannot be achieved because beryllium forms unmelted skins, which virtually counteract the cleaning effect of lithium.

With regard to the addition of magnesium, it should be noted that one usually only works with the cheaper deoxidizer (here magnesium). It was surprising that it is precisely when this sequence is reversed that particularly favorable effects can be achieved.

In most cases, an addition of lithium in the amount of 0'001-0'1% of the metal amount is used, but larger amounts of lithium can also be incorporated, which then significantly influence the properties of the nickel.

The advantages of the process with regard to the properties of the product are: greater constancy of quality, achievement of a denser casting and increased softness and deep-drawability of the metal or, with higher additions of lithium, greater hardness and strength.

The process is used for nickel alloys in the same way as for nickel.
