Process for the production of water-soluble protein compounds.

It is known that water-soluble protein compounds can be produced by the action of alkylene oxides on protein bodies such as casein. Keratin or the like. Can produce at ordinary or slightly elevated temperature (see American patent specification No. 1596785).

It has now been found that if alkylene oxides are allowed to act on protein bodies in an aqueous alkaline solution or suspension, rearrangements, the formation of polymerization products and other undesirable side reactions are avoided. The use of aqueous alkalis in the reaction with alkylene oxides has the advantage that the violent reaction is slowed down more and that the reaction can be carried out in open vessels.

It was surprising and unforeseeable that the reaction would proceed smoothly, since alkylene oxides are known to react readily with water to form the corresponding glycols.

The products manufactured by the present process are intended to be used as textile auxiliaries.

Example 1: 1 part by weight of casein is rubbed with 6 parts by weight of water and dispersed in a bomb at 800 with the addition of wetting agents. After 2 parts by weight of 8% sodium hydroxide solution have been added, the whole is introduced into a kneading and mixing machine and at 30 3 parts by weight 20% ethylene oxide water is allowed to slowly act on the casein.

The resulting reaction product can be isolated from the reaction mixture either by neutralizing the alkali and evaporating the mixture to dryness, or by adding methanol to the reaction mixture, the reaction product being precipitated.

The reaction product is a colorless powder, which is clearly soluble in water, is resistant to stretching and is suitable for emulsifying fats and waxes.

Example 2: 100 parts by weight of horn meal are slurried in 800 parts by weight of water to which 5 parts by weight of sodium hydroxide solution (40 Bé) have been added. Ethylene oxide is introduced into the mixture with gentle heating and stirring until a homogeneous solution has formed. After neutralization, the solution is evaporated to dryness.

The reaction product is a water-soluble, dry powder.

Example 3: 100 parts by weight of wool are heated with a solution of 200 parts by weight of propylene oxide and 10 parts by weight of sodium hydroxide solution (400 Bé) in 800 parts by weight of water in a bomb with stirring to 60-70 °. The resulting solution is evaporated to dryness after neutralization.

A more or less dark brown colored syrup is obtained.
