Process for the production of metal containers or cases, in particular cartridge cases.

which has exactly the dimensions of the sleeve body to be obtained with the desired wall thickness.
The purpose of the second step is to close the sleeve body at its end, i. H. the formation of the case base. This operation is carried out on the rear part of the pipe that was not shaped by the first operation. The device intended to carry out this operation is mounted between two heads of a double-acting press and essentially consists of one
Punch 1, which is slidable in a guide 2 fixedly connected to the frame 3 of the press; a hollow mandrel 4 which can be displaced in a guide J which is also firmly connected to the frame 3 and which forms a die with its front end 6; from a counter punch 7 guided inside the mandrel 4 and finally from a heating device.
The heating source of the heating device is arranged in an annular space 8 which surrounds a metallic mass 9, also of annular shape, the inner cylindrical surface of which is in contact with the outer part of the heating matrix 6 in order to ensure the heat transfer. The heating element is protected from heat loss by an insulating sleeve 10 and consists either of an electrical resistor or a circulating system of hot gases or of any other suitable system.
The mode of operation is as follows: While the hollow mandrel 4 together with the counter punch 7 is pulled out of the guide 5, the pipe section is inserted into the mandrel and pushed onto the counter punch. The first movement of the press pushes the unit formed by the counter punch, the mandrel and the tube into the guide 5 until it reaches the position according to FIG. 1 and holds it in this position. The pipe section thus assumes the position indicated by 11.
During the second movement of the press, the punch 1 moves in the guide 2 and reaches the position according to FIG. 2. The metal of the pipe part extending beyond the mandrel 4 is compressed and forms a solid base 12, the shape of which corresponds to the space between the Counter punch 7 corresponds to punch 1 and die 6. During this operation, the heat of the heating element, which is added to the heating resulting from the upsetting effect of the punch, is transferred from the metal mass 9 through the line to the thus heated die 6, whereby the upsetting of the metal intended for the formation of the bottom is facilitated.
The metal behaves like a plastic material and forms a bead that thickens towards the center and closes together, whereby the compressed material is welded and receives a full molecular connection in the closing zone. In this way, the metal is completely modeled between the punch and the counter-punch, so that it takes on the exact shape of the case base (FIG. 2). The sleeve is pulled out after the mandrel 4 together with the counter punch 7 has been brought out of engagement with the guide 5.
The method is applicable to all types of tubes and containers, e.g. B. on cartridge case, gas bottles, etc. It can with all metals, z. B. brass, aluminum alloys, steel, etc. can be carried out. The container can then be subjected to finishing, which essentially consists of turning off the bottom in order to remove excess material and any burrs. If it is a question of the production of metallic containers, the body of which has no differences in wall thickness, the first step is of course superfluous and the method is limited to the second step described above.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for the production of metal containers or sleeves, in particular a cartridge case, from a drawn pipe section, characterized in that the pipe section is held in a hollow mandrel (4) by a stationary counter-punch (7) introduced into the same so that the for formation The pipe part required of the bottom protrudes beyond the mandrel and this pipe part is compressed by a movable punch (1), this pipe part being surrounded by a heated die, so that, as a result of the heat transferred from this die through conduction, the immersed metal looks like a plastic material behaves and closes the pipe by forming a solid base, which takes exactly the shape of the space between the heated die,
the stationary counter punch and the movable punch at the end of the stroke of the latter.
