Dichtungsflüssigkeit in beiden Räumen gleich hoch.

Shaft seal for hydrogen-cooled electrical machines
In hydrogen-cooled machines, the seal makes the penetration through the housing
Waves particular difficulties, insofar as the usual seals when running the
Machine probably close off the inside sufficiently, but when it comes to a standstill, it slackens in its effect, so that one is forced to leave the standstill
Machines remove the filling gas, which is not only very time consuming but because of the
Risk of oxyhydrogen formation also very dangerous
Work is so that one had to provide neutral gases as intermediate filling. Only during the
Running of the machine works in particular that seal already proposed for hydrogen-cooled machines, in which a liquid, e.g.

   B. oil, containing sealing space surrounds the shaft as an inwardly open channel and the liquid is obtained by a plunging disk firmly connected to the shaft in rotation, such that the liquid ring created by centrifugal force forms the gas-tight seal. The usual seals, e.g. For example, those in which the sealing fluid is under hydrostatic or pump pressure were only designed for small pressure differences, so that the pressure in the machine could only be kept slightly above the external pressure and the much better cooling effect of hydrogen at higher pressures could not be used was.

These difficulties can be avoided if, according to the invention, a seal independent of the running of the machine is achieved in that the sealing liquid, preferably oil, is tangentially injected into the sealing space under pressure and circulates in this space at very high speed. As a result of the effect of the centrifugal force, the oil then behaves like a liquid of very high density and the static overpressure inside the housing causes only minor differences in the oil level on the inside and outside of the sealing surface. The figure shows an example of such a seal. 1 is the shaft of the machine on which a disc 2 is tightly fitted.

This disk extends into an annular space 4 connected to the housing 3 of the machine.
The oil is injected tangentially into this annular space and circulates in it at high speed. As a result of the centrifugal force, the oil is held in the outer part of the annular space and fulfills the two through disk 2 and the
Annular space 4 formed communicating spaces.

With the same internal and external pressure, the
Sealing liquid is the same in both rooms. In the event of unequal pressures, the sealing liquid in the space with low pressure will rise higher until equilibrium is restored. The size of the difference in
The liquid level depends on the size of the volume forces acting on the liquid. If these are of the order of magnitude of the force of gravity, then even with pressure differences of one atmosphere there will be mirror differences of the order of magnitude of several meters. Through the circulation of the sealing liquid, the
Volume power increased many times over and, accordingly, the mirror difference on the
Can be reduced by the order of centimeters. The oil circulation is thereby through a
Maintain auxiliary pump.

The excess oil emerges from the annular space and is collected in the collecting space 5 and sucked out of it. The oil can be prevented from creeping further along the shaft by using additional washers 6 and 7 on the shaft. The type of seal described is not limited to electrical machines, but can be used in all cases where the task is to lead a shaft through a wall in a gas-tight manner.

The seal according to the invention can also cope with pressure differences of several atmospheres. Machines equipped with this can be operated with high hydrogen pressures, which results in a significant increase in the cooling effect.
