<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Electric hand tools, in particular for woodworking
The invention relates to electric hand tools, in particular for woodworking. So far, such hand tools have not been provided with protective devices because the motor protection switches known for this are associated with the great disadvantage that they unpredictably switch the motor off and on. This puts the workpiece and the worker at risk.
The aim of the invention is to avoid these disadvantages and to create an operationally safe hand tool which is provided with a simple signal device. This is achieved according to the invention in that a bimetallic strip forms the movable contact and a threaded pin inserted in the machine housing forms the fixed contact of a thermal switch which, in a known manner, switches a signal lamp on and off depending on the temperature of the motor winding. The invention also relates to an embodiment of the protective device.
In the drawing, the subject matter of the invention is shown in an exemplary embodiment. 1 shows a circuit diagram of a hand tool, insofar as it relates to the signaling device, and FIG. 2 shows a section through part of the hand tool.
In the circuit diagram of FIG. 1, the delta-connected stator windings of the motor are denoted by 1. A coil 2 inductively coupled to a stator winding serves as the voltage source for the signal flow circuit. One end of this coil is connected to the housing 7 of the motor via the two contacts 3, 4 of a thermal switch. The other end of the coil 2 is connected to one pole of a lamp 8 ′, the other pole of which is also connected to the housing 7.
Contact 4 represents the fixed contact of the thermal switch, which is arranged on the machine housing. The contact 3 forms the movable contact of the thermal switch, which is moved by the heating of the winding head.
The structure of the thermal switch can be seen from FIG. A bimetallic strip is angular in shape, one leg 11 being bandaged in the winding head and its end being connected to one end of the coil 2. This connection is not shown in the drawing. The second leg 10 of the bimetallic strip acts on a pressure switch, the cylindrical housing 15 of which is provided with an external thread and is screwed into a threaded hole in the machine housing 7. It forms a pot that is directed into the interior of the machine housing and into which a hollow insulating piece 16 is pressed.

Slidable contact mushrooms at the end of an insulating washer 20.
The stem of the contact mushroom 19 protruding through a bore in the insulating piece 16 into the interior of the machine housing rests against the free end of the leg 10 of the bimetallic strip. A threaded pin 21, which is electrically connected to the machine housing 7, is screwed into a threaded hole in the bottom of the pot-shaped switch housing 15.
By arranging the two contacts 21 and 19 'in a tightly closed housing, it is avoided that the contact surfaces get dusty and thus lead to failure of the thermal switch, which is particularly important in the case of motors with open air. If this advantage is foregone, the threaded pin 21 can be screwed directly into the machine housing 7 and interact directly with the leg 10 of the bimetallic strip.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment shown. The bimetal strip can

also be arranged so that the angle enclosed by its two legs becomes smaller when heated. The contact 13 is then touched in the normal state by the leg 10 of the strip. The bimetal strip does not always have to be live if the leg 10 of the strip is used purely as an actuator for a switch. The strip can also be arranged in a manner other than in a winding plane and transverse to the windings. Finally, it is conceivable to use other heat-sensitive parts than bimetal, which change their shape or their size under the action of heat.
