phenolic hydroxyls under the reaction conditions used.
The triphenylenes and tetraphenylenes used to prepare the new compounds are known. The triphenylene compounds can be prepared by reacting a monohydroxy or polyhydroxy phenol with an unsaturated aldehyde such as acrolein, ethyl acrolein or crotonaldehyde. The phenols must have at least one reactive site in the 0- or p-position to a phenolic hydroxyl and can contain one or more monovalent radicals, such as alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy or additional phenolic hydroxyl groups, instead of water atoms in the benzene ring.
Examples of alkyl- and cycloalkyl-substituted phenols are: cresols, xylenols, 2,3, 5,6-tetramethylphenol, ethyl- and diethylphenols, butyl- and dibutylphenols, amylphenols, octylphenol, p-cyclohexylphenol, 2,6-dicyclohexylphenol, cyclopentylphenol and cyclopentylphenol . Examples of the mono- and polyalkoxy-substituted phenols are the isomeric methoxy-, ethoxy- and butoxyphenols and pyrogallol-1,3-dimethyl ether. Examples of phenols which contain more than one phenolic hydroxyl are: resorcinol, pyrogallol, phloroglucinol, pyrocatechol, hydroquinone, phenols with different radicals on the benzene nucleus are e.g.
B. Orcin, methyl phloroglucin, 4, 6-mesorcin, 2, 5, 6-trimethylresorcin, 4-ethyl-5, 6-dimethylresorcin, eugenol and isoeugenol. The tetraphenylene compounds can be prepared by condensation of a suitable dialdehyde such as glyoxal or glutaraldehyde with a suitable phenol such as mentioned above in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
It should be pointed out that the polyphenylene compounds used for the purposes according to the invention can be individual compounds of a defined composition or a mixture of isomers with a low proportion of higher molecular weight condensation products.

1, wrote triphenylene and tetraphenylene compounds with ethylene oxide or 1,2-propylene oxide or their mixtures in the presence of a small amount of catalyst. The reactants and the catalyst can be added to the reaction vessel in any order or simultaneously. The reaction is preferably carried out at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure at 110 to 1700C.
The reaction can be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. B. tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide, dioxane, etc., can be carried out. Any conventional heat transfer medium can be employed to remove some or all of the exothermic heat of reaction.
The proportion of alkylene oxide to be reacted with the polyphenylenes is given by the average molecular weight of the desired product. For the new reaction products described here which are used as intermediates in the production of foams, the molecular weights, based on the hydroxyl number, can vary between 450 and 10,000 or more. In order to obtain products with the desired molecular weights, the triphenylene and tetraphenylene starting materials are treated with the 1,2-alkylene oxide until each adduct represented in the above formula I by- (OR4). OH is represented, contains at least 1 mole of alkylene oxide.
Within these limits, the addition of alkylene oxide to any phenolic hydroxyl can be balanced or unbalanced; H. each can contain approximately the same or a different number of alkylene oxide groups per chain. For high molecular weight products, the total number of moles of alkylene oxide reacted with each phenolic hydroxyl can vary between 1 and 100 moles or more.
The time required for the alkylene oxide addition to complete will vary. In general, more time is required for the alkylene oxide addition for high molecular weight adducts than for low molecular weight products. At temperatures lower than those given above, the alkylene oxide addition can require a practically inapplicable time of several weeks for products with a molecular weight of 10,000 or more.
In carrying out the alkylene oxide reaction with the triphenylene and tetraphenylene compounds, any of the catalysts known for this type of addition reaction can be used. The preferred catalysts are alkaline catalysts, e.g. B. alkali metal catalysts such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, which cause the phenolic hydroxyl groups to react better than the aliphatic hydroxyl groups. The amount of catalyst used is preferably in the range from 0.002 to 2.0% by weight, based on the total amount of the reactants, including the alkylene oxide or mixtures thereof, which appear in the reaction product.
An amount of the active catalyst within this range is not so large that it could cause excessive decomposition of the alkylene oxide addition product of the main reaction. Good results were obtained with 0.03 to 0.05% by weight of sodium or potassium hydroxide, based on the total amount of the reactants. An active catalyst is understood to be the amount of catalyst present which has the alkalinity in the order of magnitude of the alkali metal hydroxides. In general, the greater its alkalinity, the less catalyst will be required. It is also possible to add some of the catalyst at the start of the reaction and the remainder from time to time during the course of the reaction in order to maintain an essentially constant catalyst concentration.
The molecular weight of the new compounds depends on the amount of alkylene oxide used for the reaction. The average molecular weight and the reactivity of the tris- and tetrakisi hydroxypolyalkylenoxyphenyl> alkanes produced in this way can be determined by determining the hydroxyl number, which is a measure and proportional to the hydroxyl concentration per unit weight. The hydroxyl number is defined as mg KOH equivalents / g alkylene oxide polyphenylene reaction product. It is determined by the reaction of acetic anhydride in pyridine solution with the hydroxyl groups. of the alkylene oxide-polyphenylene reaction product at reflux temperature.
The unreacted anhydride and the acetic acid formed are titrated with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution using phenolphthalein as an indicator.

The tris- and tetrakis- (hydroxypolyalkylenoxyphenyl) alkanes can advantageously be used as intermediates for a large number of elastomers and solid, semi-rigid and flexible polyurethane foams which can be produced from relatively cheap and accessible starting materials. Polyurethane foams, which are made from the new compounds by reacting the terminal hydroxyl groups with polyisocyanates, have superior low-temperature properties when compared with foams made e.g. B. by isocyanate modification of dicarboxylic acid triol polyesters.
Although alkylene oxides have previously been reacted with various bisphenols and phenol-aldehyde resins to produce derivatives of the phenolic starting substances, the compounds obtained according to the invention also differ largely from such products in their various structure and physical properties, which, on the other hand, are excellent for the production of polyurethane foams and elastomers. Solid foams produced from the compounds according to the invention have a more uniform curing rate and better foaming properties than those produced from alkylene oxide reaction products with phenol-aldehyde resins and bis-phenols. The latter tend to foam too slowly and / or cure too quickly.
The advantages and the usefulness of the process according to the invention and their products are further evident from the following examples, which currently contain the best ways to carry out the process according to the invention. In the following examples all of the tris and tetrakis (hydroxypolyalkyleneoxyphenyl) alkanes were prepared at atmospheric pressure and without a solvent. The work was carried out in a suitable large flask fitted with a stirrer and a dry ice-acetone condenser. Ethylene oxide was added as a gas by passing it through a pipe which was immersed in the molten polyphenylene compound. Propylene oxide was added in liquid form through a dropping funnel. The alkali metal hydroxide used as a catalyst was triturated or added in a water-methanol solution.
The tri- and tetraphenylene starting materials were freed of impurities in vacuo. After the reaction with alkylene oxide, the alkali catalyst was neutralized with phosphoric acid to a pH of 3.0 to 6.0. After neutralization, the product was treated in vacuo.
