Process for improving color rendering in color photographic materials
In the production of colored images by color development of exposed halide silver emulsion layers, a colored image is formed in addition to the silver image through reaction of the oxidation products of the developer with simultaneously present color couplers. For the generation of yellow and purple images, inter alia, compounds with activated methylene groups are used as color couplers, e.g. B. acetoacetic ester derivatives or pyrazolone derivatives. Phenols and naphthols, among others, are used to produce blue-green images.
A large number of embodiments of this principle have become known.
With these processes, however, in addition to the desired image-wise color development, a number of undesirable effects always occur due to uncontrolled reaction of the oxidized color developer. Every color development is associated with the formation of a more or less high color haze. The diffusion of the oxidized color developer into neighboring layers and domes with the component stored there, known as a strikethrough effect in multilayer materials, leads to a blackening of the colors. The color developer which is not completely watered out after development causes in oxidizing baths such. B. bleach baths, so-called bleach veils. A color component can also result in a gradation that is too steep during color development with otherwise favorable properties.
A number of methods have been proposed to remedy these shortcomings. So z. B. in the French Patent Specification No. 1,112,594 ascorbic acid recommended for reducing color haze. Have the same purpose. n U.S. Patents No. 2, 732, 300 and No. 2, 735, 765 with diffusion-resistant hydroquinone derivatives.
EMI1.1
chemical materials and baths in which a hydrogen atom in the coupling active methylene group is replaced by an aliphatic, aromatic or mixed aromatic-aliphatic radical. Compounds of this type couple with oxidized color developer not to give colored, but to colorless coupling products. Examples of such compounds are 1-phenyl-3, 4-dimethylpyrazolone, α-methylacetoacetic ester, ct-cyanopropiophenone.
Since this process involves a competing coupling of the colorless coupling connections with the color couplers, great care must be taken when selecting the partners: colorless coupling connection / color coupler.
It has now been found. that, under the conditions of photographic development, stable colorless or almost colorless coupling products and thus an improvement in color rendering are obtained if, according to the invention, color development is carried out in the presence of compounds of the general formula

is made where R is alkyl, substituted alkyl, e.g. B. -CHCHCN, -CHCHCOOH, aralkyl and R and R2 denote hydrogen or any substituents, preferably groups which make them water-soluble and / or make diffusion-proof.
EMI2.2
The proposed compounds represent a valuable addition to the components described in Austrian patent specification No. 201431. In cases where the compounds proposed there do not lead to optimal results, favorable results can often be achieved with the naphthols according to the invention. Compounds of this type can be used wherever the trapping of undesired oxidation products of the color developer seems appropriate. For example, they can be incorporated in a diffusion-proof form in a separating layer between two photographic layers which contain color couplers in order to intercept the color developer diffusing from one layer into the other.
The compounds can also be incorporated in a diffusion-proof form together with the color couplers in the halogen silver emulsion layer or in the color developer solution and / or the bleach bath or pre- or. Intermediate baths are added. The 13-naphthols described can also be emulsified into the photographic layers in solution in high-boiling solvents. The compounds can be used in particular as an additive to the so-called mixed grain emulsions for color photographic single-layer materials.
EMI2.3
when used in bleach baths prevents the appearance of bleaching veils. Another major advantage of the compounds is that they can be used to control the color gradation.
As a color developer, all known color developing agents with primary amino groups can be used, such as. B. p-phenylenediamine and its derivatives, p-aminophenol and derivatives, 4-amino- - pyrazolone etc.
The following examples are intended to illustrate the invention: Example 1: An exposed halosilver layer containing 10 g per kg of emulsion 1- (4'-phenoxy-3'-sulfophenyl) -3-heptadecyl-pyrazolone- (5) as a color coupler, is developed in a development: the following composition:
