Process for the continuous production of hydroperoxides
The oxidation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons has had considerable technical implications for some years
Gained importance. This reaction is particularly important in the context of Hock's phenol synthesis, in which isopropylbenzene is oxidized to the corresponding hydroperoxide. Resorcinol and acetone are produced in a similar manner, starting with m-diisopropylbenzene. In the case of oxidation, the procedure is generally such that the hydrocarbon in the liquid phase is at temperatures between approximately 50 and 1350C. is treated with oxygen or gases containing oxygen. Alkali is usually added to prevent the pH value from dropping too much by the acids that form.
Technically, the oxidation reaction is carried out in vessels with a volume of several m3. Into which the oxygen or the oxygen-containing gas is introduced from below. These vessels are mostly equipped with high-speed stirrers, which should ensure that the gas and liquid are sufficiently mixed. Although this type of oxidation has generally worked well in practice, there are also certain disadvantages. It can be z. B. not avoid that malfunctions occur on the stirrer or stuffing boxes, which result in undesirable operational interruptions. Damage to bearings on agitators has also led to local overheating and inflammation. In addition, every stirrer has the property of separating the light gas phase and heavy liquid again at the stirrer outlet, like a centrifuge.
It is necessary to keep the gas space above the liquid permanently under nitrogen or another inert gas in order to prevent the formation of explosive hydrocarbon-oxygen mixtures.
Proposals have also already been made for special types of reaction without the use of moving parts (stirrers). The German Auslegeschrift No. 1102154 proposes to carry out the peroxidation in elongated reactors divided into several chambers, the individual chambers being connected to one another through openings on the lower part of the chamber walls in such a way that the reaction material is guided through the individual chambers like a cascade. Without question, this ensures that there is an enriched peroxide concentration in the last chamber from which the reaction material is removed. In certain cases, such as
B. in the peroxidation of diisopropylbenzene to produce the dihydroperoxide of this compound, however, in the further course of the process it is more favorable or necessary to separate only part of the peroxides to be obtained from the oxidate obtained after the oxidation, so that a product with a relatively high peroxide content becomes the oxidizer is returned. In this case, the cascade mode of operation becomes uninteresting.
However, the cited interpretation does not pay the necessary attention to exhaust gas. In the oxidation of the hydrocarbons used according to the process, it is particularly important that non-explosive waste gas is produced, all the more so since explosive peroxides are present in not low concentrations. According to our own investigations, there is no longer any explosive exhaust gas if the exhaust gas has an oxygen content of less than 12%.
One will always endeavor to create a production unit in such a way that a maximum of performance is achieved when the required requirements are met. In the present case, this means: Whatever the type of oxidation reactor, it is always easy to determine which one

Amounts of air can be fed into the reactor in order to avoid explosive exhaust gas. The surprising findings that were made in this context are the subject of the invention.

The knowledge about the gas quantities to be used under the specific reaction conditions are essential for the process according to the invention. In-depth experiments on oxygen uptake as a function of the oxygen supply have surprisingly shown that there is no uniform relationship between the reaction rate and the oxygen supply. Rather, two areas can be clearly distinguished:
1. If the gas throughput is low, the rate of reaction is limited by the mass transfer.
The oxygen uptake is independent of the oxygen concentration of the blown gas; it increases almost proportionally with the amount of oxygen available.
2. If the oxygen supply is increased further, however, one comes to an area in which the chemical reaction itself obviously determines the rate of the oxidation. The liquid phase is physically saturated with the offered oxygen. The saturation value now only depends on the oxygen concentration and no longer on the amount of gas entered. The
The utilization of oxygen therefore decreases (under otherwise identical conditions) with increasing supply.
The invention draws procedural consequences from these observations. Since the same oxygen uptake can be obtained in the oxidation with air in a certain area as with the use of pure oxygen, it is made possible, under optimal reaction conditions, at the same time to fully maintain the safety aspects.
It can therefore be clearly seen that with the technical solution proposed here, in a number of basic points of the previously customary oxidation processes for alkylaromatic
Hydrocarbons deviates, considerable advantages can be achieved. As mentioned, it is above all clear that a level of security not guaranteed with the previous methods is achieved. It should be mentioned in this connection that the responsible German federal institute, for example, tested the hydroperoxides of m-diisopropylbenzene and declared them to be very explosive.
On the other hand, however, the process according to the invention also allows the reaction to be carried out gently, so that under otherwise specified reaction conditions, the lowest formation of byproducts (hydroxy and keto products) is achieved, since the hydroperoxides, which are not absolutely stable against the reaction conditions, remain in the reactor at maximum space-time yields is reduced to the shortest possible time.
The invention is described with reference to the drawing in an exemplary embodiment as follows.
The liquid to be oxidized is introduced into the reactor 1 at the bottom and slowly rises upwards in this, where it leaves the reactor through the nozzle 2. A partial flow of the oxidized liquid is fed through the pump 3 and the cooler 4 at the lowest possible temperature to the top of the gas washing and cooling column 6 filled with packing elements 5.
The air is finely distributed in the lower part of the reactor by a distribution system 7. It rises in the column of liquid. At the top of the column, cooling and washing are carried out in 6. The gas leaves the
Reactor through the pressure-maintaining valve 8. If necessary, nitrogen for dilution can also be added through the connection 9 (when starting up and shutting down). The heat of oxidation is dissipated through a cooling jacket 10 with water or air. The following examples are intended to explain the invention without, however, being restricted thereto.
Example 1: In a cylindrical oxidator with a cross section of 716 cm2, a hood with a 620 cm2 surface is mounted on the bottom. The hood surface is provided with about 30 holes with a diameter of 0.5 mm per cm2. The side plates of the hood are pulled down about 10 cm and held by struts with the side wall of the reactor without standing on the bottom of the reactor. The liquid introduced at the bottom of the reactor rises in the free space between the outer hood wall and the reactor. The air is blown into the hood space and enters the reaction space through the many holes in the hood, finely distributed.
In continuous operation, 15.4 Nm "/ h of air (= 215 Nm3 / m2 reactor cross-section / h) are blown into the hood space at the bottom of the reactor at a filling height of 9.9 m (height difference between the air inlet point and the liquid level). At the foot of the reactor 337 kg / h of organic product, which has a peroxide content of 63.6% (calculated as monohydroperoxide) and consists of 329.16 kg of highly monohydroperoxide-containing recycle product and 7.84 kg of freshly added diisopropylbenzene, is entered a reaction temperature of 85 ° C., a pH of 8 and a pressure of 3 atmospheres are maintained, changing the reaction temperature and the pH shifts the amount of byproducts formed.
The formation of by-products is practically independent of the oxidizing agent used (oxygen or air). Under fixed conditions, the formation of by-products becomes greater the lower the space-time yield, since the hydroperoxides dwell longer under reaction conditions against which they are not absolutely stable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
At the top of the reactor, 340 kg / h of oxidate is withdrawn, which has a peroxide content of 68% (calculated as
Monohydroperoxide). By extraction with 136 kg / h of 4% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, 9.53 kg / h of dihydroperoxide and 1.31 kg / h of hydroxyhydroperoxide are extracted, 329.16 kg / h of the above-mentioned recycle product, which is 7.44 kg / h of diisopropylbenzene is added and returned to the oxidation reactor.
The exhaust gas produced has a 0 content of 8%.
According to the results obtained, 13.44 g / h and 1 reaction space of dihydroperoxide and 1.85 g / h and 1 reaction space of hydroxyhydroperoxide are formed when an exhaust gas with 8% 02 is produced.
Example 2: If the filling level is kept at 3.7 m in the same apparatus as in Example 1, then under otherwise identical reaction conditions as in Example 11, only 3.82 Nm3 / h of air (= 55.6 Nm / m2 reaction cross-section / h) are blown in to obtain an exhaust gas with 80/002 content. At the bottom of the oxidation reactor, 84.25 kg / h of organic product with a peroxide content of 63.6% (calculated as monohydroperoxide) are introduced. This product consists of 82.29 kg / h of strongly monohydroperoxide-containing recycle product and 1.96 kg / h of fresh diisopropylbenzene. At the top of the reactor, 85 kg / h of oxidate are obtained with a peroxide content of 68% (calculated as monohydroperoxide).
By extraction with 34 kg / h of 4% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, 2.38 kg / h of dihydroperoxide and 0.33 kg / h of hydroxyhydroperoxide are obtained, with 82.29 kg / h of the above-mentioned highly monohydroperoxide-containing recycle product, which is 1, 96 kg / h of diisopropylbenzene added has a peroxide content of 63.6% (calculated as monohydroperoxide) and is fed to the reactor (as stated above).
Example 3: If the filling level is kept at 28.4 m in the same apparatus as in Example 1, then under the same reaction conditions as in Example 1, an exhaust gas of 8% O2 content is obtained when 40 Nm3 / h air (= 572 Nm / m reaction cross section / h) are blown in. At the bottom of the oxidation reactor, 880 kg / h of organic product with a peroxide content of 63.6% (calculated as monohydroperoxide) are introduced. This product consists of 859.5 kg / h of highly monohydroperoxide-containing recycle product and 20.5 kg / h of freshly added diisopropylbenzene. At the top of the reactor there are 887.8 kg / h of oxidate with a peroxide content of 68% (calculated as monohydroperoxide).
When this oxidate is extracted with 356 kg / h of 4% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, 24.9 kg / h of dihydroperoxide and 3.42 kg / h of hydroxyhydroperoxide are obtained, with 859.5 kg / h of the above-mentioned recycle product being obtained 20.5 kg / h of diisopropylbenzene added a peroxide content of 63.00 (calculated as monohydroperoxide) and fed to the reactor (as stated above).
When an exhaust gas containing 8% 0 is produced, 12.2 g / h and 1 reaction space of dihydroperoxide and 1.68 g / h and 1 reaction space of hydroxyhydroperoxide are produced.
