EMI1.1

EMI1.1
The present invention relates to a method for producing an elastic material from raw rubber of the Sapota Mimusops, which occurs in Brazil, Guiana and Venezuela, or the Sapota Chrysophyllum from Queensland and New South Wales or the Sapota Müelleri or mixtures thereof.
According to the invention, this product is obtained from the aforementioned raw rubbers by washing and heating in successive alkali salt baths and then cleaning, kneading and drying the mass obtained.
The product obtained is homogeneous, very tough and has properties
EMI1.2
According to one embodiment of the present method, the raw rubber is first cut or, better, finely ground, and the haste, sand or other foreign material is removed by washing in water. The cleaned raw rubber is then turned into a
EMI1.3
This bath is kept at the boiling point for about an hour until the raw rubber turns brown and threadbare. The potassium nitrate solution is then drawn off and the hollow rubber is placed in a bath consisting of a solution of five parts of sodium or potassium silicate, potassium or sodium borate or potassium or sodium tungstate in 100 parts of water, although the first-mentioned silicates are preferred. For preparation

the toughness and other properties of the product can be changed. The same also applies to the concentrations of the baths.
The second bath is kept boiling for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes and is then removed from the rubber. The rubber then has a red color and is slimy when hot, but becomes tough when cooled.
The gum is then transferred for about an hour into hot milk of lime, which consists of five parts of calcium oxide and 100 parts of water. This makes the rubber considerably tougher.
The next part of the process consists of washing the gum in flowing
EMI1.5
Calenders are rolled into thin slices. These thin slices are then dried in a warm atmosphere, with hot air currents being conducted over the thin slices. In some cases, the slices can be dipped in weak nitric, acetic or citric acid solution immediately after kneading before drying
