Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

The invention relates to a repair method for roads to restore the surface roughness of worn pavements with an excess of hydrocarbon-containing binders by sprinkling rock grains, subsequent heating of the surface and the rock grains and rolling the rock grains into the surface.

This involves repairing roads with a surface that is either completely or locally defective, and the like. between a deficiency in one of the two components of such surface coverings, namely a deficiency in granulate. In the last-mentioned case of repair, the existing surface covering is described as too "fat".

It happens that certain roads or parts of these roads, which conventionally consist of rock grains that have been compacted with a hydrocarbon binder, through the
Hydrocarbon binder reapplies become too greasy and take on their final state without obtaining sufficient surface roughness for safe traffic flow. this is the
This is the case with roads which have a "sand depth" below 0.40 mm, the "sand depth" being determined according to the method given below. The measurement method in question is known in France as
 EMI1.1
nik consists in covering the streets with a surface layer which is often referred to as a "wear layer".

These wear layers are obtained by applying a heated layer of a conventional carbonaceous binder to the road to be covered, onto which a predetermined amount of rock grains with corresponding properties such as very precise dimensions, hardness, purity, shape etc. is applied.

From US Pat. No. 2,254,463 it is also known to restore worn and too smooth or "fat" road surfaces by sprinkling rock grains onto the surface, after which, for example, the surface with the rock grains is heated with burners. The scattered layer is, however, very thick; H. the rock grains are superimposed several times at each point. For this reason, it is also recommended to stir and homogenize the road surface with a mixer before rolling.

Because of its poor thermal conductivity, the layer of rock grains acts as a heat insulator. H. either the road surface is not sufficiently heated or at least the upper rock grains are overheated, so that when these rock grains are stirred with the binder, local thermal decomposition of the binder occurs, which results in a reduction in the bond. The stirring up of the road surface leads to a profound change in the structure. The amount of work involved is the same as when producing a new surface layer. In addition, the energy consumption per unit area is very high and the method cannot be carried out in all weather conditions.

The rolled layer cannot be returned to traffic immediately.
 EMI1.2

The object is achieved according to the invention in that the surface is evenly coated with the rock grains, preferably in an amount of 6 to 12 l / m, and then heated until the temperature in a 1 mm depth of the binding agent is between 100 and 2000C, whereupon the rock grains are then immediately rolled into the hot binder to about 2/3 of their height.

The aggregate layers for the method according to the invention are formed from aggregates with dimensions between 6/10 and 16/18 mm, at least insofar as they are carried out in France according to the guidelines for the production of surface layers. The specified amount per square meter means that, in contrast to the state of the art, the rock grains form a non-closed individual layer through which the road surface is visible and accessible for heating.

The heating can be carried out by any known means such as, for example, a hot gas fan (warm air or infrared radiation). The heating is continued until the temperature of the binder at a depth of 1 mm below the surface of the binder reaches a value between 100 and 200 ° C, preferably between 150 and 180 ° C. It is essential here that the binder heated in the specified manner retains all of its required properties, such as, in particular, its good adhesion effect with respect to the rock grain, and that it is not thermally decomposed.

It is possible to carry out such repairs in all weathers and in all seasons and regardless of the condition of the surface to be covered. If the surface to be coated is damp, an advantage lies in the fact that a heating device is available on the construction site to dry the surface to be coated and, if necessary, preheat it.

This advantage is of considerable benefit to the groups of workers involved in the application of such surface coverings.

Example:

On one classified as dangerous because of its smoothness especially in rainy weather
Road, which had a "sand depth" of 0.4 mm, a layer of rock grains with dimensions between 10 and 14 mm in an amount of 6 to 8 l / m2 was spread. This grit layer and the road were then heated by means of a hot air blower until a temperature of around 160 C was reached at a depth of 1 mm.

Subsequently, solidification was carried out immediately with the aid of a smooth roller weighing 8 t, with the rock grains being pressed into the substrate up to 1/3 of their length. The road then had an average "sand depth" of 1.4 mm and could immediately be opened to traffic.

The method according to the example showed the advantages that no hydrocarbon binder was used. This is particularly economical with regard to the delivery and the use of a binder. At the same time, evaporation, which is generally the result of an involuntary overdose of the binding agent, was avoided. The road could be opened to traffic again immediately. The work could be started at any time of the year, including both on a damp road and especially in winter when the production of conventional surface layers was not possible.
