Abstract

A carbon-containing refractory material according to the invention comprises from 3 to 50 parts by weight of graphite and from 50 to 97 parts by weight of refractory aggregate. The refractory material additionally contains from 1 to 10 parts by weight of Al-Si alloy powder and preferably from 0.3 to 5 parts by weight of boron carbide per 100 parts by weight of graphite and refractory aggregate. Owing to its low melting point, the Al-Si alloy powder significantly increases the oxidation resistance of the resulting refractory material in the low temperature region (from about 400 degrees C upwards) in which the oxidation of carbon commences. As a result of this increased oxidation resistance, the corrosion resistance and the hot strength of the refractory material are increased. The corrosion resistance is further increased by the addition of boron carbide.
