Abstract
Description
AT 393 684 BAT 393 684 B
The invention relates to the production of new linear polymers of carbon monoxide, ethene and one or more other olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Polymers of carbon monoxide and ethene have been known for many years. They are usually prepared by reacting the monomers in the presence of a catalyst. High molecular weight 5 polymers of ethylene containing small amounts of carbon monoxide can be prepared using Ziegler catalysts. Low molecular weight polymers made of carbon monoxide with ethene and optionally further olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons, in which all monomer units occur according to a random distribution within the polymer, can be prepared with the aid of radical catalysts, such as peroxides. A special class of the polymers of carbon monoxide with ethene is formed from the linear 10 high molecular weight polymers, in which the monomer units are present in alternating order, so that these polymers therefore consist of units with the formula -CO- ^ H ^) -. Such polymers can be produced with, inter alia, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or cyano-containing compounds of palladium, cobalt or nickel as a catalyst.
The linear high molecular weight alternating polymers made of carbon monoxide with ethene have 15 excellent mechanical properties, in particular very high strength, rigidity and impact resistance. Despite the fact that they can be easily prepared from inexpensive starting materials, these polymers have not yet been put into practical use. This is mainly due to stability problems associated with the high melting point of these polymers, around 257 ° C. The processing of these polymers, for example by injection molding, should take place in the molten state, the material then being at a temperature of at least 25 ° C. above its melting point, i. H. at a temperature of over 280 ° C. It has been shown that at such high temperatures, these polymers begin to discolor and decompose. Furthermore, the processed polymers show a high degree of gelation.
Attempts have been made to lower the melting point by chemical reactions, triggered by the consideration that lowering the melting point of the polymers to enable processing at a lower temperature could possibly avoid the aforementioned problem. Examples of such chemical reactions are those in which some of the carbonyl groups present in the polymers are converted into furan, pyrrole, thio or thioketal groups. Although the above-mentioned methods in some cases cause the melting point of the polymer 30 to be lowered considerably and thereby lower the required processing temperature to an appropriate extent, the thermal stability of the polymers is often reduced to such an extent as a result of the chemical change that the aforementioned problem in occurs practically to the same extent, albeit now at a somewhat lower processing temperature.
From the foregoing it can be seen that no solution has yet been found to the problem presented, and that there is still an urgent need for a way to lower the melting point of the polymers without at the same time largely reducing the heat resistance.
In the references EP-Al-181014 and EP-A2-121965 processes for the production of polyketones by polymerizing a mixture of carbon monoxide and an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon in the presence of a ligand-containing group VIII metal catalyst are described; however, no melting point is given for 40 of the polyketones obtained, nor is there any indication of how the melting temperature could be lowered. US Pat. No. 3,835,123 describes a process for producing copolymers of carbon monoxide with one or more monoolefins by reacting carbon monoxide with the unsaturated compounds mentioned in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of HPd (CN) 3. A single melting point is given in this reference (Example III ethene / carbon monoxide copolymer with a melting point of about 260 ° C. There is also no indication here of how the melting temperature could be reduced.
Die Untersuchung ergab, daß das Ausmaß der 60 Schmelzpunktemiedrigung unter anderem vom Wert des Quotienten m/n abhängt, worin m die durchschnittlicheIt has now been found that the melting point of the abovementioned polymers of ethene and carbon monoxide can be reduced to a value between 150 and 245 ° C. without seriously impairing the thermal stability by adding a relatively small amount of one or more further to the monomer mixture to be polymerized olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons with less than 20 carbon atoms (A) is added. If a catalyst is used which enables the production of a linear alternating high molecular weight polymer consisting of units with the formula -00- (02 ^) - from a mixture of carbon monoxide and ethene, then if a polymerizable mixture, the additional the monomer (A) is used, a polymer is formed, 55 which contains units with the formula -CO- ^ H ^) - and units of the formula -CO- (A) - in a statistical distribution over the polymer backbone. The structure of the copolymers and that of the terpolymer differ only in that, in the case of the terpolymer, the -CO- (A) units are present in the polymer chain according to statistical distribution. The surprising result of this structural change is that the melting point is reduced without seriously impairing the thermal stability. The investigation showed that the extent of the 60 melting point decrease depends, among other things, on the value of the quotient m / n, where m is the average

Formula -CO- ^ H ^) - mean in the polymer. For polymers of carbon monoxide with ethene and with another olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon, this dependency means that if n changes, m must change proportionally to achieve the same melting point decrease, and that if n remains constant, a greater or lesser melting point decrease will occur when m increases or decreases. The investigation also showed that the extent of the melting point decrease also depends on the molecular weight of the further monomer (A).
Schließlich hängt das Ausmaß der Schmelzpunktsemiedrigung von der Struktur des weiteren Monomers (A) ab.Finally, the extent of the melting point decrease depends on the structure of the further monomer (A).

Polymere, welche den Kriterien a) - d) genügen, sind neue Substanzen.Polymers that meet criteria a) - d) are new substances.
The present invention therefore relates to the production of new polymers of carbon monoxide with ethene and with one or more further olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons (A) with less than 20 carbon atoms, which polymers meet the criteria given under a) to d) above.
The polymers according to the invention have a melting point between 150 and 245 ° C. Preferred polymers have a melting point between 170 and 240 ° C and in particular between 195 and 235 ° C. As already stated above, the extent of the melting point decrease depends, among other things, on the value of the quotient m / n. For example, for polymers according to the invention, which have been prepared by polymerizing carbon monoxide with ethene and with propene and which comprises on average n units with the formula -CO- ^ H ^) - and on average m units with the formula -CO -fC ^ Hg) - exist, a melting point of 245 ° C a quotient m / n of about 0.023, whereas a melting point of 150 ° C corresponds to a quotient m / n of about 0.33. As also mentioned above, the extent of the melting point decrease also depends on the molecular weight of the monomer (A). For example, for a polymer according to the invention, which is produced by polymerizing carbon monoxide with ethene and with butene-1 and which consists of an average of n units with the formula -CO- ^ H ^) - and an average of m units with the formula -CO-fC ^ Hg) - there is a melting point of 244 ° C with a quotient m / n of about 0.007, whereas for a polymer of carbon monoxide with ethene and with propene a melting point of 244 ° C with a quotient m / n of about 0.026 corresponds. Furthermore, for a polymer according to the invention, which is produced by polymerizing carbon monoxide with ethene and with octene-1 and which consists of on average n units with the formula -CO- ^ H ^) - and of on average m units of the formula -CO- (CgHjg) -, a melting point of 225 ° C with a quotient m / n of about 0.057, whereas for a polymer made of carbon monoxide with ethene and with propene, a melting point of 225 ° C with a quotient m / n of about Corresponds to 0.068.
Wenn TQ die Ausflußzeit von m-Cresol bedeutet und Tp die Ausflußzeit derIn general, the higher the molecular weight of the polymers according to the invention, the higher their intrinsic viscosity will be. To determine the intrinsic viscosity of a polymer according to the invention, four solutions are first prepared by dissolving the polymer in four different concentrations in m-cresol at 100 ° C. For each of these solutions, the viscosity is measured in a viscometer at 100 ° C, based on m-cresol at 100 ° C. If TQ is the outflow time of m-cresol and Tp is the outflow time of
From the relative viscosity ηΓ ^ the inherent viscosity (η ^) can be calculated according to the formula: = (ln T | rej) / c, where c is the concentration of the polymer in grams per 100 ml of solution. The intrinsic viscosity (η) in dl / g is found by graphically plotting the Tlinjj values for each of the four polymer solutions against the corresponding concentration (c) and then extrapolating to c = 0. Instead of the expression " intrinsic viscosity " the term "Limiting Viscosity Number" (LVN) recommended by the INTERNATIONAL UNION OF PURE AND APPLIED CHEMISTRY will be used in this specification. The polymers according to the invention generally have an LVN of 0.2 to 5.0 dl / g. Preferred polymers have an LVN of 03 to 4.5 dl / g and in particular an LVN of 0.4 to 4.0 dl / g.
