 EMI1.1

The surprising observation was made that the reduction products (leuco derivatives) of oxyanthraquinones, which are characterized in that their keto groups are wholly or partially reduced, are in a very excellent manner on the chromium
 EMI1.2

This was by no means to be expected, for these leuco products are generally much less colored than the corresponding oxyanthraquinone. Attempts to use the leucooxyanthraquinones for dyeing have so far only had negative results, apparently because the correct stain was not used. So has z. B. Rumer (Ber. XIV, p. 1263, para. 2) reported that deoxyalizarin stains only weakly on clay and iron stains. Liebermann also noted (Ber.

XXI, 441, para. 1, below). that the reduction products of flavopurpurin with stains only give colorations that are not soapy.

Apparently at that time he did not make experiments with chrome stains, which, as has now been found, provide excellent, soap-resistant colors, contrary to the information provided by the researcher mentioned. Chrome stains were also less common in those days.

The property of staining chromium stains so intensely is not limited, as has been found, to certain stages of reduction, but is inherent in all leuco products that are more or less strongly reduced, both those of the coloring agents and of the non-coloring oxyanthraquinones.

   Example 4.

   For 100 cotton.

The dye bath is charged with 10 kg of 20% strength deoxyflavopurpurin paste. You go cold with the chrome-stained yarn, drive slowly to about 800 and hold at this temperature for some time. The yarn is then dried, steamed, soaped and dried again. The result is a very strong brown that is extremely fast to soap.

    Example b.

   Cotton print.

7 # 5 kg of 20% deoxyflavopurpurin paste and 7 # 5 l of acetic acid chromium from 200 Bé are brought to 100 kg with St1trketraganth thickening. With this printing paste will
