Durch weiteres Rober. der Elektroden, bis schliesslich die Glasplatte den Wasser- spiegel berührt, wird die Wasserschicht, welche für den Strom ausgleich noch zur Verfügung steht, immer dünner, so dass der Reststrom ohne Feuererscheinungen und ohne Unstetigkeit bis auf Null verringert werden kann.
Die Kühlung der Elektroden erfolgt durch ein Wasserrohr e, das auf seinem ganzen Umfang und bis zum Wasserspiegel hinauf eine grössere Zahl von radialen Bohrungen aufweist. Im Bottich entsteht dadurch eine radiale Wasserströmung, die bei jeder Taucb- tiefe über die ebene Glasplatte hinwegstreicht und die Elektroden gleichmässig kühlt, ohne dass an irgend einer Stelle heisses Wasser stehen bleiben kann, was von grösster Wichtigkeit ist.
Damit die grösste Leistungsaufnahme in bequemer Weise geregelt werden kann, ist es üblich, die horizontale Entfernung der Elektroden verstellbar einzurichten. Um dies zu ermöglichen, ist in Fig. 4 eine weitere Ausführungsform dargestellt, bei welcher die Glasplatte zwischen den Elektroden geteilt ausgeführt ist. Diese Teilung übt auf die Wirkungsweise des Flussigkeitswiderstandes keinen Einfluss aus, indem bei einer Verschiebung der Elektroden die daran befestigten Glasscheiben mitwandern.
