24 parts by weight of finely powdered calcium hydride and 91 parts by weight of finely powdered calcium carbide are intimately mixed. In this mixture, 25% of the calcium required to reduce the total sulfuric acid comes from the hydride and 75% from the carbide. The mixture is ignited in a crucible made of refractory material in the manner customary in aluminothermics by an ignition mixture, whereupon the reduction takes place automatically through the whole mass in a short time.
It is advisable to warm up the crucible a little and to protect it from heat radiation by embedding it in sand or the like, because otherwise a layer easily forms on the edge which does not react as a result of cooling. After cooling, the mass is powdered, exhaustively extracted with sulfuric acid-free hydrochloric acid and the

After being pressed into a crucible made of refractory material, it is ignited by an ignition means. The further treatment of the reduced mass takes place as in Examples 2 and 3.
