Process for improving the properties of river iron or steel.
The present invention relates to a method for improving the properties of mild iron or steel by adding copper, chromium and boron. The invention consists in adding 2% titanium to the liquid metal, advantageously as ferro-titanium or 0-2, in addition to the elements mentioned or their ferroalloys % Arsenic or both substances in the specified quantities are added at the same time.
Although the additives themselves would have a damaging effect on the iron, the amounts by weight are kept in such a way that, taking into account the known additives, they are in such a mixing ratio that the metal is given properties that can otherwise only be achieved by subsequent treatment. The metal is improved in toughness and strength, it becomes fine-grained, and harmful substances such as sulfur, phosphorus, etc. are removed.
The addition of arsenic is very small, and although it makes the iron very brittle under normal circumstances, this disadvantage is offset by the large amount of copper added; the result is not only a very hard, but also a very tough metal.
For example, the mixture to be added can be composed as follows: Ferrotitanium 2%,
Metallic copper 1 # 5%,
Chromium 0 # 5%, boron 0-2%,
Arsenic 0 # 2%.
When river iron is to be treated. so a certain amount of the above mixture is poured into the ladle and the molten metal poured on it.
The ladle is then left to rest for 3 or 4 minutes to allow the additives to take effect. In the case of cast steel, the molten steel is held at rest for 5 to 10 minutes before pouring.
River iron treated in this way is harder, extremely fine-grained and has a higher grade

purposes usual.
The proportions can be changed within certain limits according to the metals being treated; substances other than those listed in the above example can also be used, e.g. B. Copper compounds of titanium, chromium sesquioxide, ferrochrome or copper compounds of chromium.
The mixture can also contain ferrous manganese and ferrosilixium and
