Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the production of a mixed gas consisting of hydrogen and carbon oxide with simultaneous extraction of soot.

If you divert heavy hydrocarbon vapors from crude petroleum.

Commercial petroleum. Tar oils or the like, mixed with oxygen or steam or both. at a temperature of 1200 to 13500 C through a relatively narrow and long pipe, taking care of the constant supply of the specified amount of heat to the pipe contents by supplying 18 calories per 16 g of vapors and regulating the supplied vapors or by dimensioning the pipe length accordingly is carried, the vapors decompose into hydrogen and carbon oxide with the separation of carbon in the form of soot.

It has now been found that the specified method is not restricted to the use of liquid hydrocarbons, but rather also gaseous hydrocarbons, such as those found in nature, eg. B. in the abundant gas sources
 EMI1.1
 can use.

The hydrocarbons, which are gaseous per se at ordinary temperature, exist. regardless of their origin. from hydrocarbons of low molecular weight, while the hydrocarbon vapors obtained from petroleum, etc. are composed of hydrocarbons of high molecular weight.

It was by no means immediately foreseeable or obvious to use simply constructed, gaseous hydrocarbons of low molecular weight instead of the hydrocarbon vapors of high molecular weight and complex chemical structure to be broken down in the above-mentioned process for the production of a mixed gas consisting of hydrogen and carbon oxide. In general, chemical compounds are easier to decompose with increasing molecular weight and it had to be assumed from the outset that the vapors of petroleum and the like. The like. Can be broken down more quickly and easily than methane, ethane, etc., in that the reaction, once started, for whatever reasons, e.g. B. due to catalytic influences, progresses more easily and favors decomposition.

The present proceedings operate under the same conditions as the
 EMI1.2
materials that contain some carbonic acid, cleaning can be carried out using agents suitable for absorption.
