Method of reducing the inflammability of celluloid.

Celluloid is very flammable because of its high flammability and many attempts have already been made to reduce its flammability.

The invention relates to a method for reducing the inflammability of the celluloid by coating the celluloid on the surface with gelatin. This forms a protective layer on the celluloid that reduces the risk of fire, because the celluloid can only burn when the gelatin layer has melted away. Due to its thinness, transparency and flexibility, the gelatin layer does not change the appearance of the celluloid and of the objects made from it.

The layer can be applied by dipping into liquid gelatin, spraying, brushing and the like. Like. And by subsequent drying. The use of one of the numerous possibilities for coating celluloid with gelatin depends primarily on the shape of the celluloid object. The permanent connection between celluloid and gelatine is created by acetic acid, glue solution and the like. Like. More given, which are previously applied to the celluloid article.

Depending on the shape of the object, the gelatin layer can be connected even more closely to the celluloid by subsequent pressing. If appropriate, the hardening of the gelatin layer can be brought about by formaldehyde (formalin), alum and other means, namely in gaseous form after the gelatin layer has been applied or by addition during processing of the gelatin.

There are numerous ways to get the gelatin onto the celluloid and attach it.

The method can be applied to all flammable and highly inflammable celluloid compounds.
