Device for the electrical heating of liquids.
In the case of a concentric arrangement of two metal cylinders as electrodes in an electrically heated steam boiler or hot water generator, analogous to a concentric cable, the streamline diagram shown in broken lines in FIG. 1 results. The stream filaments run radially from the inner to the outer cylinder. The maximum current density and thus the maximum voltage gradient is on the inner cylinder. The hyperbolic curve of the volt-per-em in FIG. 1 shows the change in the voltage gradient with increasing distance from the inner cylinder. The values apply to a radius of the inner cylinder: fi = 1 cm, for

it can be seen that with a concentric arrangement the material used for the power line (the dielectric in the cable, but the water in the electrically heated steam boiler) is uneconomically used.
Knowledge of the volt-per-cm curve is sufficient for a cable that does not involve currents that are to be evaluated in terms of energy efficiency. In the case of steam boilers, however, real currents occur, so that above all the curve of the power distribution must be determined. As is known, in the case of an electrically heated steam boiler with a concentric electrode arrangement, exceeding the limit for the permissible current density is manifested by the fact that the load on the inner cylinder is so high that the liquid layer surrounding the inner electrode is momentarily evaporated. The electrically heated steam boiler has become an interrupter with conditions similar to those of a Wehnelt and Simon interrupter.
If a denotes the resistance of 1 cm3 of water, the power that is converted into heat in this cubic centimeter is:
EMI1.2
The watt-per-cm3 curve in FIG. 1 shows these values for o = 1000 ohms. The ratio of the power in watt-per-cm3 on the inner cylinder to the power on the outer cylinder is equal to 25: 1, i.e. i. thus equal to the square of the radius ratio.
The formation of vapor bubbles makes the power distribution even more unfavorable. The same naturally occur on the inner cylinder due to the higher wattage per 1 cm3 in much larger quantities and cause an increased current density and thus an increased voltage and power gradient by reducing the cross section. For all of these reasons, the operating voltage cannot be driven too high with a concentric electrode arrangement.
The present invention seeks to compensate for the disadvantages of the concentric electrode arrangement. For this purpose, the effective surface of the outer cylinder is made equal to or approximately equal to that of the inner cylinder, so that the same current densities occur at both electrodes. In practice, this can be achieved by covering corresponding surface parts of the external electrode with insulation material. Fig. 2 shows an embodiment; a is the inner electrode, b1, b2, b3, b4 are the surface parts of the outer cylinder that are available for the current conduction,
