  Suspension for submarine cable sleeves.

The manufacture of submarine cables with lead sheath is rarely possible in one piece, as the length of the sea parts to be traversed requires a cable length that is
 EMI1.1
so-called sleeves are connected to one another. These are housings that contain the soldered connections for the copper conductors of the two cable ends. With pupin cables, in addition to these connection

the tensile force exerted by the cable is large. 1b relates to shallower water depths at which, with a lower cable weight and therefore a relatively greater sleeve weight, there is severe stress on the inner face of the sleeve. occurs.

Special laying machines are used to lay out the cables. The most important part thereof consists, as FIG. 2 shows, of a drum B, which acts as a brake for the cable running off, and has a diameter of generally about 2.5 inches, around which the cable is wound. Here, too, both types of sleeve form an obstacle because of their rigidity; the cable would have to be removed from the drum for each sleeve and put back on after passing the sleeve.

According to the invention, these inconveniences are eliminated in that the connection between the two end faces of the sleeves with the cable ends is made elastic. As FIGS. 3a and 3b show, this avoids the most unfavorable stress on the cable when it is launched via the guide roller A in the two cases shown in FIGS. La and 1b. Even when running over the laying machine, the cable ends adjoining the sleeve form an elastic transition, so that damage to the lead jacket or the cable (buckling) is avoided (Fig. 4).

forms. The upholstery ends of the sleeves are wrapped with wire, iron tape or the like. As a pad g z. B. rubber or a body with similar properties can be used.

A conical spiral spring e can also be used for the wrapping, as is already known for telephone plugs (FIG. 6). One end of the spring is connected to the socket housing l '

filled with rubber or a similar compound. Since the stress on the cable and its lead sheath is greatest directly on the end face of the sleeve, but decreases as the distance from this point increases, it is advisable to take this changing stress into account by appropriately designing the elastic suspension. This can be done for example

as shown in FIG. 8, for example.

The cable e is surrounded by three springs e "e, and e", which are fixed on the end face of the sleeve and are of different lengths.

Such a connection of the cable ends with the sleeves represents an elastic body,
