Abstract

1. Power-operated tongs for transporting steel ingots, billets, slabs or the like, with a tongs housing (12) and two two-armed tongs legs (19, 20, 44, 45) each pivotable about an axis (17, 18, 48, 49), between the upper arms of which a power unit (29, 30, 31, 32) is arranged, for closing and opening the tongs, by means of which a power storage device (25, 26, 52, 53) is actuated during seizure of the workpiece, which storage device maintains the pressure of the tongs legs during transport of the workpiece, characterized in that for power storage each tongs leg (19, 20, 44, 45) is mounted upon a rocker arm (21, 22, 46, 47) held by a double-acting power storage device (25, 26, 52, 53) carried on the tongs housing (12) and having its pivot axis (23, 24, 50, 51) located on the tongs housing (12) displaced in the horizontal and vertical directions with respect to the axis (17, 18, 48, 49) of the associated tongs leg.
