Abstract

1. A protective helmet, more particularly for drivers of land vehicles, of the kind comprising : a rigid shell (11) adapted to envelop, with the interposition of appropriate padding, basically the top, rear and side parts of the wearer's head, leaving an opening for seeing through, the shell being substantially stationary relatively to the head when the helmet is in position ; and a bottom front rigid part (12) which is adapted to move forwards relatively to the shell (11) and to be secured thereto by appropriate pivoting and/or locking means (12a, 16, 16', 17, 17a), the bottom front movable part (12) having a bead (19) which, when the part (12) is secured to the shell (11) bears below and around the wearer's chin, characterised in that the shell padding is prolonged rearwardly and downwardly by a padding (20) adapted to fit around the back or the neck and to bear thereon near the wearer's suboccipital fossae (27) ; and when the bottom moving front part (12) is secured to the shell (11) the bead (17) also bears on the wearer's mandibule on both sides so that the padding (20) and bead (19) together bound an opening which extends around the wearer's neck and is considerably narrower than the internal space of the shell.
