1, Interscience Publishers, New York, 1964, pp. 799 et suivantes.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI3.1
 où R est le radical :

 et où X représente de l'hydrogène ou un halogène (sauf le fluor) ; a et b sont des nombres entiers égaux indé- pendamment à 1 ou 2 ; n présente des valeurs allant de 1 a 5, avec pour condition qu'au moins 10% du poids du mélange sont constitués des dérivés de carbona- tes d'allyle oligomères   (g > 1)   ;

     - (B) de 80 à 20% en poids d'un monomère liquide copolymérisable avec le composant (A) choisi parmi l'isophtalate de diallyle, le téréphtalate de diallyle, le cyanurate de triallyle et l'isocyanurate de triallyle ; et - (C) de 0,3 à 1 partie en poids pour 100 parties

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   Dans la forme de mise en oeuvre préférée, la composition de la présente invention contient de 35 à 65% en poids d'un composant (A) selon la formule (I), où X est du brome,   a   et b sont égaux à 1 et la teneur en oligomères   (nl)   varie entre 15 et 50% en poids ;
 EMI4.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 EMI7.1
 Indicederéfraction(n,), mesuré avec un d réfractomètre Abbe (ASTM D-542) ;
Obscurcissement (%) et transmittance de la lumière visible mesurées avec Hazegard XL-211 de Gardner (ASTM D-1003) ;

  POLYMERIZABLE LIQUID COMPOSITION IN ORGANIC GLASS WITH LOW COLOR AND HIGH REFRACTION INDEX
The present invention relates to a liquid polymerizable glass composition, organic with low coloration and with a high refractive index. The invention also relates to organic glasses obtained from said polymerizable composition.

   In the field of organic glasses, interesting products are those resulting from the polymerization of bis (allyl carbonates) of diethylene glycol, and this because of their optical and mechanical characteristics which make them useful for the preparation of objects optics (F. Strain, "Encyclopedia of Chemical Processing and Design", vol. 1, Interscience Publishers, New York, 1964, pp. 799 et seq.

   In the preparation of optical objects with these polymerized products, however, relatively greater thicknesses are needed than those of inorganic glass objects, and this because of the relatively low values of the refractive index specific to these polymeric products themselves. This is disadvantageous from the point of view of the weight of the manufactured object, the impairment of the aesthetic characteristics and the difficulty of obtaining objects of high optical quality with high thickness.

   This is why, in order to resolve these difficulties, technical compositions capable of forming polymeric products endowed with indices of development have been developed.

 relatively high refraction. In the field of allyl carbonate derivatives, these compounds, specific to the technique already known, generally comprise polymerizable monomers having an aromatic part such as bis (allyl carbonates) of bisphenols and the corresponding ethoxylated derivatives which can also be used. in halogenated and more especially brominated form. This already known technique was the subject of patent U. S. 4,622. 376; CA 105 7576n (Japanese patent application 60-231,712); CA 105 7577p (Japanese patent application 60-231.7134) and CA 105 80818h (Japanese patent application 61-23.567).

   In Italian patent application no. 21.440 A / 89, filed on August 3, 1989 in the name of the applicant for this patent, a polymerizable liquid composition containing a polyfunctional allylic liquid monomer and a mixture of bis monomers and oligomers is described. allyl carbonate) of bisphenol. Halogen and oxyethylated. This composition can be transformed by polymerization into organic glasses with refractive index

 9 th high, with good impact resistance and good machinability.

   It has now been found that it is possible to improve the color of the organic glasses which can be obtained from the composition according to the aforementioned Italian patent application, even when the said composition contains bis (allyl carbonates) in their non-form. halogenated, provided that small amounts of cyclopentene or its alkyl derivative are included in the composition itself. It has also been found that this improvement in color is remarkably good and could not be obtained using other monomers conforming to the technique already known, for example, the cyclohexene compounds described in European patent application 224,123 or d 'other

 similar monomers.

   Consequently, the present invention relates to a liquid composition polymerizable in organic glasses with low coloring and with a high refractive index which comprises: (A) from 20 to 80% by weight of a mixture of monomer and oligomers of a allyl carbonate derivative which can be represented by formula (I):

 where R is the radical:

 and where X represents hydrogen or halogen (except fluorine); a and b are whole numbers independently of 1 or 2; n has values ranging from 1 to 5, with the condition that at least 10% of the weight of the mixture consist of derivatives of allyl carbonates oligomers (g> 1);

     - (B) from 80 to 20% by weight of a liquid monomer copolymerizable with the component (A) chosen from diallyl isophthalate, diallyl terephthalate, triallyl cyanurate and triallyl isocyanurate; and - (C) from 0.3 to 1 part by weight per 100 parts

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 by weight of the sum of components (A) and (B) of cyclopentene or alkylcyclopentene, where the linear or branched alkyl group contains from 1 to 10 carbon atoms.

   In the preferred embodiment, the composition of the present invention contains from 35 to 65% by weight of a component (A) according to formula (I), where X is bromine, a and b are equal to 1 and the oligomer content (nl) varies between 15 and 50% by weight;
 EMI4.1
 from 65 to 35% by weight of component (B); and from 0.3 to 1 part by weight per 100 parts by weight of the sum of components (A) and (B) of a component (C) chosen from cyclopentene and methylcyclopentene.

   Component (A) of the composition of the present invention can advantageously be obtained by a trans-esterification reaction between the corresponding diol and diallyl carbonate in the presence of a basic catalyst, operating for example according to the general principles of the process trans-esterification described in European Patent No. 35,304. If one operates under these conditions, one obtains a mixture of the derivatives of allyl carbonates monomers (n = 1) and oligomers (n> 1) according to formula (I), with a proportion between them which varies according to the ratio between reagents.

  More particularly, component (A), which is useful for the composition of the present invention, can be obtained by transesterification of the diallyl carbonate and of the diol T, preferably 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyethoxy-3,5dibromophenyl ) propane ? with a molar ratio between them of less than about 20/1 and preferably in the range of 12/1 to 4/1.

   In yet another preferred form of the present invention, the composition contains from 0.5 to 0.2 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the sum of the components (A) and (B) of an ultraviolet light absorbing agent (UV-absorb) chosen from the class of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 hydroxybenzophenones, and from 0.05 to 0.3 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the sum of the components (A) and (B) of an amine chosen from aliphatic amines and hindered amines (HALS).

   As examples of hydroxybenzophenones suitable for this purpose, mention may be made of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, 2-hydroxy-4-noctyloxybenzophenone, 2-hydroxy-4-isooctyloxybenzophenone, 2-hydroxy -4-dodecyloxybenzophenone, 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, 2,2 ', 4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-sulfobenzophenone As examples of suitable commercially available hydroxybenzophenones to this end, mention may be made of those sold under the following brands: Chimassorb 90, Advastab 48, Chimassorb 81, Chimassorb IL5, Uvinul DSO and Uvinul 400.

   Examples of aliphatic amines and sterically hindered amines suitable for this purpose include triethylamine, N, N-dimethylethanolamine and derivatives of tetraalkylpiperidine and especially tetramethylpiperidine. Examples of commercial products suitable for this purpose include those sold under the following brands: Tinuvin 770, Tinuvin 662, Spinuvex A36, Chimassorb 944, Hostavin N-20, Goodrite 3034 and Cyasorb UV 3346.

   The addition of hydroxybenzophenones and aliphatic or sterically hindered amines to the compositions of the present invention makes it possible to appreciably increase the resistance to aging, and this without harming the initial coloration of the polymer and without reducing its hardness.

   The composition of the present invention further contains a polymerization initiator in an amount ranging from 2 to 8 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the sum of components (A) and (B). An initiator of this kind is soluble in the composition itself

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 and is capable of producing free radicals in a temperature range from about 30 to about 100 C.

  As nonlimiting examples of these initiators, mention may be made of organic peroxide and percarbonate initiators and, more particularly, diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate, di-sec-butyl peroxydicarbonate, dibenzoyl peroxide and tertiary perbenzoate. -butyle. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the polymerization initiator is present in the composition in a content ranging from 3 to 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the sum of components (A) and (B) .

   The liquid polymerizable composition of the present invention may additionally contain one or more conventional additives such as mold release agents, dyes, pigments, infrared light absorbents and the like, in total quantities not exceeding 1 part, however. weight per 100 parts by weight of the sum of components (A) and (B).

   The liquid polymerizable composition of the present invention can be transformed into optical objects by the mold polymerization process (casting). The polymerization is initiated by the free radicals produced by the decomposition of the polymerization initiators added to the composition itself, generally operating at a temperature ranging from 35 to 100 C. Under these conditions, the times necessary for the complete polymerization are included in the range of 2 to 100 hours. The objects thus obtained have a high refractive index, an extremely low coloring and good resistance to aging, as clearly shown by the experimental examples described below, which aim to complete the description of the present invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   In these examples, the polymerizable liquid compositions were prepared by adding dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate as polymerization initiator and the compositions obtained were subjected to polymerization in glass molds assembled with a flexible coating of plasticized polyvinyl chloride which determines the thickness. of the manufactured polymer object.

  The polymerization is carried out in a forced circulation oven, with a polymerization cycle of 20 hours duration and a temperature which increases from 40 to 80 C.

   The following characteristics were determined on hardened samples:
 EMI7.1
 Refraction indicator (n,), measured with an Abbe refractometer (ASTM D-542);
Obscuration (%) and transmittance of visible light measured with Gardner Hazegard XL-211 (ASTM D-1003);
Yellowness index (YI) defined as: YI = (100 / Y) (1, 277X-1; 06Z), measured with the Gardner XL-805 colorimeter (ASTM D-1925);

Resistance to aging evaluated by continuous exposure in a Weather 0 Meter (WOM) fitted with a 6500 W xenon lamp; the results are expressed in the form of an increase in the yellow index (Delta YI) determined after 150 hours of exposure to 62 C on the black panel and with a relative humidity equal to 50%.

   On the other hand, the following components (A) were used in the examples below for the liquid compositions: - (A1), product of the trans-esterification of diallyl carbonate and of 2,2-bis (4- hydroxyethoxy-

     - (A2), product of the transesterification of diallyl carbonate and of 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyethoxy-3, 5-dibromophenyl) propane, with a molar ratio between them equal to 8/1, which corresponds in formula (I) with X = bromine; a = b = 1, n = 1, 15 (average value); oligomer content (n> 1) = 25% by weight; and - (A3), products of the transesterification of diallyl carbonate and of 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyethoxy-3, 5-dibromophenyl) propane, with a molar ratio between them equal to 4/1, which corresponds to formula (I) with X = bromine; a = b him = 1.35 (mean value); oligomer content (Il 1) 45% by weight.
