<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
La figure 4 montre l'orientation des différents faisceaux lumineux dans le cas où le phare-croisement A est disposé à l'arrière de la carrosserie et encastré dans l'angle gauche de la dite carrosserie. Ses faisceaux lumineux sont alors les suivants : a) Le grand faisceau, latéral arrière B, émis par la fenêtre 6 (,figure 1) et qui éclaire franchement le côté libre de la route, faisceau dirigé en contae-sens de la marche avant de{L'automobile;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
phare avant côté libre - en veilleuse ;

Headlamp for illumination of the free side and the rear of the road, making it easier to pass vehicles at night
The present invention relates to an electric headlight, acetylene or the like, with a reflector oriented in the opposite direction to the forward direction of the car, the headlight being fixed to the side or the rear of the latter for the purpose of '' illuminate the free side and the rear of the road and thus facilitate night-time passing of automobiles with their headlights off or on standby.
In application of the regulations in force (French Highway Code, for example), the permitted and applied extinction of the front headlight on the free side, already facilitates, at night, the crossing of two vehicles, but this extinction is insufficient, because the 'blindness persists, and the part of the road next to and to the rear of the crossed car is in complete darkness,
The rear headlight, object of the present invention aims to obviate the drawbacks that have just been pointed out.
The invention essentially comprises an electric headlight, acetylene or other, in sheet metal, copper or any other material, pos-

attractive by its very shape, an angle of projection of the light illuminating the road on the side and at the rear of the car to facilitate the passage of the one which is going to cross. This headlight, placed on the side or at the rear of the vehicle, is fitted with a visor which folds the light beam down to a height of one meter and leaves all visibility for the number plate and the existing rear red light.
The non-glare of this headlight is due to the lateral oval shape, to its metallic partitioning or, failing that, to the red or yellow glazed window.
Whatever light source is used, the rear red light and the white light for the illumination of the number can be combined with the dipped headlight, they nevertheless retain their independence and are controlled in the usual way.
For any light source other than electricity, the rear lantern, always on, will include in its device, the red light and the number lighting.
The dipped headlight must be fixed on the side which remains free in a crossing (left side in case the vehicles take their right), or at the rear of the body using this oven. the running board, the front or rear mudguards and in a less visible and more rational way, by fitting it into the left corner (or right depending on the direction of travel) of the said bodywork *, The rear light can no longer be controlled by the devices already applied, that is to say electrically, eg switching off the headlight on the front free side and simultaneous switching on of the rear headlight ,,
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of illustration, one embodiment of the invention. In this drawing, it has been assumed that the direction of movement of the cars was to the right,
the crossing being on the right and the overtaking on the left.
Fig.l is a horizontal section of the apparatus according to a-a of Figure 2;

The apparatus shown comprises electric lighting and preferably has, in the direction of the width of the car, an oval shape. The rear red light and the white light for the number plate illumination are included in the present rear light.
In FIG. 1, at 1 and 2, there is shown the rear left angle of the bodywork with recessing of the headlight-dipped beam oriented in the opposite direction to the forward travel of the car. In the event that the headlight is not fitted, a side window on the free side of the road can be placed on wall 4; its aim will be to light up the part of the free road at the junction and as far as possible from this point.
The light source consists of an electric bulb 3 or "low beam * controlled electrically, and according to the maneuver indicated below; the wall 4 forms the reflector of the low beam * At 5 is arranged similarly, a metal partition forming reflector of the light rays reflected on the window 6 and avoiding the dazzling of the lamp 3; this partition 5 also separates the headlight into two parts, one of which, the one on the right, contains a small additional bulb 7 which is constantly on and used for two uses:
red rear light and white light for number plate lighting Thanks to this partitioning, the constant lighting of the part of the headlight intended for night crossings is avoided.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Window 6, mounted on hinges, clearly illuminates the free side of the road and the part located behind the car and indicates the overall dimensions of the bodywork.
The side window 8 illuminates the number plate and the window 9 serves as a rear red light.
At 10, there is a bar forming a door hinge, connecting the upper and lower parts and serving for fixing the red glass 9.
In FIG. 2, at 11, the border serving for fixing the panes can be seen, and at 10, the bar forming the hinge.
In FIG. 3, showing the right lateral face of the device, on the side of the number plate, we see at 8, the removable side window for changing the lamp 7, window illuminating the number plate, According to the location of this plate it can be placed at the top or at the bottom of the headlight.
FIG. 4 shows the orientation of the different light beams in the case where the dipped headlight A is arranged at the rear of the body and embedded in the left corner of said body. Its light beams are then as follows: a) The large beam, rear side B, emitted by window 6 (, figure 1) and which clearly illuminates the free side of the road, beam directed in the opposite direction of forward travel. {The automobile;
b) The regulatory red rear light C, emitted by window 9 (figure l), c) The small white light D illuminating, through side window 8, the number plate. d) Optionally and only if the device is not fitted into the bodywork, the front side beam E emitted by an additional window drilled in the wall 4, the beam used to illuminate the part of the road free to height of crossings
Finally, the front headlights of the car are represented in:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
front headlight on the free side - idle;
G front headlight on the shoulder side, projecting diffused light.
However, it was specified that the dipped headlight could on the contrary be arranged in H on the left running board or the front wing. This is the case shown in Figure 5 which shows: la) The large rear side beam B as above; ) The small side beam front-E on the free side illuminating through side window as above; c) The independent red light C '.
The beam which is most important for the crossing is the rear side beam B, the purpose of which is twofold: a) to locate the overall dimensions of the car fitted with it; b) illuminate the free side and the free rear of the road, thus ensuring perfect visibility of any obstacles that may be or arise in this danger zone
The maneuver to cross is as follows:
The drivers, who are going, crossing, advancing towards the place of the crossing, and at a hundred meters, turn on their lighthouse-

st) rear night light and at the same time put their front shield on the free side (i.e. here the left headlight) while the front headlight, on the shoulder side (i.e. the right headlight) maintains its luminous intensity , but projects a suitable diffusing glass scattered light.
When they arrive at about fifteen meters from the said crossing, they give full light to their front headlights and turn off the rear headlights. During the operation, the road space between the two cars is sufficiently illuminated by the night lights, and the driver who comes to meet them, having in front of him a part of the road lit by the dipped headlight, can see - sees all the obstacles that appear on the luminous background as on a screen, screen on which also stands out the en-

bulge aeJBflroiture that it will cross.
Finally, it should be added that the dipped headlight facilitates reverse gear, by usefully illuminating obstacles behind the car.

EMI6.1
It is quite obvious that, assuming the bodywork of the car envisaged, the apparatus could be placed in a manner which is not apparent inside the boxes, running points, spiers or torpedoes, interior pipes, vans and others. trucks, any form of bodywork, as well as on the mudguards, running boards, etc. Depending on its arrangement, the headlight may vary in shape and size.
In all of the above, it is assumed that the direction of movement of the cars was to the right, but it is obvious that in the case where the vehicles take their left - (crossing on the left and overtaking on the right), the arrangement of the dipped headlight would simply be reversed, the maneuver for crossing remaining exactly the same.
It should be noted that the present invention completely leaves aside the already existing rear lantern systems which are intended to indicate the rear of the vehicle by a red light and to illuminate the number plate with a red light. white light. The use of the dipped-beam headlight should obviously not be considered * limiting and its role has been sufficiently specified for its character to be determined and for any other use, planned or not, to be reserved.
