<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

an inclination of about / 45 degrees, so that the cascade of dust thus formed, although falling with the thinness of a veil, is nevertheless of a uniform thickness, and not disturbed by the agglutinator which must be brought as described below, a condition absolutely necessary to obtain a very uniform impregnation of the coal dust and to take full advantage of the binding agent.
If in the sense of Figure 2 it is desired to prevent the formation of a cascade fall of the constituent material by means of a strapping 5 such as that of Figure 1, there will be a swirling cylindrical sheet such that it is suitable for cases where only small amounts of a light constituent material are to be processed.
Under the plate 4 is a distributor 8 which is particularly shown in Figures 3 and 4, and by means of which liquid binder can be added to the material, as described later. The distributor shown in figure. ;; consists of a hollow cylinder 10, in the periphery of which the inlet pipe 11 emerges tangentially and the cover 12 of which is shaped in a tabular shape functioning as a funnel. It is also possible to have two or more inputs, in order to increase the flow.
The degree of spraying of the agglutinant and the angle at the top of the dispersing rod depend on the tangential velocity with which the agglutinant is animated as it exits at the edge of the nozzle 12, therefore, they also depend on the vi - gyratory weave of this agglutinant in the hollow cylinder 10.
The degree of fineness of the spray can therefore be determined by choosing an appropriate size for the width of the hollow cylinder 10, the inlet tubing 11, the tubing 12 and the internal shape of these passages.
The cover of the distributor shown in FIG. 4 is arranged so that said distributor can be self-contained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
matically cleaned during operation.
To this end, the tubing has been divided into two parts 15 and 14, one of which 13 can rotate around the journal 15 and is pressed against the other part 14 by the action of a spring 16.
When we want to clean the distributor, we pull the metal wire 17 which brings back the part 13, which produces a tear opening thanks to which the distributor, still under pressure, can be emptied suddenly and from this chef cleaned immediately.
If a liquid is forced through the inlet nozzle 11, the latter will describe in the tube 12 a swirling movement as a result of which it will emerge from the distributor tube the state of a fine cylindrical liquid sheet.
This liquid, as can be seen from figure 1, takes, under the effect of centrifugal force and swirling, the form of a hollow rotary cone, of a dispersion cone which partly at due to the internal pressure of the suddenly discharged small liquid bubbles and partly due to centrifugal force, is then destroyed so that, as can be seen from Figure 1, it forms at the base of the . cone a rotating ring of liquid dust similar to cloudy mist which cuts through the veil formed by the coal dust. the arrangement of the apparatus is such that the swirling of the dispersion cone rotates in the opposite direction to the swirling of the carbon veil.
This results in the force, at the intersection surface, of vortices thanks to which the agglutinant being pulverized and having a cloudy consistency, mixes intimately with the coal dust, this agglutinant being thus folded back on the dust. of coal.
It is in this way that the whole down to the smallest percentage of binder can still be distributed evenly in this coal dust.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
If, as shown in Figure 2, one places opposite the distributor 8 the rotating member specially shown in Figure 5, the latter will be automatically rotated by the -billonnemcnt swirl of the liquid film coming from the distributor 8 ,
and there will follow the formation of a horizontal liquid film which will be destroyed at the edge partly by the effect of centrifugal force and partly by the internal pressure of the small liquid bubbles suddenly discharged, so as to constitute a fine cloudy dust. The ring of liquid dust thus closed will rotate in a direction opposite to the swirling of the. cascade of matter and will cut it; it is then that the mixing of this matter with its agglutinate takes place, under the formation of vortices in the latter, which will thus be reunited with it.
The ring of dust coming from the ho -ri @ ontale liquid film (fig. 2) will come under full pressure against the cascade of matter and will therefore have a percussive force far exceeding that of the ring of dust. the dispersion cone (fig. 1); this is why it will be used with advantage when in spawning heavy and coarse-grained constituent materials for the case and the walls of the cascade of these materials will be thicker.
In the manufacture of briquettes by this process, liquid, soluble or fusible agglutinants may be employed provided they can then set easily enough that the briquettes thus formed are fixed and transportable immediately after pressing. . It was found that briquettes manufactured in. using tars with a high phenol content,
were after heating and pressing, still soft as rubber, but nevertheless sufficiently well taken to lend themselves to transport, and (to acquire, shortly after, the hardness of a stone 'One also obtains from these briquettes by using mixtures of tars, phenols, bituminous materials and
