<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Figs.
Le ventilateur peut aussi servir éventuellement pour tirage forcé* Dans un cas comme celui que montrent les dessins, où l'on utilise un tel tirage, on dispose un tube spécial 10 au dessous des barreaux de la grillé; ce tube de tirage se prolonge jusque dans le cendrier du foyer, et il peut se terminer par un coude il pour diriger le tirage forcé vers le haut; ce coude est convenablement disposé de manière qu'on puisse le tourner par exemple à l'aide d'un volant a main 12 monté à l'extérieur du cendrier;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Near and apparatus for consuming and using smoke and combustion residues from fireplaces
The present invention relates to a method for consuming the smoke as well as to an apparatus for carrying out the method, the method and the apparatus allow not only to consume the smoke but also to use the results of the combustion.
After many experiments it has been found that it is possible to consume the smoke by a process whereby a pipe or channel - provided with means for projecting a flame therein and for establishing a current of gas therein. to support a combustion - is used to receive the smoke or the products of combustion ve-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
from the hearth, and to burn that smoke and said products (all together referred to as smoke} for the sake of brevity) before they exit.
The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a hollow member or member, forming a channel having to. one end an inlet for the smoke, and having the other end an outlet for it; the apparatus further comprises means for projecting a flame into the hollow element, as well as means for supplying gas supporting the combustion inside said element.
The hollow element which gives passage to the smoke may pour the water space of a boiler, or be otherwise arranged for the use of the heat from the combustion of the smoke.
The invention is particularly applicable to steam boilers, and in the case of this application, the hollow element extends from the smoke box through the water space; at the end attached to this box, the element in question has an inlet for the smoke, and it has an outlet at the other end; the means for projecting a flame and supplying a stream of gas to support the combustion in the hollow member are provided as mentioned above, and the assembly is so arranged that the smoke is consumed and that the heat produced by the combustion is used before the output of the burnt smoke.
It is important that the gas stream intended to support the combustion in the hollow member can pick up and propagate the slack effectively throughout the length and the entire width of said member.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, the application of the invention to a steam boiler *
Fig.1 is a vertical section of a boiler arranged for the consumption of smoke and for the use of heat produced by combustion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figs. 2 and 3 show respectively in cross section and in end view a construction variant of the apparatus.
The boiler is provided with a hollow element in the form of a tube 1, hereinafter referred to as "consumption tube"; this tube is arranged
Centrally and longitudinally inside the boiler; it extends from smoke box 2 through water chamber 3, and it exits the boiler at the end opposite to the smoke box.
The end 1a of the consumption tube 1, located inside the firebox, is open; the other end which protrudes outside the boiler is provided with a discharge tube 1b which can go to the chimney * a device 4, comprising a gas nozzle 5 and a nozzle 6, and provided with a opening 4a to enable the burner to be lit, is placed centrally in front of the end of the consumption tube in the smoke box. The nozzle 5 is preferably attached to a coal gas line, and the nozzle 6 is attached to a pipe 7 coming from a fan 8 which delivers compressed air; arrangements are made so that the air can project the flame from the nozzle inside the tube 1.
The fan can also be used optionally for forced draft. In a case such as that shown in the drawings, where such a draft is used, a special tube 10 is placed below the bars of the grill; this draft tube extends into the ashtray of the fireplace, and it can end with an elbow to direct the forced draft upwards; this elbow is suitably arranged so that it can be turned for example using a handwheel 12 mounted outside the ashtray;
the purpose of this arrangement is to make it possible to drop ash which would have entered the elbow and which would risk obstructing the tube 10. a valve 13 is also suitably provided for adjusting the air flow to through this tube. the boiler is heated by the fireplace 14 which is loaded with fuel through the opening 15, normally closed by the door
16. The smoke rises by the path indicated by the arrows, it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
passes through the flue 17, arrives in the smoke box 2 and enters through the open end 1a into the consumption tube 1 where it is burnt.
Waste gases escape through the discharge tube 1b
As is the volt, the smoke is burned by the combined action of air and gas spread over the entire length and across the entire width of the consumption tube 1, and if care is taken to properly regulate the supply of air and gas, the smoke is entirely erupted.
By modifying the arrangements described above, it will be possible to consume the smoke by sending a portion of it into the hearth and another portion into the special exhaust tube.
The Fige. 2 and 3. show an apparatus specially designed for this purpose. The consuming tube 20 is arranged as described above, except that the positions of the outlet and of the gas and air supply device are reversed; this device 21 is here placed at the end of the tube 20 which protrudes outside the boiler, while the outlet 20b of the tube is on the side of the smoke box 23.
In this case, a tube 22 has also been provided going from the smoke box 23 to the forced draft tube 10; said tube 22 serves to lead the smoke from the box 23 to the elbow 11 which directs it upwards. below the fireplace. a tube 24 has also been provided, the inlet 25 of which is located directly above the point where the forced draft tube opens into the ashtray; the tube 24 rises and communicates at its outlet 20 with the consumption tube 20, near the end thereof provided with the gas and air supply device 21, the construction of which is similar to that shown in Fig.l. The tube 24 is preferably provided with an adjustment valve 27.
Thanks to these arrangements, a portion of the smoke together with the air coming from the fan is sent upwards through the fire, and the other portion passes through the tube 24 into the consumption tube 20, the proportion between the two portions
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of smoke being regulated by the Valve 27. The consumption of the smoke itself in the tube 20 taking place as previously described.
It is evident that with the two constructions, the ashtray and the various passages for smoke and air must be airtight, and the proportions between the different parts of the appliance must be calculated so that the flame acts on all the smoke which passes through the hollow element, and this long enough for the consumption of this smoke to be assured.
Since the consumption tube passes through the water space of the boiler, the heat produced by the combustion of the smoke is made useful for heating the water, and the efficiency of the boiler is increased.
In the devices described by way of example, coal gas is used to produce the flame, but it is understood that other means can be used for this purpose, such as, for example, heavy oils, more particularly in when these oils are used as fuel in the fireplace; we can also use the electric arc like that used in metallurgical electric furnaces *.
