<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Electric pyrograph
In patent N 328,750 of September 12, 1925, a characterized electric pyrograph was described. mainly by removing the heating rheostat. usual, the heat setting being obtained by sliding the heating resistors on or in the tip, or conversely by sliding the tip inside the resistors, this sliding being able to be achieved either by a helical ram , either by rapid thread screw, or by rectilinear movement, or even by suitable flexible transmission.
The main object of this first improvement patent is to specify in a more complete manner the object and the scope of the invention, while indicating some simple variations of embodiment.
@
The role of the protective cap of the resistors will first of all be specified. This cap in refractory material or not protects the heating resistor and its assembly from the outside.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
assembly, and leaves only the part of the tip - necessary for the work.
In fact, in pyrographs, the resistance must be protected from the outside and the user must be himself protected from resistances and electrified parts. Any fragile or electrified part is, in general, in the device, protected by an insulated or insulating assembly: handle, cap, etc .; none of the outer metal parts is in contact with one of the poles of the current, therefore all the parts to be handled are electrically isolated which is not, in general, achieved in similar devices.
The handle is calorically insulated from the heating part by-the mechanical relationship of these two parts by means of refractory parts which are poor conductors of heat -in the cap species, soapstone and mica-; the metal parts, if necessary, are reduced to their simplest form and arranged to conduct heat as little as possible. This point is of great importance in this apparatus which does not heat up, even after several hours of work, while any conventional pyrograph must be cooled after 30 minutes of use.
In order to better understand the details which will follow, 40 has shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment of the invention in which the resistors slide over the tip for heat control.
In this drawing: fig.l, shows the whole of the apparatus seen in elevation; fig.2 and 2a show in longitudinal section on a large scale the assembly of the various components; fig.3, is a detail view of the wheel and its split sleeve along a helical ramp; fig.4, shows an alternative embodiment of the tip.
As we have seen in the main patent, the tip 1 of the device is made, preferably, of a resistant alloy which does not oxidize much, such as nickel-chromium which is four times
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
stronger than steel at 800 * 0. Nickel-chromium is, however, a very poor conductor and, in order to obtain better heat distribution, it has been necessary to use a hollow point filled with silver or places mounted on silver.
In this way, the heating of the tip for the same resistance can be increased (or decreased by the addition of an internal reinforcement in metal which is very good conductor of heat: silver or other (or not).
With regard to the structure of the heating resistors, it is quite obvious that any refractory insulation: mica, special cement or other, could be used for the 'constituting the insulating blocks 16 and 24 as well as for the covering. ment of the slide II.
The heat adjustment can be achieved as in Figure 2, by sliding the heating resistors (that is to say of the slide 11) on the tail of the point. It can also be obtained by the sliding of the heating part in the point, or conversely by the sliding of the point on the heating part either directly or by means of an appendage forming part of the resistance and penetrating into The point.
Thus, in the example shown in FIG. 4, an axial hole 30 'has been formed inside the point, into which penetrates more or less deeply, An appendage 11' terminating the solid cylinder 1111 bearing the heating resistors and here replacing the slider, tubular 1.1 The sliding of this appendage in the point regulates the heat, which is practical, provides a notable simplification in the construction.
According to the embodiment shown in figs.S and Sa, the contact sleeve 18, forming the second pole of the resistors, is wedged at the end of the tube 22 threaded at its lower end and screwed onto the insulating block 24. It is on this tube which is welded by the second wire 39 'which passes through the hole 43 of the inner tube 26 to join the first wire 39, the two wires being spaced from each other in line with the pin 7, so that this passes between the two wires.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The invention cannot, moreover, be limited to the execution standard which has just been described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
It has already been pointed out in particular that the relative displacement of the resistors with respect to the tip could be obtained by any other device; as to the very nature of the resistors, their shape may be completely cylindrical as shown, or aon if deemed preferable from a manufacturing point of view.
In addition, the use of all or part of the thermoelectric device described above should be reserved for electrical heating in general, and more particularly for the construction of medical, thermo-cautery or other devices: .-, or precision soldering irons and other similar devices, these various applications falling within the scope of the present invention.
