 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

    SELF-ADJUSTABLE BRAKE PEDALS AND IEYIERS The present invention relates to brake controls with automatic adjustment of the clearances generated by all so-called “self-adjusting” high-power levers or pedals in which the clearances due to both flexion and wear of the brake linings. brakes or axles, are automatically compensated.

   It relates more particularly to all new applications of these improved means to the pedals (or levers) of motor vehicles, airplanes or other vehicles, either with a view to playing the role of brake servo; or to actuate under improved conditions the so-called "self-mutlpileés" brakes or the mechanical or fluid vacuum servo-brakes provided or not with so-called "self-regulating" devices to prevent the wheels from stalling.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The principles of mechanical realization of the invention are as follows; :
Preferably attach to the pedal itself or to the clevis that connects it to. the rod, control, a latching device (pawl, and) ..) which takes up the play of the linkage so that, when the pedal exceeds a limit position chosen by the manufacturer, this pawl escapes from the tooth in contact and come, under the action of a suitable spring to engage on the neighboring tooth of a threaded take-up sleeve whose angular displacement acts when loosening on the linkage rod in the direction of its shortening so in this way, to compensate for all the play due to wear of the brake linings and to all other causes.

   The mechanical realization of this invention can be achieved by the various means described below by way of example only.

   Figures 1 and 2 are general views of the principle of the device. Fig.3 shows the system on a larger scale. On this station, the position at the time of the action is shown in mixed dots. FIG. 4 is a variant showing schematically a special arrangement of one of the regulating members.

   The pins 5, 6 and 7 8, 9 and 10, represent two other embodiments of the device.

   In the principle figures 1 2 and 3 a fork pedal 1 reo an axis 2 crossed by the journal of a regulation part 3 stopped on the axis 2 by a nut, This part 3 carries a rocket 5 and is threaded interior to receive the threaded rod 4 connected to the wheelhouses. A pawl 6 fixed by a pin 7 on the pedal 1 is held against the teeth of the ratchet 5 by a spring 6
In Fig. 3, we can easily see the operation. When the pedal has reached a limit angle of movement (this position being that shown in phantom), the pawl 6 passes through a tooth of the ratchet 5 under the action of the spring 8 (Figs. 1 and 2).

   During the return of the pedal, the pawl 6 ', driven up and down, forces the ratchet 5 to turn by the value of one tooth and this rotation has

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the effect of screwing part 3 onto the rod 4 'and automatically taking up the play due to wear of the linings.

   FIG. 4 is an alternative embodiment, given by way of schematic example, showing that the. pawl 6 can be mounted on an independent part of the pedal, so as to act on an inclined toothed wheel such as 5, but during the return period of. the pedal only, because this pawl 6, subjected to the action of the catch spring 8 is articulated at 7 and can only pivot forward.

   In Figures 5, 6 and 7, the device is mounted on the yoke of the linkage control rod 18, an improvement which allows the use of any existing pedal. the ordinary pedal 1 is read back through the axis 2 to a special yoke 2 which receives a regulating part 3 forming a socket for the screw 4 connected to the rod 18 and which can rotate angularly in the yoke 2 being maintained in the longitudinal position by a nut 28
On part 3 is permanently screwed a ratchet 5 on which can move a pawl 6 held by a spring 8 connected by a pin 7 and by an arm 23 to a movable part 24 whose other arm 25 carries a ball 26 ( Fig.

  7) connected by a ball joint 27 to a lever 14 integral with the pedal 1 (Fig. 3, 5 and 6) .-
The movable part 24 is held longitudinally on the part 3 by a nut 15 itself stopped by a brake 16. The screw 4 connected to the timer 18 can move inside the socket part 3, being mounted from so that it cannot turn around its axis. the screw 4 carries a dust cover 19 fitted with a lubricator 20 which may include the improved arrangements 21 and 22 of FIGS. 8, 9 and 10 1 the operation is as follows:

   ! When pedal 1 is pressed, the screw and nut system moves to the left (fig. 5) its position varying very little in relation to its initial axis,
But the lever 14 being driven from bottom to top, transmits through the rod 127 to the arm 25 and consequently to the movable part 24 an angular displacement around the part 3, the pawl 6 tends to do under the action of the rotation. , to cross a tooth of ratchet 5 and cross it when * the angle

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 written by the pedal has reached a determined value, braking taking place as with an ordinary linkage,
When pedal 1 returns to its rest position,

   the lever 14 by moving from top to bottom will consequently force the moving part 24 and the pawl 6 to rotate the sleeve 3 in the opposite direction which will be screwed by the amount corresponding to a tooth on the screw 4 integral with the linkage 18 this which will therefore automatically determine in the entire wheelhouse a shortening corresponding to the various clearances which caused the pawl 6 to cross.

   It follows that it is no longer necessary to take into account, in the establishment of the wheelhouses, the pedal strokes currently required by said games, in order to avoid too frequent adjustments. As a result, the useful stroke of the pedal becoming greater, it is possible to amplify the gear ratio of the linkages as much, which achieves, for the same pedal force, greater braking forces on each of the wheels.

   These industrial advances therefore have the advantages of) removing the brake adjustments, 2.) making the driving of the veitu more pleasant due to the lower muscular effort to be exerted by the wodndute to obtain the braking * Figures 8, 9 and 10 showing a simplified construction variant reducing the bulk of the previous devices, in which the corresponding parts bear the same reference numbers and the operation is identical,

   the fixed ratchet 5 is cut on a lateral face and engages directly with the moving part 24 tooth the adjoining face is arranged as a movable ratchet firm 24, the whole being held in the snap-in position by a spring 29 Va another particularity of this device (figs. 8, 9 and the) applicable to those of the other figures by way of improvement is that of the lubrication. the grease nipple 20 is connected to the central channel 21 of the screw 4 and two holes 42 allow the oil or grease to emerge directly into the threading engaging the screw 4 and the part 3.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   Although these improved devices have been made more especially for applications to automobile pedal boats, it is understood that they can also be used in all their combinations and for all requests of any kind likely to elongate as a result of 'wear or other causes (hand levers for automobiles or controlling the organs of all other vehicles such as the braking of aircraft landing gears, in order to allow the latter to be braked under the conditions the safest, etc .....)
The achievements of said devices can be obtained by any other means than those given by way of example,

   their principles of action must consist essentially in making up the clearances only from the moment when the well-determined positions and limits of the pedal are exceeded and when only the said pedal is returned, the axis of the pedal. pawl or take-up device which can be arranged in a movable or variable position, that is to say either directly on the pedal itself, or on the yoke of the linkage rod, or on an independent support, constituting preferably an elastic shock absorber of the ratchet socket,
This is why the embodiments of the invention are in no way limited to the summary provisions which have been given by way of example only to facilitate the exposition of the principles of action.

   The device may therefore comprise either a toothed pinion, or a plate or a sector furnished with helical toothing, with all means arranged in order to achieve the same regulation effects by all snap-fastening members assembled by means of teeth or inclined planes.
