 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  Process for the purification of crude benzols, etc.

   Up to now, the crude benzols obtained from coal tar or obtained by distillation of the washing oils which have been used for the debenzoling of the gases (recovered benzols) have been purified, by treating them with acids and with alkalis. This treatment generally causes inevitable and fairly large losses through the formation of emulsions and resins.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   However, it has been found according to the present invention that it is possible to transform the crude benzols or the recovered benzols into pure, neutral and saturated products, by treating them in the presence of catalysts, at high temperature and under pressure, preferably under high pressures, for example of 50 atmospheres and more, by hydrogen or gases which contain it or which are capable of giving up, in such a way that a modification of the benzene itself does not occur or all at most in small proportion.

   It is possible to use as contact masses those which lend themselves to the hydrogenation under pressure of carbon, tars and mineral oils, that is to say in particular those which are not affected by sulfur and other impurities, for example, masses containing chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, etc. Pure benzene can be obtained by distillation of the product thus treated together with other high-value, low-boiling hydrocarbons.

     EXAMPLE 1
Recovered crude benzol obtained by distillation. the water vapor of a debenzolating oil of any origin saturated with benzol, is directed continuously, towards 450 under 150 to 200 atmospheres of pressure, with a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen, the hydrogen consumed by the reaction being replaced by fresh gas, Him, a contact mass prepared by compressing molybdic acid and magnesia and placed in a high pressure tube consisting of chromium nickel steel. hydro- product

 high value, low boiling point, pure benzene in almost quantitative yield.

   EXAMPLE 2.

   A dark colored crude recovered benzol, which contains thiophene, is directed continuously to 460, with a stream of hydrogen at 200 atmospheres of pressure. on a molybdenum-zinc-based contact mass prepared by compressing molybdic acid and zinc oxide and placed in an aluminum-coated high pressure tube. A clear product is obtained, free from incomplete compounds and thiophene, which distills off absolutely pure benzene and a small percentage of high-value, low-boiling point hydrocarbons.

   Commercial benzene which contains thiophene can also be completely freed from it by this treatment.

Claims (1)

ABSTRACT The subject of the invention is a process for the purification of crude benzols or recovered benzols, consisting in treating them at high temperature and under pressure, optionally under high pressure, in the presence of catalysts. , by hydrogen or by gases which contain it or which are capable of yielding it, in such a way that a modification of the benzene itself does not occur or at most in a small proportion.
