<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
res.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Method and device for plotting cyclic curves"
The object of the present invention is a method as well as a device which allows its implementation, thanks to which it is possible to describe cyclic curves of the most diverse species, and any equidistant to these curves, from a way that is both economical and satisfactory in terms of precision. The term "cyclic curves" is understood to mean mainly epicycloids and hypocycloids, either normal or? .1 - lengthened or shortened, as seen in the application, for example, to the teeth of the most varied shapes.
According to the invention, the workpiece and the tool are moved with respect to each other in the desired curved path, and cycloids are described when the workpiece or the tool perform in at the same time two rotational movements
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
res. It does not matter whether two movements are performed at the same part or else separately.
The movement around the axis of the system corresponds to a uniform unfolding of this rolling role on the original circle, while the movement of the point generating the curve is produced by a circular movement of the body of the entire part in work or the whole tool. The radius of this circular movement cited last must be equal to the distance which exists between the point generating the curve and the center of the rolling circle.
The angular speeds of the two rotational motions have between them the relation expressed by: radius of the original circle -1 radius of the rolling circle radius of the rolling circle and, in this expression, the sign + refers to epicy- colids with opposite directions of movement while, for hypocycloids, which are distinguished by movements in the same direction, it is the difference in the rays that comes into play.
It follows the possibility, by means of an inversion of passing from the direction of rotary motion of a hypocycloid to that of an epicycloid as the need arises, for example, to produce the toothings or cycloid that one con arises, where the part of the curve located outside the subdivision circle belongs to an epicycloid while the part located inside belongs to a hypocycloid. i, owing to the fact that the diameters of the rolling circles of the two parts of the curve frequently differ, the circular motion when passing from one curve to the other must be changed at the same time, which is quite simple to obtain, for example, by means of a movement either amplified or diminished for gyration of the stationary part.
In the case where, in particular, the radii of the rolling circles would be r1, and 12, the circulatory movement of the workpiece could be accomplished with an eccentric radius equal to r1 + r2 in both directions of rotation
2 and choose for the gyratory movement of the tool r1 - r2 in
2 a direction of rotation. We would end up then, depending on the direction
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of rotation of the first part to an overall movement which would correspond to an eccentric radius r1 or r2 (in the opposite rotational direction).
In the event that the workpiece is forced to perform both movements to achieve cycloidal trajectories of uniform appearance, all the points of the disc or of the grinding wheel describe more or less irregular cycloids, at a determined distance from the center of the disc but still giving the desired curve, which can then be performed by a tool held at this distance. Or, for example, a steel drum driven by a back and forth movement.
The most favorable conditions for obtaining a given curve exist when the tool which is to produce it is constantly maintained, with a large bearing surface, normally to said curve. The operating surface of the tool must, when the curve is concave, have, to avoid cutting from below, a radius of curvature smaller than] the smallest of the radii of curvature of the curve. When it comes to cyclic curves it is possible to keep the tool in normal position.
There is in particular application of the law according to which the normal to a cycloid must pass through the point of contact of the original circle and the rolling circle. It was further observed that, as the rolling circle unfolds at a uniform speed, the normal also progresses over a second circle at a uniform speed. The radius of this circle is expressed by:
distance between the generating point and the center of the rolling circle - the radius of the original circle radius of the rolling circle
By taking advantage of these truths, it is possible, in accordance with the invention, to obtain a cyclic curve with a tool arranged rotatably about an axis situated in the cycloid path and this direction. would attach to the tool a tiltable arm by an angled spindle moving with the workpiece. The spindle would move either on the ring
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
original key, at the rate of the unwinding speed, or on a second circle, designated above, at the rate of the angular speed of the rolling circle.
Instead of having a tool arranged in a tiltable manner, it can be left stationary and instead make the workpiece tiltable around the tool.
The tool holder can affect the conformation of a carriage on which the tool would move, so as to be able to draw equidistant cycloids at will.
To remedy tool wear, it suffices to adjust it accordingly. This tool can perform axial movements of the type of planing or else perform a slow movement in the axial direction, so as to have the workpiece in a descending trajectory in the form of a spiral. For the adjustment of the grinding discs, provision has been made for the adaptation of a trimming diamond which, by turning, reduces the grinding wheel to a diameter a little less than the smallest radius of curvature of the curve to be described by fixing at the same time the correct posittion of the operating surface. All that is required is to adapt it, without further complication, to determined time intervals, and to cause the grinding disc to advance correspondingly, so that an equalization is automatically produced redeeming the wear of this wheel.
The machine can, moreover, be arranged so that its movements are completely automatic, hence the possibility of having a whole series of machines supervised by a single man.
The accompanying drawings show the mode of operation of this method as well as an exemplary embodiment of a device used for carrying out this method.
Figure 1 gives the side view of a grinding machine for practicing the method; FIG. 2 is the view of this machine, in horizontal projection corresponding to this FIG. 1; Figure 0 shows in section and on an enlarged scale the machine shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 shows the member carrying the workpiece

FIG. 9 is a schematic representation of the mode of operation of the applied method; FIG. 10 shows a shortened epicycloid, with the construction lines serving as a basis for the execution of the method; FIG. 11 shows a hypocycloid obtained in a similar fashion.
It can be seen, in FIG. 9, that the tool 1 is placed in an oscillating manner about an axis 2 while the part in. work 3 performs a double movement. One of these movements consists of turning along the path of an eccentric 4, and econ- dently, it rotates around an axis 5 at an angular speed which is uniform, but different from that of the excen - trique, from which it follows that the points situated at the periphery of the disc 3 describe a trajectory in cycloid 6. The tilting of the tool 1 is caused by a lever 7 connected to the tool holder and by a toc d drive 8 with gyratory play around axis 5, in proportion to the angular speed of movement of the eccentric. and slidable in a guide slide 9 made in the lever 7.
The lines 10 represent the maximum angular deviation of the tool 1. In the case where, as indicated, the tool does not act at point 2, and therefore not following "the path 6, but rather sideways, it would form a curve 11 equidistant from the cycloid, as is applied, for example, in the layout of special gear teeth.

In the patent application / for the "transmission mechanism or set of gears" filed on November 19, 1926 in the minutes of filing 6591 by the same inventor an application of this category has been shown.
In FIG. 10 an epicycloid has been represented, and in FIG. 11 a hypocycloid; the original circle radius has been denoted by a while b denotes the radius of the rolling circle. The distance between the generating point and the center of the rolling circle is equal to e while r is the radius of the construction circle of the normals.

gure 1 the machine. consists of a base, a tool with carriage. and rectifying device by a lathe work, a control arrangement for the vertical movement of the tool, another arrangement carrying the workpiece and a tilting arrangement with control for the one carrying the workpiece.
We added to the base 21 (figures 1, 2 and 3) a trolley
22 with guide cut in dovetail. by means of a lead screw 23 or feed screw housed rotatably in a hub 24 of the carriage, the ascent and descent of this carriage is carried out by rotating a nut 25. There is a displacement device at the hand, produced by two bevel gears 26, one of which is attached to the lead screw 23 while the other, which has not been shown, is attached by a threaded spindle with a handwheel 27 The tool, or a grinding disc 20, is housed on the carriage 22 in a support 28 with carriage guide.
To make the disc 20, by turning, a radius smaller than the smallest radius of curvature of the curve to be obtained, we use a diamond
31 which is embedded in a housing 32 which can rotate around a bolt 33. The bolt is fixed in a small carriage 34 (see also FIG. 8) which, by a nut 35, is engaged with a lead screw 29; the pitch of this lead screw is double that carried by a threaded sleeve which is located on a reduced part around the lead screw 29 and which, by means of a nut 36, performs the displacement of the support 28 of the grinding washbasin. Under these conditions, the diamond which is used to remove the material on the lathe is pushed to the right twice as fast as the grinding disc.
As a result, the cutting edge of the grinding wheel always maintains exactly the same position after each adjustment. Relative displacement of the grinding wheel and the diamond is achieved by means of a helical pitch wheel 37 fixed to a lead screw 38, which is actuated from the outside by means of a handwheel 39 after loosening. pre-

lable a nut 18 which is placed over a handwheel 30 and which holds the sleeve @@ to keep it from rotating on the threaded shaft 29. On the carriage 22 there is provided a console which carries a drive motor 41 serving the grinding disc. Guide rollers 42 and 43 are used to tension the belt.
The member 51 which carries the workpiece is in the form of a carriage and can be mounted on an arm 52 in a radial direction relative to the axis 53 of rotation of the arm (Figures 3, 4 and 5).
In a similar way we have provided at the bottom, in addition to the arm
52, a support 54 movable in the radial direction. it is in an arm 56 of the base 21 that the arm 52 is suspended to oscillate around the vertical axis 53. A main shaft 55 is, on the other hand, housed in the support 54 and in the member.
51 carrying the workpiece. For the actuation of the main shaft 55 there is a pulley 57, a pulley which is actuated by another pulley 58 placed above the machine, the transmission passing through guide rollers 60 fixed to a rocking arm 59. The pulley 57 is fixed on a shaft 61 (FIG. 6) which carries in time a toothed wheel 62 meshing with a toothed wheel 63.
The latter is fixed to a bush 64 which, by means of a wedge, transmits its rotary movement to a shaft 65 without, however, preventing a longitudinal movement. Part of the shaft 65 is formed by a worm 66 which meshes with a worm gear 67 attached to the main shaft 55. A housing 68 acts to hold the shaft 65 in the correct position relative to the main shaft. the worm gear 67.
At the top end, the shaft 55 is provided with an axial perforation 70 into which enters a shaft 71 of the workpiece-holder arrangement, properly called, a shaft driven by means of a wedge 72. This shaft 71 carries a spare wheel 73 which meshes with a second spare wheel 74 attached to a shaft 75. A wheel 76 also attached to the shaft 75 operates, by a

intermediate wheel 69 fixed '/ on a shaft 83 (FIG. 2) a toothed wheel 77 which is fixed on a bush 78. This nozzle housed in the cover 79 of the tool holder, in turn serves to support the shaft 71. Its upper end, which is reinforced, laterally has surfaces 80 and 81 on which the intermediate piece 82 of a crossing carriage arrangement fits.
This intermediate piece has, perpendicularly to the two surfaces 80 and 81, two other surfaces, and it follows that the upper part 85 of the crossing carriage is completely free to move in the lateral direction. It is in a nozzle 86 screwed to the part 85 that the workpiece 87 is planted, and a nut 88 is used for fixing on the nozzle 86. On the inner shaft 71 is fixed an eccentric 89, by means of a shim 90. The sleeve 86 turns on the eccentric 89. A screw 91, at the end of the shaft 71, holds the eccentric 89 in place by means of a washer 92, and gives to the nozzle 86 an axial guide. A bush 93 which is attached to the nozzle 86 serves to protect the crossing carriage against any ingress of dirt or emery powder.
A similar socket 94, of the same destination, is attached to the socket 78. In order to avoid idling, brakes 95 are provided which are pressed from the inside, by springs 96, against the edge of the cylinder. bush 94. For the same purpose, a braking disc 97 has been placed at the upper end of the main shaft 55 against which the brake members pressed by springs (and not shown in the drawings) act.
In this way, the workpiece is made to take two circular movements, one of which is slow, by the toothed wheels 73 74, 76, 69 and 77, the nozzle 78 and the arrangement of the carriage. crossing, and a rapid pace \ directly transmitted by the eccentric nozzle 89; it is the union of the movements which describes the desired curves, namely hypocycloids during a uniform movement of the 'tree 71
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
and nozzle 78 / and epicycloids when moving in opposite directions. To obtain a hypocycloid, it is therefore necessary to deactivate the intermediate wheel 69 and bring the gear 76 into direct engagement with the toothed wheel 77.
The tilting movement of the workpiece is operated by a beam 101 (see figure 3 and dimension 55), the distance from the axis of the main shaft which is the drive shaft 55 can be adjusted by a slider or carriage 102. The slider carrier 103 is fixed to the main shaft 55. The nozzle 101 provides guidance for a tenon 104 of a carriage 105 which travels in a sliding track 106. The latter is fixed. at the base 21 of the machine under the interposition of an interlayer 107.
At each rotation of the main shaft, the nozzle 101 performs an orbital movement along a greater or lesser radius, in correspondence with the focus given to the carriage 102. However, the tenon 104 can only perform rectilinear strokes backwards - back and forth, because of the guidance in the slide 106. The components of the orbital movement in a direction perpendicular to this slide are transmitted to the arm 52 and therefore to the workpiece 87, so that the movement of the orbital occurs. sliding crank shown in figure 9.
So that the actuation of the workpiece gives rise at the same time to the advancement of the tool, a plate 111 is added to the arm 52, fitted with a mortise 112 (FIG. 6). An angled arm 114 is held in this mortise by tightening a screw They. The end of this arm carries a bolt 115 which, by means of a coupling rod 116, actuates a mutator mechanism 117. This rocking movement is transmitted, in a known manner by a roller or other rolling body 118. on a central mutation piece 119. By focusing the bent arm 114 to adjust its position in the mortise 112, the tilting can be varied within wide limits.
The central mutator 119 is connected to the nut 25 by the intermediary
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
area of a coupling / toothing 120 and by this fact, as has already been explained, it carries out the advancement of the worktable. The gear coupling is moved and focused using an adjustable stop 124 on the carriage 22 (see figure 1) and a stop lever 122, a shaft 123 and a fork 121 acting to transmitting the movement to the mutator 119 or change organ.
As for the water required for cooling the grinding disc, it is supplied by a pump (which has not been shown). The flowing water is collected in a collecting tank 125 and through an opening 126 it can pass into the hollow shaft 53 from where its current can flow, through an opening 127, into the suction chamber. of the pump.
