<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvement in carburettors for internal combustion engines
The majority of carburettors for combustion engines have several jets, one of which is generally used for starting and running the engine at idle, the other or others for running the engine under load at different speeds.
The speed of the engines operating motor vehicles is quite variable and frequently the engine is driven by the driving force of the vehicle, in slowing down, descending, braking, changing speed, etc ... The throttle or valve of the carburetor is then brought back. to the idle position and the running nozzle no longer delivers, but the idle jet that remains open continues to deliver unnecessarily as long as the engine is driven by the vehicle's driving force.
The purpose of the device which is the subject of the patent is to avoid the loss of fuel which results in a device which allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the idle jet when the engine speed exceeds a certain value and which includes a needle, or valve actuated either electrically, or by the action of centrifugal force, or by using the oil pressure of the lubrication system or the water pressure in the case of forced water circulation for cooling.
In the accompanying drawing which shows by way of example some practical embodiments of the invention:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a carburetor fitted with an electrical device,
Figures 2 to 4 show the diagram of the electrical connections necessary for operation.
Figures 5 and 6 show the arrangements that use centrifugal force and water or oil pressure
FIG. 7 shows a variant of FIG. 1 in the case where, to ensure the acceleration of the engine, the two nozzles must deliver at the same time.
The carburetor shown in fig. 1 comprises a normal running jet 1, and an idle jet 2.
The butterfly 3 in its closed position shown in the drawing, leaves open the duct 4 communicating with legicleur 2, This nozzle is according to the invention provided with a shutter needle rod 5 maintained normally raised by a spring 6 but which is subjected to the action of an electromagnet 7 which closes it atomically by attracting the soft iron plate 8 as soon as the motor speed exceeds a certain value.
To this end, this electromagnet is mounted in the general electrical circuit of the car supplied by a generator. according to the arrangement shown in FIG. 2, the ge-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
generator being represented at 9, the contactor at 10 and the battery supplied by this generator at 11, the electromagnet 7 is mounted as a bypass between the contactor and the generator. When the engine is idling, the current supplied by it is insufficient to actuate the electromagnet and the nozzle 2 remains open. As the motor accelerates the dynamo current increases, attracts the pad 8 and closes the needle 5.
The assembly must be adjusted so that at this moment the engine is no longer supplied by the idling jet, but by the running jet so that the first can be closed without changing the engine speed,
When the speed decreases, the reverse occurs, the generator no longer delivering sufficient output, the electromagnet no longer retains the shutter closed, and the latter is returned to the open position by the action of the spring 6 , The electromagnet 7 instead of being connected in shunt to the terminals of the dynamo can be (fig. 3) inserted in series in the load circuit. In this case, the shutter operates at a higher speed than in the first case.
According to the arrangement of FIG. 4, the electromagnet, instead of being permanently connected to the terminals of the dynamo, is only energized when the generator is connected to the battery by the jumper 10.
If the vehicle does not have a general electrical installation, or if. this could not be used; a special generator operated by the engine could be used.
Fig. 5 represents a device according to the-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which the shutter needle 5 is controlled by a centrifugal force regulator 12 driven by the motor.
FIG. 6 represents a device according to which the shutter 5 is kept normally open under
Inaction of a counter spring 6a acting on the lower faoe of a piston 13 moving inside a cylinder 14 and placed in communication with, for example, the engine oil line. As soon as the engine reaches a determined speed, the oil pressure increases and the spring calibrated for this purpose bends, allowing the piston to close the shutter.
The same arrangement can be adopted by using the water pressure at the outlet of the pump from the water circulation of the cooling system and in case there is no oil or water pump, the The shutter could be operated by a special small pump driven by the motor.
In carburettors on which to ensure the acceleration of the engine the idle jet must still continue to deliver the device can / be used but must be supplemented by a control mechanism preventing it from functioning, that is to say say preventing the idle jet from closing until the normal running jet itself is closed.
This mechanism (fig. 7) can be constituted, for example, by a cam 15 mounted on the axis of the butterfly 3 and which, by rotating integrally with it at the time of its opening, acts on an angled lever 16, the branch 16a of which keeps the plate raised. 8 and prevents the action of the electromagnet
The same result can be obtained electrically by means of a contact suitably wedged on the throttle control, and which removes the current in the electric with the shutter in the on position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
while allowing him to establish himself at the talent position! .
The same provision may moreover be applied to carburettors comprising only one nozzle serving at idle speed and when running under load.
In all the devices described above, the antagonist springs can be provided to be adjustable, to allow the shutter moment to be varied as a function of the speed so as to satisfy the differences in the adjustment of the carburetors. They can be by an appropriate arrangement , removed and replaced by Inaction of gravity.
Whatever system is employed, the same result can be obtained by closing off by the same devices either the fuel supply to the idling jet, or the jet itself, or the admission of the fuel mixture to the cylinder.
Finally, the invention is not limited to any particular constructive arrangement, those described and shown having been chosen only by way of example.
