<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Improvements" in presses for ironing clothes
The present addition refers to the presses for ironing clothes, described in the main patent, which have a support plate and a movable plate, which can be moved from the rear of the machine above the support plate and be then descended vertically on this support plate.
The object of the addition is devices for adjusting the movement of the movable plate produced by means of guide notches placed on the sides of the frame of the machine and supporting the members which carry this movable plate, without fixed pivots, so as to give this tray
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mobile great ease of movement and to increase the power with a press of small dimensions, to decrease the cost of the construction and to eliminate several organs, while increasing the efficiency of the press.
The addition also aims to give the member which carries the movable plate a certain freedom of movement and to construct this member in metal blades, so as to allow it to bend to adapt to the unequal thickness between the fixed and mobile platforms. The addition provides means for being able to adjust the position of this member by simple and adjustable devices. Another object of the present addition is to construct a frame or a support which carries guides or guide notches, in which move rollers fixed to the frame which carries the movable platen, so as to give or print to this plate and to the frame which supports it, the movement indicated above.
A further object of the addition is a simplified construction which allows the frame which carries the movable plate to be moved downwards, so as to produce a forward movement followed by a downward movement, which effects the movement. pressing operation. Means are provided which tend at all times to lift the frame which carries the movable plate, so as to place it in its highest position, the movable plate being in this position at the upper end of its stroke. , behind the machine, and away from the fixed plate. -Finally, the purpose of the addition is to construct a frame in metal strips, which makes this frame very light while being absolutely rigid.
The organ which carries the movable plate is made in the same way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
On the appended destinies, there is shown by way of example, a construction method according to the present addition.
In these drawings, 'Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the press, the movable plate being shown in solid lines, in its fully open position, and at the rear of the machine, and in dotted lines. , in its intermediate position, that is to say in the position which precedes the final downward movement, which produces the -pressing operation.
Figure 2 is a partially sectioned vertical elevational view showing the movable platen fully lowered to the position where it performs the pressing operation with the pedal lever closed.
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken through line 111-111 of Figure 1 looking towards the rear of the press.
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross section taken through the line IV-IV of Figure 1.
The frame or the frame of the sa chine comprises a plate 1 and an upper plate 2, these two plates preferably being provided with reinforcing edges., And connected by an intermediate element constituted by similar members 3 and 3a in blades of steel of a specific shape given to the press. These members are connected together from any known den, for example by electric welding, by riveting or in any other manner.
The members 3 and 3a have a substantially L-shaped section in section, as can be seen in FIG. 4, and their lower parts are preferably understood so as to penetrate into the member 1, to which they are attached, in order to give more rigidity to the frame. The edges of the members are separated in their anterior part, so as to form a notch or a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
certificate opening 4 which extends over the entire length of the frame. the support 5 of the fixed plate 5 is placed on the upper plate 2, the plate 6, which can take any shape, being fixed on this support
5.
The movable plate is indicated at 7 and has a shape such that it conforms to the surface of the fixed plate.
These members may be provided with suitable fabric linings, not shown, and may include orifices not shown, into which the pipes are introduced through which the -vapor can enter, in order to heat the trays, and to be projected onto the clothing. Suitable vacuum or suction hoses are also employed, but none of these hoses is shown, not forming part of the present invention. The movable plate 7 is fixed to an arm or a member 8 extending in front of the support frame. The lower part or the arm 9 of this frame is inclined towards the front slightly more than at a right angle, with respect to the upper member to which the plate is fixed.
In other words, the support frame affects the general line of an inverted l and forms an angle smaller than a right angle. This frame or this support member is preferably made of curved steel blades and may have a relatively wide part provided with side edges extending rearward 10 and 10 '.
A handle 11 is placed at the anterior end of the arm 8, so that the frame and the tray can be advanced by hand, if desired.
Each of the side members 3 and 3a is provided with two guide notches or with two openings, support elements being fixed to these plates in the vicinity of these openings, Rollers fixed to the frame
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which carried the movable plate slide in the aforementioned guide slots.
Since the guide notches made in each of the plates are similar both in their shape and in their intended use, only one of the notches will be described, the index a being applied to the figures of reference for the components corresponding to the notch of the plate 3a.
A notch 12 is made in the vicinity of the lower and anterior part of the plate 3 (see FIG. 1). : the lower part of this notch is vertical or approximately vertical, while its upper part is slightly inclined towards the barrier.
A member 13 is fixed to the plate 3 (see figure 4). This member is also provided with an opening of the same circumference as the notch 12, thus forming a sufficiently large bearing surface for the sliding roller. inside the notch 12, at the rear part of the plate and in the vicinity of its end, there is a second guide notch indicated at 14, the lower part of this notch is arranged parallel to the lower part of notch 12. the posterior part of notch 14 slopes backwards and - @ is almost horizontal. The two notches form obtuse angles.
The angle formed by the lower notch 12 being greater than the angle formed by the notch 14.
'A guide path 15 is fixed to the outer part of the plate 3 in the vicinity of the notch or the opening 14, this guide path being mimi of an opening of the same contour as the opening 14, ( see figure 3) and thus provides a sufficient bearing surface * 'for the roller which moves in the notch 14.
A kind of bearing 16 is attached to the end
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
lower part of the member which supports the movable plate (see figure 4). In this bearing is mounted a short shaft or bolt 17 which constitutes a support for a roller 18 provided with an edge 19 at its inner end. This edge bears against the inner face of the plate 3 and serves to retain the roller in the guide notch. The bearing 16 may be provided with a base to which is fixed a damping pad 20 of rubber or similar material intended to function in combination with another buffer 21 (see figure 3) attached to the lower surface of the bearing. a support 22 attached to the side wall of the organ 3.
This support and the members which act with it as well as the buffer 20 form a stop intended to prevent the movable plate from being tilted too far back as well as to prevent stresses from being exerted on the axes of the above rollers. mentioned and the elements acting with these rollers as well as on the upper rollers and their axes The upper roller
23 is also provided with a flange 24 This roller is mounted on a shaft 25 supported in a bearing 26 fixed to part 9 of the support of the mobile plate.
All the rollers are preferably mounted in an adjustable manner to ensure sufficient support between these rollers and the fixed frame, in order to avoid any lateral movement of the frame which carries the movable plate and more particularly of its lower part 9.
To prevent the frame and the tray it supports from being pulled back violently by exerting excessive forces on the members, a spring unwinder of any known shape is preferably used. The unwinder box is indicated at 27 and its strip at 28. This strip extends towards the rear and is fixed to the frame of the movable plate in any known manner, for example by a bolt at @.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
eyelet 29, the unwinder box 27 is fixed to one side of a heavy support or an inverted column 30 rigidly attached to the underside of the top plate 2 of the main frame of the machine.
The lower end of the member 30 forms a fork (see FIG. 3). An angled lever is mounted on a shaft 31 placed in the lower end of the support. the inner arm 32 of this lever is also forked and in its outer end is mounted, so as to be able to pivot, a transverse rod 33 which forms a support for a block 34 which is placed between the two parts of the fork of the arm. The block and the transverse rod 33 (see FIG. 1) are provided with openings placed in direct alignment and through which the upper end of a hinge rod 35 passes.
This end has a diameter more: Smaller than the rest of the rod, so as to be able to penetrate into the notches of the parts 33 and 34, A handle 36 is fixed to the upper part of the rod 35, This part is located above block 34 and serves to rotate the rod to screw its threaded lower end into or to unscrew block 37. The block 37 is mounted, at its lower end, so as to be able to pivot on a transverse shaft 38 supported by the arms of a support 39 fixed to the lower end of the frame which carries the movable plate. The members 35 and 37 in fact form a rod or one of the elements of an articulation, the other element of this articulation being constituted by an arm 32.
The upper arm 40 of the crank lever is forked.
(see more particularly Figure 3), a rod or a transverse shaft 41 being placed in this forked part. This shaft forms a support for the upper ends of a pair of rods 42, 42a, the lower ends of these rods being fixed to a transverse shaft 43 mounted in the arms 44, 44a, which extend towards
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
inside from a pedal 45 (see figure 4) .These arms are rigidly attached to the front end of a pair of bars 46, 46a which extend towards the rear of the press and s' pressing on a cross bar or shaft 47. This shaft is supported by the downwardly extending ears 48, 48a.
These ears, in the example shown, have been cast together with the member 1 which constitutes the base of the press.
The bars 46 46, the arms 44, 44a and the pedal 45 form a pedal lever which, when the operator depresses the pedal, pulls the articulation rods.
42 42a downwards, causes the lever driven around its support 31 to turn and tends to put in its vertical position the articulation formed by the member 31 and the members 35 and 37.
The pivoting latch 49 is carried by the pedal lever and, when you fully depress your pedal, the curved part of this latch engages the fixed part of the base 1.
A buffer 50 carried on a support 51 fixed to the base 1 is in direct alignment with a transverse part 52 which forms a body with the pedal and which serves to prevent the operators from shocks when: the pedal is fully depressed.
In order ± to produce the upward movement of the adder which carries the movable plate and in order to move the rollers upward in their guide notches, springs have been provided between the fixed part of the frame of the machine and the lower part 9 of the frame of the movable plate which can oscillate and tumble Dasn the case shown, there are two springs 53 and 53a The springs can be attached to the. fixed frame of the machine and to the frame which carries the movable plate of any suitable material.
There is shown in the drawings a hook or a
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
eyelet 54 rigidly fixed to the member 2 of the frame in which engages a similar member 55, the lower part of which is threaded and is screwed into a block 56 fixed to the upper part of the spring. the lower part of the re-spring carries a similar block in which is woven a rod 57 which extends upward from a block 58 (is connected, so as to be able to pivot, to a support 59 attached to the lower part 9 of the frame 8 which carries the plate.
A work table 60 is fixed to the upper member 2 of the frame.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
Assuming that the components are in the position shown in solid lines in Figure 1, the operator can pull the frame 8 which carries the movable plate with its plate 7 forward by means of the handle 11 and put it in. the position shown in dotted lines in the same figure; the same operation can be carried out by pressing the pedal 45. When the movable plate is brought into the position shown in dotted lines, the rollers 18 and 23 and 18a and 23a occupy the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 1. In d ' other words, they will emerge from the rearwardly inclined parts of the guide notches and will be in direct alignment with the parts of these notches disposed vertically.
When the lever 45 is continued to be pressed, the arms 32 of the elbow lever and the rod 35 will be brought into the position shown in figure 2, the rods 42 and 42a pulling the upper arm of the elbow lever downwards. force the rod 35 to descend, which produces a pull, down on the frame which carries the movable plate and which causes this plate to descend vertically on the fixed plate 6 of the machine.
The latch 49, when the pedal is moved to the

stud adorn at the bottom, will engage in the fixed member of element 1 of the frame, and the press will thus be maintained in its closed position. This latch can be easily released by pressing lightly on its front end and the springs 53, 53a will tend to raise the frame which carries the movable plate and this plate and, as the rollers move upwards in their sides: bail - The guide, the frame will first be moved upwards to the position shown in the same figure in solid lines.
The unwinder 27 will prevent the movable plate from tilting back too quickly and thus exerting harmful forces on the parts of the machine. In addition, the action of the springs of the unwinder will facilitate to a certain point the forward movement of the frame which carries the mobile tray.
It will be noted that when the movable plate is in its position at the rear of the machine, the springs are not tensioned and that consequently a very small force is sufficient to move the movable plate forward towards the position shown in dotted lines, Moreover the connection rods are arranged in such a way that a very strong pressure can be exerted on the movable plate through its frame, ae which makes the press effective both for the work at low and high pressure. Indeed, the pressure can be modified by varying the effective length of the rod 35, by means of the part 36.
The fact of constructing the frame of the machine in steel blades provides at the same time a great lightness and a great rigidity. Similarly by constructing the frame 8 which carries the movable plate in the same material it is made light and at the same time capable apply any pressure that may be necessary to make the

extremely powerful press. the frame which carries the movable tray constructed in this manner is flexible enough to allow the tray to tilt slightly, for example, when a thick piece is under one end of the. plate and a light piece under another end, the plate always returning to its upright position when the pressure is no longer exerted.
In other words, the steel blades of which the frame which carries the movable plate is constructed can be bent up to the elastic limit of the metal and always return to the normal position.
It should further be noted that the rollers arranged on the opposite sides of the frame are placed at a considerable distance from each other so that there is no longer or almost no torsion action on the arde. Furthermore, there is no There is no fixed support between the main frame and the movable platen frame, which provides considerable nozzle, particularly in relation to constructions which employ an arm or lever pivoting around a shaft.
