Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

     L'installation comporte un extracteur 1 dont la chambre de chauffe est constituée par des tubes verticaux

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Celui-ci

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 for: DEVICE FOR EXTRACTING FAT AT LOW TEMPERATURE.

   It is known that the extraction of fats contained in bodies of plant and animal origin such as oil seeds, skins, tannery waste, bones, wools, is generally carried out by means of any solvent in suitable devices, to atmospheric pressure or at a pressure greater than this.

  This operation must be done at a fairly high temperature and has the following various disadvantages:
1 / high loss of solvent, which can reach 0.8 to 1.2%,
2 / risk of fire and explosion resulting from

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the high temperature to which the material to be extracted is brought and which often causes self-ignition,
S / deterioration of certain animal materials such as skin, bones, and wool as a result of the high temperature at which the extraction takes place,
4 / loss of yield as a result of the reduction to powder of these materials resulting from this high temperature,
5 / high steam consumption,
6 / costly maintenance of devices requiring more or less long stops.

     In order to avoid some of these drawbacks, it has been proposed to carry out the extraction under a partial vacuum, which makes it possible to lower the temperature necessary for the operation. make the devices which have been envisaged for this purpose have led to extremely complex and costly installations; more the? The results obtained were unsatisfactory, the extraction being incomplete and the loss of solvent being about three times greater than that which results from the ordinary extraction process, at atmospheric pressure.

   The present invention, on the contrary, relates to a device allowing the extraction to be carried out under excellent conditions at low pressure and consequently at low temperature, by means of a relatively simple apparatus, most of which organs are at the same level and which is therefore easy to monitor.

   An embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the attached figure.

     The installation comprises an extractor 1 whose heating chamber is formed by vertical tubes

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

2 crimped between two plates 3 and 3 '. The tubes 2 are heated externally by live steam, arriving through the pipe 4, the condensed water being discharged, through the pipe 5 and the pipe 6 in the traps 7 and 7 '.

   Above the heating chamber, in the extractor 1, are placed two superimposed perforated bottoms 8 and 9, the second being covered with a cloth and intended to retain the powders and dust which would clog the tubes 2. . A safety valve is shown in
58.

   The extraction further comprises a loading mouth 10, an unloading mouth 11, a live steam inlet 12 and an air inlet 13. The solvent initially contained in the container 14 enters the extractor.
1 by the tubing 15 after passing through the tubular heater 16. To maintain the constant level in the receptacle 14 and protect the solvent from any carburization, the lower part of the receptacle 14 is connected by a duct 17 provided with '' a tap 18 with a constant level tank 19 filled with water and having an overflow 20. The solvent enters the tubes of the heater
16 which are heated externally by live steam admitted at 21. The condensation water is discharged by the valve 22 and the automatic drain 23.

   The upper part of the extractor 1 is connected by pipe 24 provided with a tap 25 with a refrigerant 26 formed of two plates 27 and 27 'between which the tubes 28 are crimped. The cold water arrives at 29, circulates around the tubes 28 and comes out through the overflow 30.

   In addition, the heating chamber of the extractor 1 is connected by the pipe 31, serving for the extraction of air, and the / pipe 32 with the refrigerant 26. The latter

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 is put in communication by the pipe 33 provided with a valve 34 with a vacuum pump 35, forcing the air into a washer 36.

   The condensed solvent which accumulates in the lower part of the refrigerant 26 is sucked in at 37 by the plunger pump 38, provided with a spring-loaded discharge valve 39 and a damper 40. This pump delivers the solvent. through line 59 into container 14.

   The solvent which, in the extractor, has taken on the fat, goes through the pipe 41 into the still 42 placed at a level below that of the ground.

   This still comprises at its lower part a tube bundle 43 disposed between two plates 44, 44 '. In 45 it receives cold water which comes out in 46, and in 47 live steam. The water overflow is shown at 48. In addition, two pipes 49 and 50 are immersed in this distiller, the second serving as a steam bubbler and the first as a pipe for discharging fatty substances. A pipe 51 leads, during the distillation, the solvent vapors into the condenser 26. The still is completed by a live vapor inlet pipe 52 and by an air release pipe 53.

   Each of the traps 7 and 7 'is connected by a pipe provided with a valve 54 and 54' to the upper part of the condenser; the tube which connects each of them to the pipe 6 is provided with a valve 55, 55 '; a pipe 56, 56 'allows the arrival of live steam while the water is expelled from the lower part by 57.57'.

   The operation is as follows: the material to be treated is introduced through the throat 10 into the extractor 1. The first step is to open the taps 25 and 34 so

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 to evacuate by means of the vacuum pump 35 the air contained in the condenser 26 and in the extractor 1. The tap 15 is then opened and the solvent which has been properly heated by passing through the tubes is introduced into the extractor. 16. The solvent comes to a boil in the tubes of the heating chamber which are heated externally by the steam admitted at 4. In order to avoid air pockets which can reduce the heating surface of the tubes, we makes the chamber 2 communicate with the refrigerant 26 via the pipe 31 and the pipe 32.

   Air is sucked in together with a small amount of steam and boiling occurs uniformly in all the tubes of chamber 2. The water which condenses in this chamber is discharged through line 6 alternately in the traps 7 and 7 ', each of these devices being as soon as it is filled, isolated and replaced by the other by the operation of the valves 55 and 55'. The water which fills the trap is discharged through 57 or 57 'by means of a steam jet introduced through 56 or 56'. When one of the traps is thus emptied of water or closes the valve 57 or 57 'and the valve 54 or 54' is opened so that the steam remaining in the trap is sucked. The trap is thus evacuated and ready to receive a new charge of water.

   As soon as the distillation of the solvent has started, a rise in temperature occurs which is detected by a thermometer located at the top of the ex - tractor. The vacuum pump 35 is then stopped and the vacuum is, during the remainder of the operation, only maintained by means of the refrigerant 26, the pump 35 being restarted only when the vacuum tends to drop: in this case the pump 35 delivers the air, which may possibly

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 be carburized, in the washer 36 which retains the solvent.

   After a few hours of operation, the tap 15 is closed, the volume of the solution in the extractor is reduced as far as possible by evaporation of the solvent and the concentrated solution is evacuated through the pipe 41, provided with 'a tap 41', in the distiller 42 which has been put under vacuum beforehand. For this purpose, the live steam inlet 48 and the tap 53 were opened.

  The air is expelled and escapes by 53; closes valves 48 and 53 as soon as steam appears. The tap on line 45 is then opened to allow the
 EMI6.1
 the cold water which cools the tubes 43 rapidly on the outside and condenses the steam in the still 42: the vacuum is thus established in a few moments.

   When the first concentrated solution has passed from the extractor 1 into the still 42, the valve 41 'is closed and the solvent is re-admitted into the extractor so as to continue the operation under the same conditions.

   The refrigeration water from the tube bundle 43 is then discharged through 46; opens the two taps in line 51 as well as the steam inlet of the bubbler 50. The steam condenses in the condenser 26, or it mixes with the steam coming from the extractor 1.

  The water and the solvent are extracted: from the refrigerant by the pump 38 and delivered through the pipe 59 into the receptacle 14 where their separation takes place automatically and the solvent returns to the circuit.
 EMI6.2

  The fatty substances are, after their total exhaustion by bubbling, driven back into the dip tube 49 by the steam sent by the tap 52 and the steam from the bubbler 50. Thanks to the cooling of the tube bundle 43 by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the water arriving from the pipe 45, the distiller 42 is again placed under vacuum to successively receive the second concentrated solution, then the third solution.

   When the last solution has passed from extractor 1 into still 42, valve 41 'is left open and valve 25 is closed, thus separating extractor 1e from refrigerant. One opens / tap 12 to send steam directly into the extractor so as to expel the solvent with which the raw material is impregnated. The vapors loaded with solvent pass through 41, 42 and 51 to condense in the condenser 26. The exhaustion is terminated when the level of the solvent remains unchanged in the container 14. The valves 12 and 41 'are then closed. and the valve 13 is opened to allow the penetration of air into the extractor.

   The dry treated material is extracted through the lower throat 11.

   We see that only two devices, the condenser and the extractor, are kept under vacuum. The result is that the number of possible leaks is very limited and consequently the solvent can only be slightly carburized.
