" Perfectionnements.' apportés aux boussoles d'inclinaison ".
Monsieur BLANCHET (Georges) @ 6, Rue Cavalatti, à PARIS (Seine) France.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
sur les fig. 1 à 3, on a recours, pour constituer cette boussole : à un système magnétique, constitué par exemple par deux barreaux aimantés a parallèles entre eux et rendus, solidaires l'un de l'autre par deux bras d'un croisillon b dont les deux autres bras sont munis, de part et d'autre desdits barreaux, de deux pointes ± par l'intermédiaire desquelles le système magnétique oscillera, dans un plan- vertical, autour d'un axe horizontal passant par le centre de gravité de l'ensemble magnétique, y compris une aiguil- le indicatrice d parallèle aux barreaux et reliée solidai- rement à ceux-ci ;
à un support e tel, pour ledit ensemble, qu'y soient fixés, d'une part, deux petites cuvettes f p ropres à.rece- voir respectivement les pointes ± et, d'autre part, un lim- be gradué g devant lequel se déplacera l'aiguille indicatri- ce d,que lesdits limbe gradué et tige indicatrice soient visibles l'extérieur du support, que ce support permette au système magnétique d*y osciller librement et qu'il soit relié, vers sa partie .supérieure, vers la partie supérieu- re d'une sorte de boîte h dont il va être parlé, par l'in- termédiaire d'un joint universel, par exemple à cardan ou analogue, tel, par exemple, que celui dont on voit'les dif- férents organes sur les fig. 1 à 3 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
(fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Comme il va de soi, et comme il ressort d'ail- leurs déjà de ce qui précède, l'invention ne se limite au- cunement à ceux de ses modes d'application, non plus qu'à ceux des modes de réalisation de ses diverses parties, ayant plus spécialement été indiqués; elle en embrasse, au con- traire, toutes les variantes, notamment: @ celles où le moyen,par l'intermédiaire duquel le sys- tème magnétique peut osciller,serait autre que celui indiqué; celles où ledit système magnétique serait également autre que celui indiqué;
celles où, quoique moins recommandable, l'appareil ne contiendrait pas le liquide ci-dessus, auquel cas la botte h de la disposition montrée sur les fig. 1 à 3 n'au- rait d'autre raison d'être que de supporter le joint à car- dan-et le système optique grosissant i et pourrait, par suite, être établie autrement, comme un simple support,de mène d'ailleurs que la boîte e de la disposition montrée sur les fig. 4 à 6, qui pourrait, si on désire, conserver la forme qu'on a donnée au support e de la première dis- position, étant entendu que, quelle que soit la disposition adoptée, la partie de l'appareil, suspendue au Joint à car- dan, devra être assez lourde, maintenant que ledit appareil est supposé privé dudit liquide, pour bien conserver sa verticalité;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
de suspension de l'appareil, auquel cas le limbe gradué de- vrait conserver une position de repos immuable, étant alors suspendu librement, suffisamment lesté, au corps de l'appa- reil suivant un axe passant par l'axe d'oscillation du sys- tème magnétique, par exemple par l'intermédiaire d'un joint universel analogue au précédent, lequel appareil, contenant ou non le susdit liquide, serait alors porté et manoeuvré comme dit, lors dés observations, par l'opérateur par un moyen approprié quelconque, par exemple par l'intermédiaire d'un ou de plusieura poignées fixées audit corps, voire même simplement. en saisissant ledit corps directement;

"Improvements. ' brought to tilt compasses ".
Mr. BLANCHET (Georges) @ 6, Rue Cavalatti, in PARIS (Seine) France.
The invention relates to inclination compasses.
Its purpose is, above all, to make these devices more practical than hitherto, whatever the circumstances and the places where one may need to use such devices.
It consists, mainly, in providing the apparatus of the kind in question with means such, on the one hand, that said apparatus can be portable and supported in the air. By the observer, in all the positions which they should. occupy during an observation and, on the other hand, that the support of the magnetic system is and remains vertical.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which can be used
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
preferably at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular in another arrangement consisting in establishing the magnetic system of the apparatus of the kind in question in a receptacle containing a suitable liquid to allow making said system aperiodic.
It relates more particularly to certain modes of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said arrangements; and it also relates more particularly, and this as new industrial products, to devices of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, to the special elements and tools specific to their establishment, as well as to installations, fixed or mobile, using similar devices.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of these drawings. show, respectively in vertical section according to 1-1 fig. 3, in partial vertical section according to 2-2 fig. 3 and in partial horizontal section according to 3-3 fig. 1, an inclination compass established in accordance with the invention.
The: Figs 4, 5 and 6 show ,, respectively in vertical section along 4-4 fig. 6, in partial vertical section according to 5-5 fig. 6 and in partial plan, another inclination compass established in accordance with the invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to those of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its. various parties, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing to establish a compass of inclination, the procedure is as follows, or analogously.
According to the embodiment shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in fig. 1 to 3, in order to constitute this compass, we have recourse to: a magnetic system, constituted for example by two bar magnets a parallel to each other and made, integral with each other by two arms of a spider b whose two other arms are provided, on either side of said bars, with two points ± through which the magnetic system will oscillate, in a vertical plane, around a horizontal axis passing through the center of gravity of the magnetic assembly, including an indicator needle d parallel to the bars and solidly connected to them;
to a support e such, for said assembly, that there are fixed, on the one hand, two small cuvettes suitable for receiving respectively the points ± and, on the other hand, a graduated limb g in front of which the indicator needle will move, that said graduated blade and indicator rod are visible outside the support, that this support allows the magnetic system to oscillate freely therein and that it is connected, towards its upper part, towards the upper part of a kind of box h which will be discussed, by means of a universal joint, for example cardan joint or the like, such, for example, as that of which we see 'the Different organs in fig. 1 to 3;
and to said boot h, for example parallelepiped, suitable for receiving the support ē suspended therein as we have just said and free to oscillate therein, box made watertight so that it can contain a clean liquid itself in making the magnetic system aperiodic, and possibly having transparent side walls, at least that which is opposite the graduation of the limbus and which is advantageously provided with a magnifying optical system i, of appropriate dimensions, established opposite said limbus to read its graduation more easily, which box is
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
provides, towards its upper part, with means suitable for enabling one to be able, during an observation, to carry it with the hands, having in front of oneself the graduation of the limbus, which means are constituted, for example ,
by two handles 1 fixed to the box h in the plane in which the magnetic bars oscillate.
As a result, we have a tilting compass - sensitive and precise if the whole is judiciously established, especially if the points ± and the cups f have their parts in contact made of agate, and if the suspension at @@@ is well adjusted - that one can use in all the circumstances where one has to consult an ordinary tilting compass, which one can take with one and including an observer ( traveler, explorer, scientist, etc.) can be used in any place and at any time, on foot or not, or by occupying any vehicle, for example an aerial locomotion machine also any, balloon or plane, when it wants realize the magnetic inclination of the place where it is located.
For this, it is sufficient for the operator to grasp the device with both hands by the handles j, arranging so that the graduation of the limbus is on his side, to lift said device, so that the system magnifying optic is at the level of its eye, and to turn on itself until, with some trial and error, the magnetic system comes to rest in the magnetic plane.
And we understand that, if we have at our disposal a map on which is the place where we operate and on which are traced lines of equal inclination, said "inclines", and 'if the graduated limbus is divided into degrees corresponding to those of said lines, we are on the isocline line, the degree of which is the same as that indicated by the magnetic system; the very approximate indication of the place where one finds oneself being obtained by searching, by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
usual means, for example the longitude of the place where the operation was carried out, the point of intersection of the line of longitude with the isocline line found corresponding to the place sought.
According to the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 to 6, the 'box h of the previous arrangement has been removed and the part e of this same arrangement replaced, a part serving as a support for the magnetic system and the graduated limb by a part e, arranged so such that, while being assigned to the same use, that is to say supporting said magnetic system and graduated limb, and having the same mode of suspension with universal joint, on the one hand, it constitutes a kind of waterproof box
EMI5.1
suitable to contain, as represented and as olly is supposed aon in liquid allowing to make aperiodic posed con enl '.
e liquid allowing said magnetic system to be aperiodic, and that, on the other hand, the axes k of the gimbal not directly supporting the box: 2 respectively carry two handles 1 in which said axes are fixed or journalled on which the rest of the car - dan can move; the wall at least of the box e, which is located opposite the graduation of the limbus being transparent and being capable of being provided with a magnifying optical system established in front of said limbus.
So that, if the dimensions of the box e are sufficient to allow the free oscillations of the magnetic system, there is a tilting compass which is used in the same way as the previous one, by grasping it by the handle j , and which has the advantage, over the latter, in particular of being less heavy and less bulky and of being able to be manufactured in a simpler manner, hence more economical. In the arrangement which has just been described - as well as for the arrangement shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 -, box h (fig. 1 to 3) or e.
(fig. 4 to 6) or parallelepiped, which box can, as actually shown in fig. 5, have, in.section per-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
pendicular to the plane of oscillation of the magnetic system, substantially the longitudinal axial section of an hourglass, that is to say with corresponding side walls each forming a sort of re-entrant V, the whole so that said magnetic system, in its extreme positions of oscillation, come into the vicinity of these walls, without touching them.
The apparatus is thus made even less heavy than before.
As goes without saying, and as is already apparent from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of the invention. its various parts, having been more especially indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants, in particular: @ those where the means, by means of which the magnetic system can oscillate, would be other than that indicated; those where said magnetic system would also be other than that indicated;
those where, although less advisable, the apparatus would not contain the above liquid, in which case the boot h of the arrangement shown in figs. 1 to 3 would have no other reason for being than to support the joint to cardan-and the magnifying optical system i and could, consequently, be established otherwise, as a simple support, of leads of elsewhere than box e of the arrangement shown in figs. 4 to 6, which could, if desired, retain the form given to the support e of the first arrangement, it being understood that, whatever arrangement adopted, the part of the apparatus, suspended from the Joint on board, must be heavy enough, now that said apparatus is supposed to be deprived of said liquid, in order to maintain its verticality;
those where, in the case of the arrangement shown in FIGS. 4 to 6, we would remove the universal joint
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
suspension of the apparatus, in which case the graduated limb should maintain an immutable rest position, being then suspended freely, sufficiently ballasted, from the body of the apparatus along an axis passing through the axis of oscillation of the apparatus. magnetic system, for example by means of a universal joint analogous to the preceding one, which apparatus, containing or not the aforesaid liquid, would then be carried and operated as said, during observations, by the operator by an appropriate means any, for example by means of one or more handles fixed to said body, or even simply. by gripping said body directly;
those in which the oscillatory movement of the needle d would be amplified by any suitable means, for example by fixing said needle to a toothed wheel journaled at an appropriate fixed point of the apparatus and meshing with a toothed sector, of radius greater than that of said wheel, made integral with the magnetic system and whose axis is on the axis. oscillation of said system; and those where the compensation system generally adopted for ordinary tilt compasses would be applied to the compasses described above.
