<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Process for the manufacture of powder intended to prepare cold glue".
The puores ae soluble in rroia. known to date and obtained with sawdust, with starch or with casein, show a very marked alkaline reaction / consequently color the wood to which they are applied. On the other hand, cold-soluble animal glues are very acidic, very impoverished by the acids used as liquefying agents, very fluid and considerably lose their agglomerating and adhesive properties.
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a glue powder soluble in cold water, suitable both for woodworking and for papermaking, and which is characterized by a neutral reaction. This powder consists of a dry mixture of glue
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
@ finely pulverized animal and an agent, liquefying for colloids, also in the form of dry powder.
As liquefying agent, it is possible to envisage for example sulfonates, in particular sodium [alpha] - naphthosulfonate, calcium nitrate, sodium salicylate, sodium chloride,. calcium chloride, etc.
The mixture consisting of the glue, animal and the liquefying agent is stirred with cold water in the proportion of 1: 1.5, up to 1: 2 and gives, in ten or fifteen minutes, a solution of glue capable of being spread and having a sufficiently thick consistency. '
Said solution is very agglomerating and adheres quickly, these qualities can be further increased when tanning or drying agents are added to this solution, or products which, once spread with the liquefying agent, solidify rapidly by combining with the latter. . These products are, for example, magnesium carbonate, alum, aluminum sulphate, aldehydes, addition and substitution products of these substances, siccatives such as manganese borate.
To avoid the premature transition to the gel state, that is to say too rapid solidification, one can add for example to the mixture a colloid such as casein or blood albumin, intimately distributed in the mixture and which swells when the glue is dissolved.
When preparing an adhesive for
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
papermaking, it is preferable to add casein and choose an agent which simultaneously liquefies animal glue and casein.
Sodium [alpha] - naphthosulphonate is particularly suitable for achieving this result *
The quantity of liquefying agent to be used depends on the quality of the adhesive and can easily be determined by testing.
Example 1.-
70 grams of finely powdered animal glue mixed with 20 grams of sodium [alpha] - naphthosulphonate, 10 grams of finely ground quartz powder and stirred in 200 grams of cold water.
Example 2.-
20grams of calcium nitrate, 10grams of magnesium carbonate and 70grams of finely pulverized animal glue are mixed with 200grams of cold water.
Example 3.-
20 grams of sodium salicylate, 10 grams of casein and 70 grams of finely pulverized animal glue are mixed with 200 grams of cold water.
Example 4.-
20 grams of sodium [alpha] - naphthosulphonate, 10 grams of casein and 70 grams of finely powdered animal glue are mixed with 200 grams of cold water.
