re de gaz Inerte, réducteur ou carburait (lignes 3 à 5 page 4, du brevet principal);
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

re of inert, reducing or carburized gas (lines 3 to 5 page 4, of the main patent);
For this purpose, it suffices to r @@ dre the hermetic mirror, by introducing the wire through a cable gland, while at its exit it is passed through a made pipe, the tightness of which can even be ensured by the quench bath contained in tank 7.
The process described above can be used for the quenching of thin steel bands or ribbons, intended for the manufacture of spiral springs for watchmaking, the invention ensuring their quenching without danger of oxidation or corrosion. any other alteration of their surface characteristics.
According to another embodiment of the invention, it is possible to heat wire or metal rods immediately before winding them to make them the springs, and during the winding itself. In this manufacture, as it is now carried out, using special spring steels, particularly when the latter are formed by a rod of small or medium dimensions, such as certain suspension springs at the glycerin for cars or well known shock absorbers, to be calculated for considerable forces, cracks or folds very often occur during the winding,
which puts the spring out of order. - As it is not possible to carry out a rapid enough heating, and at a sufficient temperature so that the winding of the spring is appreciably facilitated, one wound until now the cold spring, paying special attention to it.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a device for hot winding of the springs, according to the invention, and very easily providing suitable and adjustable heating until the spring is actually about to be wound.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
so that the winding is carried out on a heated wire, rod or strip.
F is for example a tigp to be wound into a helix; 13 and
13 are rollers directing this rod along a focal axis of a mirror s in the form of an elliptical cylinder, the other focal axis of which is occupied by the electrical resistance R.
The rod F being heated during this journey to any desired suitable temperature is then guided by means of refractory rollers 11, 12 and 12 ', and is wound according to the desired pitch on the mandrel H.
It is obvious that the present hot winding process has the advantage of giving perfectly annealed springs, ready for any quenching process, and of simplifying the winding operations since any deformation - such as increases in diameter. and the pitch - which can occur during cold winding, when the spring is removed from the mandrel, is reduced to a minimum - or driven absolutely avoided.
Fig. 5 relates in general to a heating process. by reflection of metallic wires to be drawn, and in particular in the operations of heating and drawing of thin filaments for electric lamps during their manufacture
The cnauffage of a thread F, unwinding from a drum 21 and passing over a pulley 22, is carried out in an oven S with an elliptical director, by passing the thread along one of its focal axes while the other axis is occupied by a suitable electric resistance, the electric current being brought through the terminals 8. The wire is then passed through a die T and over a pulley 23, in order to wind it on a drum 24 or other similar member.
Thanks to its simplicity and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
to make it easier to comply with any requirement, the above procedure can be used to anneal the wire immediately on leaving the die, so as to carry out a cycle that is as rapid and followed as possible by successive operations.
The essential characteristic of the process described above consists in that it is possible to heat the wire to any suitable temperature, easily and instantly adjustable, and to carry out all the heating and drawing operations inside the wire. 'a closed chamber, in a vacuum or in the presence of any desired atmosphere of inert gases, reducing or fuels, with the aim of maintaining constant or of appropriately modifying the surface characteristics of the wire, the rod, or other anal piece.
An embodiment of an apparatus serving to carry out the treatment of the wire, rod or other similar part in any particular atmosphere is shown senémaituement in FIGS. 6 and 7 of the accompanying drawings.
The other parts of the elliptical mirror oven being substantially the same as in the previous constructions, the apparatus according to this latter form of application comprises cable glands 31, 31 suitably fixed on the bases 32 closing the oven at its ends, so as to guide the wire F along one of the focal axes. Tubings 33, 33 'are provided on the walls of the furnace, for the purpose of bringing in the gases and removing them.
It is understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings and forming the subject of the foregoing description: on the contrary, it can be produced using any apparatus

affecting similar characteristics and suitable for the realization of the stated principles.
