  Moyens perfectionnés pour faciliter l'ouverture d'enveloppes.
 EMI1.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Advanced means to facilitate the opening of envelopes.
 EMI1.1
 *. *. **. *. **. **. '# Australian patent application in her favor of September 17, 1926.

   The present invention relates to improvements made to envelopes with the aim of being able to open them easily and quickly without fear of encountering or damaging their contents. The invention is such that the cost price of the envelopes is increased only to an extremely small extent and that the improvements strongly counterbalance this expense.

   For carrying out the invention, a thread or cord of cotton, silk or other similar material, or of metal, having an appropriate strength is used, and this thread is placed along one or more folds of the material forming the casing, for example along the top and / or the bottom of the casing and / or one or both sides thereof. This wire or cord is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 fixed inside the envelope by means of gum, glue, or other adhesive material, or strips of paper or other material, in two or more places or along its entire length, depending on a variant , the paper can be "split" and the thread can be placed there during manufacture.

   Perforations or notches or an indentation are made transversely at one or both corners of the casing to which the end or ends of the wire are attached, to facilitate tearing of the corner and the opening of the envelope along the edge (s) or. the wire or cord is attached.

   The yarn can be put in place during papermaking, as previously mentioned, or during casing manufacture.

   In order for the invention to be better understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows an open envelope to which the invention has been applied.

   Fig. 2 shows the closed envelope.

   Fig. 3 shows a variant.

   Figs. 4 and 5 show two further variations, parts of the casing only being shown.

   Fig. 6 shows the invention applied in another way.

   Fig. 7 is a detail view in section on a larger scale.

   Along one or more of the folds A of the material forming the casing B, for example along the upper edge

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and / or from the lower edge of the envelope and / or the sides thereof, there is a thread or cord C of cotton, silk or other similar material, or of metal, in FIGS. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7, the wire or cord C is placed along the upper fold where the tab D is formed. In fig. 3, the wire C is placed along the four folds A, E, F, G, that is, inside the casing, along both sides and along the top and bottom edges . It should be understood that the wire or cord C may be placed along the upper edge and / or the lower edge and / or along either or both sides, and not necessarily in the manner shown. in this figure.

   The wire or cord C is fixed inside the casing by means of gum, glue or other adhesive material which is applied by saturating the wire or cord C with this material before placing it on the envelope B or, when this wire or cord C is in place, by coating the wire and the fold of the envelope by means of a brush or in some other way. On the other hand, the wire or cord C can be fixed in place by means of strips H of adhesive paper or other material, applied over the entire length of the wire, as in fig. 4, or in two or more places as in fig. 5. According to a variant shown in FIG. 6, the paper may be "slit" and the thread may be placed therein during manufacture.

   The wires or cords C can be cut into pieces of suitable lengths and put on the casing or a continuous wire can be stretched along the fold and cut to the desired length when it has been secured in place. .

   The wire or cord C may be placed during papermaking or during the manufacture of the envelope.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The wire or cord C has sufficient strength to withstand the force to which it is subjected when the envelope is opened by tearing it.

   Perforations or notches J are made across one or more corners K of the envelopes, to which the end or ends of the wire or cord are attached; a line can also be marked or printed across the corner and if desired the words "to tear off here" or other suitable words can be printed at the location of these corners K.

   In some cases we can leave the corners of the envelope smooth, that is to say without perforations or notches.

   The envelope to which the invention is applied can belong to any known category, for example to that of opaque or "open" or "window" envelopes and can have any format, for example that of envelopes. - envelopes of letters or that for pro-patria paper etc.

   In order to open an envelope made in accordance with the present invention, the prepared corner K is torn and, in doing so, the tear follows the perforations or the notches J until reaching the wire or cord C; this is held between the thumb and forefinger and a traction is exerted which tears the envelope along its edge or edges.
