c:E'ttUC:E:l7k ET APPAREIL POUR Lü DISTILLATION DU ctUTT.JROl,rn
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
pondante.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

c: ETUC: E: l7k AND APPARATUS FOR THE DISTILLATION OF ctUTT.JROl, rn
The invention relates to improvements in the distillation of tar and the production of pitch and includes a new process for the distillation of tar and production of pitch and an improved apparatus for practicing this process. The invention relates more particularly to the distillation of coal tar and the production of pitch at noodle distillation plants, such as, for example, by-product coking plants.
In the ordinary operation of by-product coking plants, the gases produced by the coking are
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
individual furnaces, via individual upright pipes and goosenecks, to a collecting pipe, common to a battery of furnaces. The gases from the coke ovens, leaving the ovens at a high temperature, are cooled to separate the tar elements therefrom, these elements being separated partly in the collecting pipes or barrels and partly in condensers placed further.
Coal tar produced in by-product coking plants is usually sent to the tar distillation plants where it is distilled to obtain coal tar and pitch distillates which constitute the residue from the distillation.
The present invention makes it possible to distill the tar and produce the pitch directly at the by-product coking plant without having to resort to a separate distillation plant, thereby avoiding transport costs.
According to the present invention, the hot coke oven gases exiting from the individual coke ovens are used for the distillation of tar and for the production of pitch by bringing the tar into intimate contact with these gases as they exit the furnace. coke. By bringing the tar directly into the high temperature coke oven gases, the tar is distilled efficiently, more or less volatile oils are separated from it, and a heavier tar, or brait iui, remains. constitutes the residue of the distillation.
In addition, the fact of injecting the tar into the hot coke oven gases determines the cooling of these gases and the separation with these gases of a greater or lesser quantity of the relatively heavy tar elements, which elements
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are thus added to the pitch constituting the residue of the distillation, The result of this distillation process is to increase the content of the coke oven gases in oil vapors, to carry out a partial purification or to remove the gases from them. removing relatively heavy tar elements, and producing pitch using tar in the coking plant.
In the practice of the invention, the drone to be distilled is supplied in a divided state or pulverized into the hot coke oven gases or is otherwise brought into intimate contact with these gases, so that the gases hot can heat and distill the tar and that these gases will at the same time be cooled by the tar, enriched by the distilled vapors and freed of a more or less large fraction of the relatively heavy tar elements contained in the gases themselves,
According to the invention,
individual coke ovens are fitted with gas exhaust pipes so constructed as to permit the tar to be directly injected or otherwise introduced into a stream of hot gas immediately upon leaving the ovens coke. The exhaust pipe may advantageously be a modified riser pipe, such as that which will be described later, in which the tar is projected in a divided state or sprayed in an upward stream of hot coke oven gas while this gas has substantially its maximum temperature.
The construction of the coke oven and its by-product recovery apparatus may moreover remain unchanged or receive only the modifications which are necessary to deliver tar to the modified exhaust pipe and to remove and collect the pitch. or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
heavy tar, produced by distillation. For example, a modified riser pipe can be substituted for the ordinary riser pipe, leaving the junction of said pipe with the coke oven and that of this pipe with the barrel unchanged. The vapors resulting from the distillation of the tar will in this case be entrained by the coke oven gases and will be condensed and collected in the recovery apparatus.
One of the advantages of the present invention is that it is directly applicable to the present construction of coke ovens and requires only the minimum of modifications to this construction and to the operation, while allowing tar to be distilled. and to produce pitch by using the calories contained in the hot gases leaving the coke ovens and without interfering with the operation of the coke oven or its by-product recovery device,
However, as regards its more general characteristics, the invention is not limited to the application of a modified riser pipe as a replacement for the riser pipe of the present construction, nor is it. limited to its application to the barrel and to the ordinary apparatus for recovering by-products.
The tar distilled according to the invention can be a tar produced in the same coking plant where it is distilled, or can come from another source. It may contain all, or substantially all, of the condensable oils, in the event that the elements of the tar are condensed or collected together, or it may be a relatively heavy tar.
As is usually produced and collected in coking plants, the tar is mixed with a greater or lesser amount of water. This tar can advantageously be dehydrated before being subjected to distillation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
according to the invention It can also advantageously be 'employed in the preheated and fluid state with a view to its injection into the hot gases of a coke oven. the manner in which the tar is brought into direct contact with the hot vapors may vary.
A suitable spray or injection nozzle to which the preheated and fluid tar is delivered under sufficient pressure to determine the spraying or subdivision of the tar, and the resulting intimate contact of said tar with the hot gases, can advantageously be placed in the upper part of the riser pipe modified to bring the tar into intimate contact with the hot gases.
It is possible to place in each of the individual upright pipes either a single tar injector or several, and the flow rate of said injectors as well as the temperature of the tar can be adjusted to ensure a more or less rapid distillation of the tar and the. production of a pitch (or similar product) more or less hard.
The gases which escape from the upper part of a coke oven have a high temperature, for example close to 6000 C., or higher in certain cases. This temperature is high enough so that the effective distillation of the tar can be carried out by means of an intimate and controlled injection of the said tar into the hot gases. Using the gases at approximately the temperature which they possess at the top of the furnace enables their maximum heating and distillation effect to be utilized.
Depending on the intimacy and duration of the contact of the particles of the tar jet with the gases, the temperature of the gases. will lower to a greater or lesser extent, and the tar will in turn be distilled to a corresponding extent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
laying. Efficient distillation can be achieved with a temperature drop of the gases of 100 ° C., for example, in their passage through the tar jet, although a greater temperature drop can be obtained by a more intimate and longer contact This reduction in temperature is advantageous in the sense that it immediately cools the hot gases to a temperature such that they no longer undergo or almost no longer undergo other decpositioning.
The tar will itself be heated by the hot gases and its temperature may increase considerably. However, part of the heat of the gases is used to vaporize liquid elements of the tar without correspondingly raising the temperature of the tar, so that the maximum temperature of the tar and that of the resulting pitch may be considerably lower than that of the tar. gas,
The amount of tar that can be distilled by hot az from a single coke oven is several times that which the coke oven itself is capable of producing, so that only one riser pipe is modified. and employed according to the invention will be able to distill the quantity of tar produced by a considerable number of coke ovens.
As a result, it is possible, using a small number of modified risers, to distill the entire amount of tar produced by a battery of coke ovens. If all the riser pipes of a battery are modified to distill tar by the process according to the invention, the amount of tar distilled will be. many times that which such a battery would be likely to produce.
Therefore, from the operational point of view
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
battery, the present invention makes it possible to use a part of the battery for the distillation of tar while processing of the. ordinary way the gases bypassed from the rest of the battery for the separation of the tar. When several coke oven batteries are suitably arranged, the tar derived from a considerable number of batteries can still be distilled in a single battery by the process according to the invention. Tar which is usually shipped to tar distillation plants can instead be shipped to coking plants and distilled there by an operation which forms part of the coking plant service, modified according to the present invention.
Due to the increase in the oil vapor content of the coke oven gases, an increase resulting from the distillation of the tar, and due to the partial separation of the heavy tar elements from the gases, the separation resulting from By injection of tar, the resulting coke oven gases will have a different composition from those ordinarily obtained in a coke oven in which no distillation of the tar is carried out. When a large amount of tar is distilled in accordance with the present invention, the resulting coke oven gases contain a much larger amount of vapors resulting from this distillation.
In this case, it may be necessary to modify ordinary condensing apparatus to give them sufficient cooling or condensing capacity so that they can separate the oils in a fractional fashion, or otherwise, as desired.
When a battery of coke ovens, for example a battery of sixty ovens, has a sufficient number
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
individual boreholes with exhaust pipes modified according to the present invention for distillation, and when the tar produced by the remainder of the battery is subjected to distillation in these special pipes, the. The vapor content of the gases increases and the condensing apparatus and its mode of action can be modified accordingly, if necessary, to ensure the recovery of the elements of this vapor It suffices to modify a few of the individual risers (e.g. three to six) to allow distillation of the tar produced by the remainder of a battery of sixty furnaces,
for example @
In the practice of the process, the oudron may not be. brought into contact with the hot gases only once, or it can be recirculated through one of the rising distillation pipes to determine a new distillation and the production of a harder pitch.
This new distillation can be carried out by circulating the pitch again through the same riser pipe or through one or more other riser pipes, so that in different riser pipes, we obtain a pitch of the same nature and of same hardness, ie pitches of different natures and hardnesses By adjusting the quantity of tar injected and the preheating temperature of this tar and by redistributing when necessary, it is possible to adjust the hardness of the orai produced and d '' obtain relatively soft or relatively hard pitches as desired.
The invention will be described below in more detail with reference to the appended drawings which show an apparatus established for carrying out the method according to the invention, it being understood, however, that the invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
is not limited to the construction shown

Fig. 2 shows part of a battery of coke ovens, some of which are fitted with modified upright pipes.
Fig. 3 shows a variant of the apparatus of fig.1.
Fig. 4 shows on a larger scale an embodiment of the modified riser pipe.
Fig. 5 is a section on 5-5 (fig. 4).

Fig. 7 shows in section a construction of an injection nozzle.
The invention is capable of being applied more or less generally to different types and constructions of by-product coke ovens such as Semet-Solvay ovens, Koppers ovens, etc. but it will be described below with more particular reference to its application to ovens of the Semet-Solvay type.
@ Fig. 1 shows the application of the invention to a single coke oven, The cake oven is shown schematically at 1 and is provided with the usual duct 2 for the exhaust of cokeo oven gases The rising pipe, indicated at 3 , is connected by its upper end to a pipe 4 leading to a pipe 5, which may be the ordinary barrel. Instead of being constructed in the ordinary way, the riser pipe 3 is widened as indicated at 6 to provide a space around the inner pipe 7 extending upwardly within the enlarged casing thus formed.
In this envelope and above the end of the pipe 7 is a baffle or cone 8 above which is placed in the upper part of
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
the casing 6, or in the pipe 4 surmounted this casing, an injection nozzle 9 connected to a pipe 10 which supplies said nozzle with tar. A pitch exhaust port is provided at the lower part of the casing 6 to allow the pitch to be withdrawn from the space between the pipe 7 and said casing.
The construction and arrangement of the modified riser pipe is such that this pipe can be secured to the flange of the pipe passing through the top wall of the coke oven as shown at 12 and its upper end can be connected. to the pipe leading to the barrel, as indicated in 13. This arrangement is such that the changes which are necessary to be made in the construction of the by-product coke oven to replace the modified riser pipe with the pipe. the amount usually employed in this construction is not very large.
The modified riser construction shown in fig. 4 has a series of doors or openings 14 near its lower end to allow inspection and cleaning and an upper door 15 carrying the baffle or cone 8, the arrangement being such that when the door 15 is opened, la, baffle 8 exits from casing 6. The upright pipe is also provided with overflow holes 16 located some distance from the lower end of the riser pipe construction. The pitch exhaust port 11 located near said end is connected by a pipe 18 to a pitch collection vessel 19.
The gooseneck connection with the barrel is provided with injection nozzles 20 disposed within the gooseneck, and the barrel itself is provided in the present construction with injection nozzles 21. A li - ammoniacal queur can be injected by the nozzles 20 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
21 in the ordinary way. The barrel may be traversed by a stream of ammoniacal liquor, as indicated at 22.
The tar separated in the barrel is led to a suitable tar receptacle (not shown in fig. 1) in which the tar is freed of most of the ammoniacal liquor, the remaining tar containing only a quantity. relatively low water
In fig. 2, part of a coke oven battery is shown at 28, some of the coke ovens being provided with the modified riser construction
3, the others being provided with upright pipes 29 of the ordinary type. The transverse pipe going from the barrel to the refrigerants or condensers is indicated at 30, and the condensers or refrigerants are indicated at 31 and 32
The exhauster sucking the gases out of the installation is indicated in 35.
The tar collected in the barrel and the transverse pipe flows towards a tar collecting tank 23 in which the tar separates from the ammoniacal liquor and this tar is then led to a dehydrator 24 serving to rid the tar of the water which 'it encloses and preheats it for use in the process. The dehydrator can be of any suitable construction. The preheated and dehydrated tar is pumped by a pump 25 which delivers it through the pipe. for supplying tar 10 to the injection nozzles 9.
In fig. 3, the pitch container 19 is provided with a pipe 27 extending from this container to the injection nozzle, a pump 26 being mounted on this pipe to enable the pitch. recirculation of pitch or tar.
Fig. 7 shows a suitable form of injection nozzle This nozzle consists of a box 36 provided with an internal core 37 having notches
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
which constitute helical conduits between said core and box 36, this box further having an injection port 38. The construction is such that the tar is delivered by a swirling movement in the form of a conical jet.
When the tar is preheated and fluid, it can be sent to the nozzle at a suitable pressure, for example three kilograms per square centimeter, and forced through the nozzle so as to be sprayed or injected into the gas stream. warm amount
The operation of the apparatus shown, with a view to the practice of the method according to the invention, is as follows: The hot gases from the coke oven rise in the modified riser pipe, then pass into the ring neck. :::; ne and arrive at the barrel. The hot preheated tar is delivered in controlled amount to the injection nozzle which injects it into the hot gases. The gases are brought into intimate contact with the tar jet which is heated and distilled by the hot gases and the latter are themselves cooled to a certain extent.
The baffle 8 prevents the tar from falling into the coke ovens and this tar is collected in the space outside the pipe 7 and flows through the noise exhaust duct 11. The ac- -, ion of the hot gases on the injected tar particles and on the tar flowing on the surfaces of the distillation device is such that the tar is brought into intimate contact with the hot gases, which has the effect of heating it and '' distill off the oils which it contains, so that a heavy tar or pitch is formed and escapes through the pitch exhaust duct. The distillation can be adjusted as previously defined. written,
for example by preheating the tar in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
more or less before injecting it into the hot gases, by adjusting the quantity or nature of the injected tar, etc.
To understand one way of carrying out the process, we will describe the following example:
A tar was used which had been separated in a Semet-Solvay apparatus. This tar was dehydrated and used in a preheated state, either at 1000 00 or at a slightly higher temperature. 750 to 800 liters of this tar were injected per hour into the hot coke oven gases and a soft pitch of 42 C was obtained, of approximately known melting point as the residue of the distillation. Pitches of higher melting point, for example 55 ° C. and above, were similarly obtained by adjusting the injection.
The gas coming out of the ovens entered. in the pipe rising to about 600 C. and left the top of this pipe at about 5000 C. The pitch escaping from the riser still had a much lower temperature than the exhaust gas.
An even harder pitch can be obtained, as has been said previously, by preheating the tar before injecting it into the hot gases, by reducing the quantity of tar injected or by prolonging the duration of the contact of the tar with the hot gases, for example by re-circulating the tar or pitch through the same or other riser pipes according to the invention.
One of the advantages of the invention, when it is carried out in the apparatus shown, is that the tar is subjected to a high temperature only for a short period of time and that the residue of the tar is not heated up to hot gas temperature but escapes at a much lower temperature-. The,; or- dron is nevertheless subjected to the action of heating and
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
distillation of hot gases and is distilled efficiently.
As a result, a low carbon pitch can be produced directly without an appreciable increase in carbon content over the normal content of the tar from which the pitch was produced.
Instead of passing the tar only once in contact with the hot coke oven gases, one can circulate again one or more times through the same still, or pass through. a. or several other distillation apparatus, the tar or pitch derived from this tar, in order to subject it to further distillation and produce a harder pitch. Instead of producing a low melting point pitch, around 42 C., harder pitches with a higher melting point can be produced, for example, melting pitches at 60-65 C.
(melting point obtained by the cube method in water), pitches melting towards
80 C. (air bath method), a pitch melting at 100 C. or even harder pitches which are sufficiently fluid at high temperatures to be able to circulate until their melting point has been raised to the degree. desired or until their fluidity has subsided to a point where it impedes circulation.
The gases leaving the pipe rising at a temperature close to 500 C., for example, can be subjected to additional cooling by jets of ammoniacal liquor before reaching the barrel as well as in the barrel itself, so that the gases gases passing from the barrel into the cross pipe have a temperature below 100 ° C., for example. The temperature of the gases at their outlet from the transverse pipe and at the moment when they enter the condensers or refrigerants can for example be close to 78 to 80 C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
In the battery of fig. 2, most furnaces are fitted with riser pipes of conventional construction, these pipes possibly having ammoniacal liquor injectors in the gooseneck and in the barrel to separate a considerable quantity of heavy tar in the barrel and to deliver low-tar gas refrigerants or condensers. In this case, the tar produced by most of the battery ovens will be collected in the tar container where it will be separated from the ammonia liquor.
This tar can be dehydrated and used as a destined oudron. be distilled in the special distillation apparatus of the rising pipes according to the invention, in which case it would be brought to the dehydrated and preheated state in intimate contact with the hot gases leaving the coke oven, with a view to using the calories of these gases to distill tar and produce pitch.
It suffices to provide a few coke ovens with the riser pipes according to the invention to distill the tar produced by the remainder of the battery, even in the case of a battery of sixty ovens. When the tar separated in the barrel is subjected to further distillation in the manner described, the oil vapors separating from the tar during the distillation return with the gases. in the barrel and correspondingly increase the oil vapor content of these gases. If the tar thus distilled is a heavy tar, the amount of vapor separated will be less than that which would be separated if the tar contained all, or nearly all, of the condensable oils of the coke oven gases.
In other words, if relatively heavy tar is collected and relatively light oils or oils containing relatively light tar are
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
then separated in the refrigerants or condensers the relatively heavy tar will contain less distillation oils read when all the elements of the tar are condensed together or mixed after condensation at various points of the recovery apparatus, In the latter case, a quantity more vapors will be distilled from the tar and the vapor content of the coke oven gases will be correspondingly increased.
By regulating the temperature and the operation with the barrel, most of the oils which one wishes to obtain can be separated and delivered to the condensers or refrigerants to be recovered there in such a form that they no longer need to be subjected to a new one. distillation.
Some of the oils will separate with the tar in the barrel and be returned to the special pipes :: mounts for further distillation, but by grumbling the distillation and the action of the barrel one can reduce to a value very low the quantity of oil which it is necessary to redistillate so that it separates in the condensers or refrigerants ,,
It is obviously not necessary to subject all the tar produced by the coke oven batteries to a new distillation in the manner described, only a part can be redistilled:
. Likewise, instead of distilling tar from the same battery, tar produced by some other battery or derived from some other source can be distilled in an analogous manner.
The arrangement of fig. 3 allows the tar or pitch to circulate again one or more times in the same apparatus with a view to subjecting it to repeated distillation to remove a progressively increasing quantity of vaporizable oil and produce a pitch of hardness
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
desired.
A tar having. been driven once through the apparatus and collected as pitch may be returned through the same apparatus or through a different apparatus, the pitch resulting from this new circulation being kept separate, and this operation may be repeated as needed. - as many times as you can desire o You can still circulate a large quantity of tar several times and bring the pitch back to the same mass of pitch by progressively distilling the tar and gradually increasing the pitch point. melting the pitch until the entire tar charge has been converted to pitch of the desired melting point
The riser pipe and circulation pipes etc.
are shown schematically in the drawings and without a heat-insulating coating, but it is obvious that in places where it is desirable to prevent the loss of heat by radiation, to reduce this loss or to prevent the excessive cooling of the circulation pipes, etc. . these pipes, the rising pipes and the communication pipes through which the gases pass may be provided with a heat-insulating coating.
In addition, the hot gases resulting from the distillation of the coal in the coke oven may be cooled to some extent before being brought into contact with the tar provided the temperature is still high enough to determine the desired distillation of the tar. and the production of pitch using this tar. However, it is advantageous to use the hot gases at their maximum temperature immediately upon exiting the coke ovens, using them as described.
A particular construction of a modified riser pipe has been described and shown which can advantageously be substituted for the riser pipe of furnaces of the construction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
present, but it is evident that, as regards the more general characteristics of the invention, it can be applied to an apparatus of somewhat modified construction in which the hot gases are employed in the manner described for the distillation of tar and the production of pitch.
