<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Une car- taine résistance à la pénétration arrasée des branches a dans la courroie est due à ce que le s pointe s f doi- vent y pénétrer plus avalât mais comme les boucles d font davantage saillie ce sont elles qui reçoivent tout d'abord la pression de sorte qu'elle s'écrasent en tournant autour despointes f (nai ssan ce s des parties contrecoudées);
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY FILED IN SUPPORT OF THE APPLICATION FOR A PATENT OF INVENTION Improvements made to junction devices for transmission belts.
The object of this invention is to improve the joining devices for transmission belts and relates more particularly to the type of joining produced by means of a certain number of separate metal wire hooks having a V-shaped view from the side, the branches of which V being folded inwards and tapered at points intended to sink into the end of the belt.
Such hooks are attached to the ends to be joined of the belt either by driving their points there by means of a wooden mallet while maintaining said hooks in a suitable anvil to keep them apart.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
desired either by making them enter it using a mechanical control press or ad hoc hand tools, the goal to be achieved in all cases being to force the loop-shaped heads or tops of the hooks to protrude from the end of the belt for the sole purpose that when the two ends to be joined are brought together, these loops become entangled and are thus kept entangled by a gut rope pin,
metal wire or another similar material acting as a hinge when the belt hugs the pulley. Practice has shown that the belt hooks thus established present certain drawbacks, particularly this only when their points are driven into the pulley. The thickness of the belt, they are approximately perpendicular to its upper and lower faces, so that they tend to come loose as a result of the tension due to the work of the belt itself and its bending around the pulleys ,, especially small diameter pulleys.
The aim of the present invention is to obviate these drawbacks. To this end, it essentially consists in bending outwards each of the branches of the V-shaped hook at a small distance from its end so as to give rise to a rounded loop connected by a counterbend at an acute angle to the point. terminal implantation.
The arrangement is designed so that when the terminal points of these branches are driven through the thickness of the belt to the position they are to occupy there, they drown themselves therein.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
folding in the longitudinal direction of the belt and in each case forms a kind of hook which absolutely prevents the hook from disengaging from the belt when it is subjected to the ordinary forces inherent in the transmission.
In the attached drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hook of ordinary construction in its position of depression or implantation in a transmission belt.
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 showing the faulty implantation of the old model crocnet in the thickness of the belt.
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the improved hook, object of the invention, prior to its insertion into the belt.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 but showing the hook already partially implanted in the belt.
Figure 5 is another view similar to Figure 3 but showing the hook completely implanted in the belt.
Figure 6 is a plan view showing a series of such hooks implanted in the joint end of a belt.
If we refer to figures 1 and 2 which represent a hook of the same type but of an old model, we will notice that the branches a of this hook are straight and folded inwards at their pointed ends b to be able to sink into the belt e where these same pointed ends come to occupy the position shown in figure 2.
In contrast to this, the invention consists (see Figures 3 to 6) against
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bend the arms or branches a of each hook to give rise outwardly to rounded loops d so that, when said branches are driven or implanted in the belt, it is their points e which first enter it over a certain thickness (figure 4) until the branches a come to rest parallel or approximately against the upper and lower faces of the belt c, after which, continuing to exert pressure on the loops dy penetrate in turn until said branches a are flushed out. level of said faces that is to say embedded in the thickness of the belt.
A good resistance to the smoothed penetration of the branches a into the belt is due to the s point sf having to penetrate more downstream but as the loops d protrude more they are the ones which first receive the pressure so that they are crushed by turning around the points f (nai ssan ce s of the bent parts);
it follows that when the branches a manage to starraser at the level of the two faces of the belt (figure 5) the s pointsese are folded back in their thickness in hairpins or more closely which absolutely prevents the hooks from disengage from the belt under the action of the longitudinal traction forces it undergoes during its work, both flat and by following the curvature of the pulleys,
These hooks of improved construction have the advantage of being combined with a rod 1 suitably attached to them and serving to brace them at the required spacing before they are driven into the belt and to withstand the tension forces which they are subjected to.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
undergo after their depression in (Figures 4 and 5), this rod 1 also helps prevent the hooks from being torn out of the belt.
The curved loops shown in Figures 3 to 5 can be provided either in the form of integral parts, or in the form of parts attached to hooks whose branches a are of equal length or of unequal length, the latter solution being pre- cut (Figures 3 and 5) the short branches alternating with the long branches on each side of the belt (Figure 6).
