  HON. CHARLES ALGERNON PARSONS

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF STRIPES.

    METALS SUITABLE FOR FORMING TURBINE FINS This invention relates to the manufacture of metal strips and is especially applicable to the rolling of strips by an extension process, such as that used for the rolling of turbine fins. .

   In the particular case of reaction turbine fins, integrally formed with their roots by a rolling process, the blank or billet has a root portion, approximating the final shape and a part- tail to be extended and shaped by rolling to form the lamellar protrusion which constitutes the fin proper. If, as is the ordinary case, the fin portion of the billet receives, for convenience, a rectangular or other section of simple shape, the fins are found to bend to one side during rolling, to because of the greater elongation of that part of the billet which provides the thinnest edge.

   When the strips are rolled into great lengths, there is no difficulty in establishing guides to keep them straight, but with short lengths and especially in the case already mentioned, where. each fin is part of its root, there can hardly be any question of such guidance.

   The main objective of the present invention is to overcome

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 such difficulties.

   For this purpose: the invention consists mainly in a method of manufacturing metal strips of asymmetric profile with or without a base coming from one piece, of a different cross section such as is used for the finning of turbines, wherein the blank or billet receives an initial curvature so that the uneven elongation of different parts of the asymmetric profile during the current stretching process, such as rolling, causes the strip to straighten out or become less curved.

   This invention also includes the methods of manufacturing such metal strips described below and also the blanks or blanks, from which such strips are produced, and the resulting products such as turbine blades.

   With reference to the accompanying drawings which represent in diagrammatic form one of the types of the invention: Figure 1 shows in solid lines a blank or billet of a turbine blade, suitable for a cylindrical rotor and having a curved portion forming a blade , the finished fin being indicated in dotted lines. FIG. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, while Figure 3 shows a modified blank form for a conical rotor.

   By giving the invention its effect in the form indicated, used by way of example, in the manufacture of reaction turbine fins, the blank or the billet (see fig. 1 and 2) has a base rectangular root a of uniform thickness and a tail forming fin b, rectangular in cross section, protruding from one side of the base and of the same thickness.

  The fin portion b of the blank, instead of coinciding in direction with the finished fin, is curved as a whole (see solid line drawing in fig. 1), towards the side where the thinnest edge of the blank will be located. finite fin. Such a curved blank may be interval-rolled in the usual manner, the plane of curvature of the fin portion of the blank extending into what is substantially the common tangent plane of the two interlocking rolls.

 valle, at about their point of operation ...

   If the initial curvature of the blank is properly chosen, the extra elongation on the side of the fin portion which corresponds to the thinner edge b 'of the finished fin will cause the blank to become less curved. for each rolling operation and finally to become straight, as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 1.

     - The blank as described above, with rectangular base, is suitable for cylindrical rotors or stators, but the part forming the root can be modified, as indicated at a 'in fig. 3, to make it suitable for conical rotors or stators or other constructions.

   We wish to understand that the invention can be applied to uses other than the manufacture of turbine fins, while the detail of the processes as described above can be varied to adapt to particular cases.
