<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
On peut commander soit l'éclairage des phares a- vant, soit l'éclairage du phare antiéblouissant, par des dispositifs indépendants appropriés, ou bien, et mieux, par l'intermédiaire d'un interrupteur unique comprenant un con- tacteur f tel que, dans une de ses positions, il vienne en contact avec un plot fermant le courant sur les phares avant et que, dans une autre de ses positions, il vienne en contact avec un plot g1 fermant le courant sur le phare antiéblouissant;

7It He has made improvements to the restoration of the anti-dazzling headlights on board (its motor vehicles ".
The invention relates to the establishment of anti-dazzling headlights on board vehicles of the type of those in which the body is raised relative to the path on which they travel; and it concerns more specifically (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these vehicles, automobiles.
Its aim, above all, is to make the said means such that they better respond to the desiderata of practice.
It mainly consists in having vehicles of the type in question include lighting means such as the axis of the light beam (direct, reflected or refracted) that they emit either substantially parallel to the longitudinal plane of the vehicle, or located below the body, and as close as possible to the path on which

cule the latter.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application as well as certain embodiments of said provisions; and more particularly still, and as new industrial products, headlights of the type in question established in accordance with these same provisions, the special components and tools specific to their assembly, as well as vehicles, in particular cars. - mobile, with similar headlights.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1 and 2 of these drawings show, respectively in plan and in elevation, a headlight mounted on an automobile chassis in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 3 shows, in elevation, a headlight erected on an automobile chassis in accordance with a second embodiment of the invention.
Figs. 4 to 7 show, on a larger scale, and respectively in elevation, in side view, in section along 6-6 ig. 5 and in partial rear view, a mechanical and electrical control device to be fitted to the headlights of the type in question and established in accordance with the invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts to which it seems that preference should be given, having an automobile comprising, as usual, headlights used for normal illumination, and proposing to provide said vehicle with anti-dazzling illumination means for road users facing the vehicle, the headlights.

ordinary res being at this moment extinct, one proceeds as follows, or in a similar way.
Said means are established in such a way that the axis of the light beam (direct, reflected or refracted) emitted and projected through them, is substantially parallel to the longitudinal plane of the chassis of the automobile, is located below the body and the as close as possible to the path on which the latter is traveling.
@ These means of illumination can consist of
EMI3.1
by an ordinary headlight µ¯ which is arranged so little divergent in the direction of the height, but e that the beam which it emits, beam / being able to extend as desired in the direction of the width , is located below the chassis and as close as possible to the raceway, said beam being direct, in the case where the headlight is mounted under the chassis b of the automobile and preferably towards the rear of that - here (as shown on figs 1 and 2) reflected or refracted, in the case where the headlight is mounted anywhere in the automobile, for example on the rear of the latter, the emitted beam being directed towards the Raceway,
and a suitable device such as a mirror c reflecting the beam under the frame forward, as desired (Fig. 3).
In all cases, the axis of the light beam has a direction such - this axis being able, if necessary, to be somewhat inclined towards the ground - that in front of the car, an illumination is obtained consisting of a sheet of diffused rays and therefore non-dazzling but which illuminate the path over an area largely sufficient to allow safe driving.
Means are used to protect the headlight lamp against impacts, stones, dust, etc. raised by the running of the automobile, means which can be constituted by a cylindrical sheet metal tube, for example, fixed to the frame, axially and in front of the headlight a and by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a valve e suitable for closing off the front part of the tube during the non-operation of the headlight; a seal of a flexible material, such as rubber, is advantageously used to prevent dust, water, etc. to enter the tube.
The axis of the tube is given an inclination such that it coincides with the axis of the light beam that is to be obtained.
The ordinary glass of the headlights can advantageously be omitted, in order to prevent the light rays from being intercepted by the deposition of mist on said glass.
So that the headlight can be easily visited (maintenance, change of lamp, etc.) it is mounted in a removable way, for example by hinging on the tube.
It is possible to control either the illumination of the front headlights, or the illumination of the anti-dazzling headlight, by appropriate independent devices, or else, and better still, by means of a single switch comprising a contactor f such as , in one of its positions, it comes into contact with a stud closing the current on the front headlights and that, in another of its positions, it comes into contact with a stud g1 closing the current on the anti-dazzling headlights;
the same contactor control axis f1 can also be used to open and close valve e, this valve having to be closed when.the headlight µ¯ does not work and when the front headlights are on..A . To this end, this axis can act by an appropriate transmission, for example by gears h and 1. on a pulley j¯ connected by means of a cable k to the aforesaid valve .1; The diameter of the pulley and the length of the cable being such that, when the contactor is between the pads and k1, the valve e is closed and remains closed when said con-

tactor comes into contact tAj cl. It is only when the contact ¯ comes into contact with 1 that the valve is or- "Here

green.
The gears, h and i can advantageously be different, with a view to facilitating the opening of the valve while the vehicle is in motion.
The control of the axis f1 can be carried out by a handle 1 fixed on the latter and which. can be actuated from the steering wheel of the automobile by means of an appropriate device such as a flexible m acting against the action of a return spring n, so that the switch can be fixed under the automobile near the headlight a, for example on a side member o of the bodywork.
As a result, an anti-dazzling headlight is obtained, the operation of which is sufficiently obvious that it is unnecessary to give additional information about it.
As goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to the embodiments of its various parts which have more especially been indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
