  A   -

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

     L'arbre 24 continuant à tourner, les extrémités intérieures es leviers 105 tombent des dents 91, pendant que les extrémités

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

  Improvements in the manufacture of bushels.

   The present invention relates to closed bushels and to apparatus and methods for making them.

   When such bushels are used for pouring cement beams in floors or the like, it is desirable that the ends of such bushels be closed. When using open ended bushels, a large amount of the still plastic concrete penetrates these open ends and is lost. The excess concrete adds considerable dead weight to the floor which must be supported by the beams.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

Using the method and apparatus described below, closed end plugs can be fabricated, employing a current design of a continuous hollow strand log molding machine. Preferably, this sausage is forced through an extruder and placed on a conveyor. After the strand has been cut into sections, the conveyor rotates the sections or bushels to the desired position so that their ends can be closed by plates cut from continuously moving strips of material. These bands are preferably forced through the same extruder as the hollow coil, and at the same time as the latter.

   The hollow coil can be cut into sections either before or after being placed on the conveyor.

   The conveyor comprises several successive parts moving at different speeds, between which is inserted a turntable. The successive parts of the conveyor move at increasing speeds so that the cut bushels can stop on the turntable for a sufficient time so that their ends can be closed and they can themselves be removed. of this plate without hindering the continuous operation of the extruder. To close the ends of the plugs, the turntable rotates the plugs by a sufficient amount so that their open ends face toward the sides of the conveyor.

   When a plug is in this position, cutters cut sections in the side bands and press them against the open ends of the plug which are wetted before receiving these closure plates.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   After its ends have been thus closed, the log is pushed over a part of the conveyor located beyond the turntable and moving at a speed sufficiently high to remove the finished bushel from the turntable before a another bushel is placed on it. a system of stops and electrical contacts is provided to stop the movement of the bushels when they are brought to the turntable. The stops also control, preferably with the aid of electro-magnetic devices, a clutch mechanism for rotating the turntable.

   The control system includes devices for selectively clearing stops, to allow completed logs to leave the turntable when closed, and to stop the ball arriving on the turntable.

   By employing an electric control system, the foregoing operations can be carried out at a relatively high speed and changes to the settings of the parts constituting the device can be easily made.

The latter is of a well known shape and is placed at the end of the tube. end of a screw press 7 which forces the material to form a continuous hollow body.

   On each side of the extruder 6 are shaped like a bundle dies 10 intended to form strips or plates 11 of the same material as the coil 5. The bands 11 are separated from the coil 5 by the walls 12. The walls 12 may be provided with flute plates 14 for making flutes 15 along the inner edges of the bands 11. The screw press 7 is operated continuously and at a speed depending on the constitution and thickness of the walls. of the bushel. As the strand 5 is forced out of the chopper 6 so that its open ends are perpendicular to the strips 11, it is necessary that the sections or bushels 2 be turned 90 before applying the sections of strips 11 on. their open ends 4.

   As shown in Fig. 3, when the strand 5 is pushed out of the extruder 6, it passes over a plate 16 carried by the press 7 and thence onto the conveyor 17. This conveyor can be constituted by an endless belt. its speed is greater than that with which the coil 5 moves on the plate 16, so that the sections of this coil arriving at

 conveyor 17 can be transported quickly enough to be able to be turned and closed without hindering the continuous operation of the extruder 6. The coil 5 is cut into sections by a metal wire 18, preferably supported by arms 19 mounted on the strand. plate 16.

   The arms 19 are actuated by any suitable mechanism, not shown. if desired, the cutting wire 18 can be placed so as to separate the sections of the strand 5 when they are already engaged on the conveyor 17.

   However, in this case, care must be taken to prevent the surfaces of the sections 2 from being roughened by friction.

   The bands 11 are conveyed by guides 20 extending parallel to and away from the edges of the plate 16 and the conveyor 17. Near the end of the conveyor 17 the guides 20 are deflected outwards to avoid the edges. turntable 21.

     Dans'Des, deviated parts of the guides 20, there are sprinkler outlets 20a, the purpose of which will be described in detail below.

   The turntable 21 delivers the bushel sections 2 to the conveyor 22, which moves at a significantly greater speed than the conveyor 17, so that these completed sections are removed from the turntable 21 faster than they are. are brought there. The transport of the material leaving the press 7 begins at the plate 16, where the strand 5 is cut into sections 2, which are transported by the conveyor 17 on the turntable 21, at a speed sufficient for this turntable 21 to be able to rotate. approximately 90 and that the ends of sections 2 are

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 closed by means of sections cut in strips 11.

   The completed closed bushels are then removed from the turntable 21 by the combined action of the sections arriving on the plate and the conveyor 22, which has a speed substantially greater than that of the conveyor 1 ?. The difference between the speeds of the conveyors 17 and 22 allows a stop mechanism, which will be described below, to be set in the desired position to stop the incoming section of timber after the completed section has been removed from the frame. turntable 21.

   As shown in Fig2. 3 to 6, cams 23 are mounted on the sides of the conveyor, in line with the axis of the turntable 21, and they serve to close the ends 4 of the sections 2. The cams 23 rotate in synchronism with the movement. of the motor shaft 24 of the rotating plate 21. Each cam 23 actuates a cutting plate 25 and gives it an alternating movement between the faces 26 and 27, formed in the guides 20. Each plate 25 is connected to its cam corresponding 23 by a rod 28 passing through a bearing 29 and by a roller 30 engaged in the groove 31 of the cam 23.

  The movement of the plates 25 is done so that they leave completely free the passage in the guides 20 in their position of greatest retreat, so that the bands 11 can pass in front of the opening existing between the faces 26 and 27. The two ends of the plates 25 being provided with cutting surfaces, the strips 11 are cut into sections the ends of which are smooth and regular. The material separated along the faces 27 and remaining in the guides 20, falls through the openings 32.

   As the bands 11 are continuously forced out of the extruder 6, at the same time as the coil 5,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the speed of movement of these bands 11 in the guides 20 is identical to that of the strand 5 on the plate 16. But as the sections
2 have a faster movement;. On the conveyor 17 and when an appreciable amount of time is required for these sections to be rotated by the turntable 21, a sufficient quantity of material passes through the openings between the faces 26 and 27 to provide the end plates to the plug sections 2, provided however that the width of the strand section cut by the wire 18 is smaller than its length.

   In the event that this width is substantially the same or greater than this length, the speed of the bands 11 in the guides 20 must be increased. This can be achieved by pushing the bands 11 through separate, different extruders. of the extruder 6.

   When the bushel sections 2 arrive on the turntable 21, they advance until they are stopped by one of the stops 34. Each of these stops 34 protrudes upwardly through a opening 35 of the turntable 21 and is urged towards the center thereof by a spring 36. Each stop 34 is provided with a rod 37 carrying a roller 38 moving in a fixed cam groove 39. The position of the 'stop 34 is thus regulated by this cam 39.

  Each stop 34 is provided with an electrical contact 40 maintained normally open by the spring 36.

   The cam 39 has three lowered rigid parts 41 and a flexible part 42. The lowered parts 41 are arranged so as to ensure the lowering of the stops 34 at three points of the circumference of the cam. These lowering points are respectively opposite the cams 23 and the axis line of the conveyor 17, in order to allow the sections

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 belt 11 and the bushel sections 2 to pass on the turntable 21.

   As shown in fig. 5, the flexible part 42 is constituted by bars 44 fixed by means of hinges 45 to the sides of the cam 39. The bars 44 are provided with notches 46 at their outer ends. These pins 46 are placed in tents 47 of a yoke 48, which is normally pulled down by the springs 49. An armature 50 of an electromagnet 51 is attached to the bottom of the yoke 48. When the current passes through the winding 52 of the electromagnet 51, the caliper raises the bars 44 in the plane of the sides of the cam 39, thus raising the stop 34 above the surface of the turntable, - 21.

   The part 42 of the cam is intended to stop the plug section 2 at the rear of the turntable 2,1, prior to the rotating movement, and for this action this part 42 is lifted only for a short period of time. . The rest of the time, stop 34 is in the lowered position.

   As shown in Figures 4, 5 and 7, as soon as any stopper 34 is pressed backward against its spring 36, the corresponding contact 40 closes. This closure completes the circuit of the supply current, consisting of the conductor 54, a collector ring 55 mounted on the shaft 24 of the turntable, the winding 56 of an electromagnet 57, the contact 40, a second collector ring 58 on the shaft 24, a conductor 59 and another conductor 60 of this circuit. The action of any electromagnet 57 causes clutch 61, carried by shaft 24, to engage a bevel gear 62, operated by shaft 64, in order to rotate turntable 21.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   The plug section 2 arriving on the turntable 21 pushes the completed section 2 on the conveyor 22, and the latter, by its movement on this conveyor, closes a contact 65, which is in the circuit of an electro- magnet 66, which in turn closes a contact 67 connecting winding 52 to conductors 54 and 60 of the power circuit. As soon as the electromagnet 52 comes into action, the stopper 34 placed in the flexible part 42 of the cam is lifted in order to stop the incoming plug section. Closure of contact 40 by the incoming valve section switches on the collector ring 58, as has already been described above.

   When the ring.:. 58 is switched on, a ring 68 having a plurality of insulated sections 70 on its outer face, and a continuous conductor on its inner face, is switched on.

  A brush 72 rubs against the outer surface of the ring 68 and is connected to an electromagnet 74, the other end of which is connected to the conductor 75 extending the conductor 60 of the supply circuit. Accordingly, the brush 72 completes a circuit, through the ring 68, between the conductors 54 and 60. When the brush faces the isolated sections 70 of the ring 68, this circuit is open. Closure of the circuit by the electromagnet 74 opens the contact 67, consequently switches the electromagnet 52 off and allows the caliper 48 to be returned to its lower position by the springs 49. The isolated parts 70 are arranged around the shaft 24 so as to face the brush 72 at times when one of the stops 34 is to stop a plug section 2 on the turntable 21.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   As shown in figs. 4 and 6, the clutch 61 is constituted by a sleeve 76 mounted on the shaft 24 and having four arms 77 extending outwardly at the ends of which are articulated levers 78. The outer end of each lever 78 is connected to the frame of one of the electromagnets 57. The inner end of each lever 78 is provided with a pin 79 which engages a slot 80 of a cleat 81 which extends to the bottom. The exterior of the clutch part 82 movable longitudinally on the shaft 24. This clutch part 82 is keyed to this shaft 24 and is normally pushed upwards by springs 84. The underside of this part 82 is provided with teeth 85, able to engage in the teeth 86 of the bevel gear 62.

   With this arrangement, the clutch part 82 is normally disengaged from the bevel gear 62, due to the action of the springs 84. However, when any of the electromagnets 57 is switched on, the corresponding lever 78 lowers clutch part 82 and engages teeth 85 and 86, shaft 24 rotating accordingly during the period when electromagnet 57 remains on. As soon as the outgoing plug section 2 opens the contact 65 and the electromagnet 74 is switched on to open the contact 67, the stop 34 located opposite the part 42 of the cam is lowered and its contact 40 opens, thereby switching off the winding 56 of the electromagnet 57 while the clutch part 82 is released from the pinion 62 by the springs 84.

   Although the angular movement of the turntable 21 is shown, for each operation of the clutch mechanism 61, to be substantially 90, it should be understood that it can be changed, if desired,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 since this movement is regulated by the number of electro-magnets56 and contacts.40 with which the apparatus is provided.

   As shown in fig. 6, to actuate the cams 23, the shaft 24 is provided with a collar 90 having a certain number of teeth 91 directed upwards. The number of teeth 91 corresponds to the number of stops desired during a complete revolution of the turntable 21. Pinions 92 are continuously operated by the pinion 62, and they are provided with teeth 94 which engage. with clutch teeth 95, in order to actuate the shafts 96 connected to the cams 23 by intermediate gears 97. The teeth 95 are carried by a cylindrical cam 100 placed on the shaft 96, and pushed to bring these teeth meshing with the pinions 92, by springs 101. The displacement of the cylindrical cams 100 inwardly under the influence of the springs 101 is resisted by pins 102 engaged in the grooves 103 of these cams.

   These pins 102 are pushed upward by coil springs 104. Levers 105 are pivotally mounted on the shaft support frame 96. The inner ends of these levers 105 slide over the teeth 91 of the collar 90 and their clamps. outer ends pivot on pegs 102.

  As the shaft 24 rotates, the inner ends of the levers 105 move up onto the teeth 91, disengaging the pins 102 from the cylindrical cams 100. The release of the cams 100 causes their inward movement as a result of the expansion. springs 101, engages teeth 94 and 95 and therefore produces movement of cams 23.

     As the shaft 24 continues to rotate, the inner ends of the levers 105 drop from the teeth 91, while the ends

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 pins 102 slide on the outer surface of cylindrical cams 100. This situation continues until these cams have rotated sufficiently to allow pins 102 to enter grooves 103, under the action of springs 104.

   The continued rotation of the cylindrical cams 100 causes them to move outward, which disengages them from the pinions 92 and stops the movement of the shafts 96 and the cams 23. The dimensions of the pinions 62 and 92 are in such a relationship. that each engagement of the mechanism 61 corresponds to a complete revolution of the cams 23. Since the shaft 24 rotates only during the rotating movement of the plate 21, the cylindrical cams 100 are released only at the end of each rotating movement of this. plate 21, and consequently the subsequent rotation of the cams 23 ensures the advancement of the plates 25, actuated, by these cams, in order to close the ends of the plugs by means of the sections of bands 11, in due time.

   After the ends 4 of the bushels 2 have been closed by the band sections 11, the incoming bushel 2 pushes the finished bushel and advances it enough to be driven by the conveyor 22. As this part of the conveyor moves. moves at a higher speed than conveyor 17, the plug leaving the turntable does not remain in contact with the plug arriving on this plate and closes switch 65, which causes stop 34 to stand up in front of the turntable. bushel arriving. Upon striking this stop, the latter closes the corresponding switch 40, which completes the circuit actuating the clutch 61.

   This rotates the turntable 21 by the desired amount and the cams 23 make a full revolution, thus causing the plates 25 to cut sections in the strips 11 and to press them.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 against the ends of the plug 2. The ends of the logs 2 are moistened on the turntable 21, by the spray jets 20a, prior to the application of the obturator plates.

   All these operations are carried out automatically, continuously and at a speed determined by that of the delivery of the screw press 7.

   It is understood that numerous modifications can be made to the devices described without departing from the principle of the invention.
