 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  "Improvements to fluid pressure brake apparatus control systems".

   The invention relates to fluid pressure brake devices and its main object is an improved brake control system.

   According to the main device of the invention, the pressure of a control chamber acts on a brake control valve system and the pressure of this chamber is automatically maintained at a determined value to prevent a variation. unwanted pressure in the chamber disturbs the correct operation of the control valve.

   In the attached schematic drawing, the single figure shows in section the brake control valve system established in accordance with. to the invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The apparatus consists of, brake cylinder 1, constant pressure reservoir 2, service reservoir 3, brake pipe 4, pilot service valve 5, service clamp valve 6, clamp valve 'emergency 7, the tank loading valves 8 and 9, the quick release valve 10 and the emergency release valve 11,
The pilot service valve 5 or regulating valve comprises a series of flexible diaphragms 12, 13, 14, 15 integral with one another and spaced so as to constitute closed chambers.

  The chamber 16 to the left of the diaphragm 12 communicates with a pipe 17 going to the general pipe 4. The chamber 18 between the diaphragms 12 and 13 communicates with the atmosphere by a channel 19. The chamber 20 between the diaphragms 13 and 14 communicates with a duct 21. The chamber 22 between the diaphragms 14 and 15 communicates with the atmosphere through the channel 23 and the chamber 24 to the right of the diaphragm 15 communicates through the oonduite25 with the reservoir 2 at constant pressure.

   The rod 26 on which the diaphragms are mounted controls a spool 27 and in the release position of the spool chamber 20 communicates with the exhaust duct 28. In the clamped position the chamber 20 communicates with the spool. pipe 29 going to the service tank 3.

   The service clamping valve 6 comprises the piston 30 contained in the chamber 31, the release spool 32 contained in the chamber 33 and the supply valve 34 contained in the chamber 35 and various members are controlled by the displacement. piston 30.The chamber 33 communicates via line 36 with brake cylinder 1 and chamber 35 communicates with the service tank via line 29.

   The chamber 31 of the piston'30 communicates through the conduit 37 with the chamber 38 on one side of the flexible diaphragm 39, This diaphragm

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 actuates the spool 40 which controls the communication of the duct 21 with the chamber 38. The chamber 41, to the right of the diaphragm 39, communicates with the duct 48 and contains the spring 43 which exerts its pressure on the diaphragm.

   The emergency tightening valve 7 'comprises the piston 44 contained in the chamber 45 in communication with the general pipe via the conduit I7; it also comprises the main drawer 46 and the graduation drawer 47 enclosed in the chamber 48 and these two drawers are actuated by piston 44.

   The quick-acting valve 10 comprises the piston 49 contained in the chamber 50 in communication with the conduit 51 going to the seat of the spool 46 and it also comprises the exhaust valve 52 of the general line enclosed in the chamber 53; this valve is actuated by piston 49 and chamber 53 is in communication with the general pipe via pipe 17.

   The emergency supply valve 11 comprises the valve piston 54, the chamber 55 of which on the right communicates through the constricted channel 56 with the chamber 57 in communication with the duct 58 opening into the seat of the spool 46 * When the piston 54 rests on its seat, its surface outside the seat, in communication with the conduit 29 going to the service tank, is isolated from its surface inside the seat, which is in communication by the conduit 59 with the conduit going to the brake cylinder, conduit 59 containing the constricted channel plug 60.

   The reservoir charging valve 8 controls the charging of the reservoir 2 at constant pressure and comprises the diaphragm head 61 connected to the accordion diaphragm 62; the head 61 controls the spool 63.The charging valve 9 controls the charging of the service tank 3 and this valve comprises the diaphragm head 64 connected to the diaphragm in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   accordion 65 and this head controls the drawer 66.

   In operation, when pressurized air is sent into the general pipe 4, the air flows through the pipe 17 of the general pipe into the chamber 45 of the emergency clamping valve 7 and through the conduit 17 passing through the check valve 67, it arrives at the seat of the spool 46. When the emergency clamping valve 7 is in the released position as shown in the drawing, the line 17 connected to the con-
46 general pick is located opposite the channel 68 of the slide so that the air coming from the general pipe flows into the chamber 48 through this nanal 68 and through the oanal controlled by the check valve 69 of the tirtir 47, The air flows from the chamber 48 through the conduit 70 and the conduit 71 into the chamber 72 of the quick-acting valve,

When the pressure of the general pipe has been raised to a determined value, the spool 63 of the loading valve 8 is moved and it places the pipe 17 in communication with the chamber 73 connected to the pipe 25. The constant pressure tank 2 is then charged with air at the pressure of the general pipe. In the same way the spool 66 of the charging valve 9 is moved and it places the pipe 17 in communication with the chamber 74 connected to the pipe 29 going to the service tank 3 and thus this reservoir is also charged at the pressure .de the general pipe.

   The chamber 16 of the pilot valve 5 being charged at the normal pressure of the general pipe, the proportions of the various members are such that the tirbir 27 is retained in the upright position, in which position the chamber 20 communicates with the pipe d. 'exhaust 28. The chamber 20 being at atmospheric pressure, the chamber SI (of the service clamping valve) is also at atmospheric pressure since these two chambers are placed in communication by the conduit 37, the chamber

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

38 and the conduit 21 when the drawer 40 is in the position shown in the drawing where the conduit 75 coincides with the conduit 21.

   The chamber 31 being at atmospheric pressure the piston
30 occupies the right-hand position shown in the drawing and in this position the chamber 33 communicates through the channel 6 of the spool 32 with the exhaust channel to the atmosphere 77. The chamber 33 communicates with the conduit 36 of the brake cylinder which thus is released into the atmosphere and the brakes are released.

   If it is desired to perform a service application of the brakes, the pressure of the brake pipe is reduced in the usual manner and consequently the pressure in the chamber 16 of the diaphragm is reduced to the same value,
The pressures on the two faces of the diaphragms of the valve 5 do not balance out so that the air pressure in the chamber 24 pushes the diaphragms to the left, the spool 27 is moved and it closes the channel of exhaust 28 and it discovers the duct 29 going to the chamber 20,
The service tank 3 supplies pressurized air to the chamber 20 through the conduit 29 and continues to supply said chamber until its pressure has reached a sufficient degree to push the diaphragm to the right due to the difference in area of diaphragm 14 from the area of diaphragm 13.

   The air pressure in the chamber 21 is raised to the degree of the pressure of the chamber 20 which sends air to it through the duct 21, the duct 78, the chamber 38 and the duct 37; it resists that the piston 30 is moved to the left by driving the spool 32 which closes the exhaust channel 77 and at the same time the piston 30 releases the valve 34 on its seat.

   The valve 34 being detached from its seat, the service tank 3 sends pressurized air through the conduit 29 and the chamber 35 into the chamber 33 and from there through the conduit 21 to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 brake cylinder I. The pressure in the brake cylinder rises until the pressure in chamber 33 exerted on piston 30 slightly exceeds the pressure in chamber 3I; then the piston moves sufficiently to the right to allow - the closing of the valve 34.

   If there is a leak in chamber 31 or in chamber 20, the diaphragms of the valve system 5 are pushed to the left and again open the communication between the supply duct 29 and the chamber 20 and there is admission. sufficient air to compensate for leaks and keep the chamber pressure substantially constant.

   If there is a leak in the brake cylinder, the corresponding drop in pressure in chamber 33 moves piston 30 to the left, valve 34, opens which allows pressurized air to feed into the cylinder. brake to compensate for the leak.

   The piston 44 of the emergency tightening valve is also pushed by the pressure reduction in the general pipe until the piston attacks the elastic stop 78.The auxiliary spool 47 is then moved relative to the main spool 46, but not enough to uncover the channel 79. In this movement the channel 80 of the spool 47 coincides with the channel 81 of the spool 46 which in turn coincides with the exhaust duct 82, thus @ pressurized air s' escapes from chamber 48 and quick-acting chamber 72 to prevent piston 44 from continuing to move into an emergency clamping position.

   In this movement, the cavity 83 of the auxiliary spool 47 places the channel 84 in communication with the channel 68 and the air escapes from the general pipe 4 through the duct 17 into the duct 85 and passing through the check valve 86, it goes to pipe 36 of the brake cylinder,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

This produces a local exhaust of air from the general line to perform a rapid action in series for a service tightening.

   When a sudden reduction in pressure in the brake pipe is effected for emergency brake application, the piston 44 is brought to the emergency clamping position by compressing the elastic stopper 78. In this movement of the piston, the spool 47 first discovers channel 79 and chamber 48 sends pressurized air through duct 51 to the piston
49 The piston in movement opens the exhaust valve 52 and allows air to escape from the general line into the atmosphere through line 17 and channel 87.

   Then the spool 46 is moved and its cavity 88 communicates the conduit 71 with the conduit 51. The chamber 50 is communicated with the quick-acting chamber 72 and the piston 49 is held in its position with the valve 52 open. , until the pressure in the quick-acting chamber 72 drops as a result of air flowing through the constricted channel 89 of the piston 49.

   In the release position of the spool 46, for emergency tightening, the cavity 90 communicates the duct 58 with the duct 89 so that the chamber 57 of the valve 11 for the high pressure emergency tightening is charged with air through the service tank 3. @ In the emergency clamping position, the cavity 91 of the spool 46 places the duct 58 in communication with the exhaust channel 93, so that the air escapes from the chamber 57 and also the chamber 55 and the valve piston 54 is then moved to the right The pressurized air from the reservoir $ Service 3 is sent directly to the duct 59 and from there through the duct 36 to the brake cylinder 1 .

   During the action of the pilot valve 5, it is desirable that the pressure on the diaphragm 15 be kept constant, since the control of the pressure in the application of the brakes depends on this pressure. variations in the pressure of the chamber 24 due to leaks from the reservoir 2 and to compensate for these leaks, the auxiliary diaphrag 93 is provided, subjected on one side to the pressure of the chamber 24 and of which the other side constitutes the wall of a chamber 94 in communication with the atmosphere through channel 95, This diaphragm is subjected to the pressure of a spring 96,
When the pressure of the reservoir 2 and of the chamber 24 is maintained at the constant pressure at which the apparatus must operate,

  the diaphragm 93 is pushed back against the pressure of the spring 96 and has no action on the diaphragm 15, but if the pressure of the chamber 24 falls below the determined constant pressure within fixed limits, for example 6 kg. to 5.5 kg, per hundred. square, the spring 96 exerts a pressure on the diaphragm 15 in proportion to the pressure drop in the chamber 24 below the determined pressure and thus the pressure on the diaphragm 15 will be kept constant,
The valve 40 and the diaphragm 39 serve to limit the pressure in the brake cylinder during the service application of the brakes. In the service application of the brakes, the chamber 41 is in communication with the atmosphere through the duct. 42,

   the cavity 91 of the emergency clamping slide 46 and the exhaust channel 92 and if the pressure of the chamber 38 exceeds a determined degree sufficient to overcome the pressure of the counter spring 43 this pressure having been calculated for the clamps of service of the brakes, then the repelled diaphragm 39 moves the spool 40 which cuts off the communication between the chamber 20 and the chamber 31. Subsequently the pressure of the chamber 31 can no longer rise in the service application of the brakes and it result that the brake cylinder pressure is limited to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 the corresponding limit pressure supplied in chamber 31.

   In the service application of the brakes, the chamber 41 is placed in communication through the duct 42 and the channel 97 of the spool 46 with the chamber 48 and consequently the pressurized air is sent to, the chamber 41, The diaphragm 39 is in consequence retained in the position where the piston communicates the chamber
20 with the chamber 31 by the combined pressures of the spring 43 and the air pressure in such a way that the piston 30 is subjected to the totality of the achievable pressure and thus the maximum pressure is obtained in the brake cylinder for the emergency brake application.
