 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

    Il est bien évident que l'invention @@@@@@@@@@ n'est limitée ni'aux formes ni aux détails de construction décrits et représentés, mais qu'elle peut donner lieu à des variantes nombreuses. L'étain présente des avantages marqués, mais le

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRIC OVENS
The current. The invention relates to electric furnaces in which the material to be treated or the part of the furnace which contains this material is heated by means of a molten and conductive mass, receiving electrical energy.

   According to the invention, a tin bath is used as an intermediate mass.

   Tin, which melts at 232 C, and only boils at 2,200 C, makes it possible to reach and exceed the temperature of 1500 C, which is difficult to maintain with furnaces with solid metal resistances.

   It also has the advantage of being completely inert with respect to many bodies, and in particular carbon, which allows the use as of refractories based on carbon or graphite.

   Likewise, tin has no effect on nitrogen, which makes it possible to use ovens according to the invention for high temperature syntheses, relating to nitrogen and its compounds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Finally, it has the important advantage of allowing heating at high temperature without any trace of carbon.

   The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two modes of application of the improvement which is the subject of the invention.

   Fig. 1 shows, in schematic vertical section, a crucible furnace for glassworks.

   Fig. 2 is a similar view of a vertical, high frequency passage furnace.

   In fig. 1, 1 designates the refractory crucible containing the composition 2 to be melted. This crucible is immersed in the liquid intermediate mass 3 which itself fills the crucible 4. The latter is completely surrounded by a heat-insulating coating 5. Heating is obtained by induction in single-phase current. The crucible 4 is crossed by a pipe 4a in which is housed a part of the magnetic circuit 6. Around the latter is shown at 7 the primary winding, cooled and protected in the ordinary manner.

   It is the conductive and liquid intermediate mass which constitutes the secondary of the transformer and which is thus brought to the necessary temperature.

   In the variant of FIG. 2, the double-walled crucible 8 contains the intermediate liquid mass. This crucible is surrounded by a heat insulator 9 which fills the insulating casing 10, which carries the inductor winding 11.

   Electric energy is then applied to the conductive bath by induction and it is the latter which, in accordance with the principle of the invention, heats the refractory tube constituting the furnace laboratory.

    It is obvious that the invention is not limited either to the forms or to the construction details described and shown, but that it can give rise to numerous variations. Tin has marked advantages, but the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 gallium could also be used under such satisfactory conditions for lower temperatures when its production has reached industrial scale. It is indeed liquid at ordinary temperature and only boils around 15000C.
 EMI3.1

  Naturally,; jillJb: biJa..x * n.m !!,;, all useful measures must be taken to avoid oxidation of the metal and to reduce the quantity used as much as possible. For this dual purpose, it is advisable to place blocks of graphite in the bath, for example from electrode waste.

   The improvement that is the subject of the invention has the advantage of making it possible to use electrical energy with good efficiency, when it is not possible to apply it directly to the material to be heated.

   It will be noted that, in the examples considered, all electrode consumption is eliminated; the mass of metal constitutes an immobilization made once and for all.

   The receptacle containing the intermediate mass must include the orifioes necessary for the withdrawal thereof.

  This operation can usefully be done as follows, when several ovens are used successively. We can, finally. heating, remove the bath from an oven and place it in a new cold oven, ready to be put into service. This ensures the recovery of a large quantity of heat, recovery which would be impossible in an ordinary furnace.
