 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Gasifier."
The present invention relates to a gasifier applying especially, but not limitingly, to motor vehicles and having for object to supply to the engines, during jolts for example, a mixed gas with very high calorific value. This mixed gas is formed from a mixture of lean gas and water gas produced by causing a current of re-heated air and a stream of water vapor to act respectively on a glowing carbon, all in one and the same compact apparatus and according to a particular arrangement and method of construction exhibiting several advantages, one of the main ones of which is that, in the apparatus according to the invention, it is possible to increase the proportion of gas to gas as desired. 'water contained in the mixed gas produced, in order to obtain,

   a gas with a very high calorific value when the engine must perform particularly high work, such as when the vehicle is going uphill.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The gasifier according to the invention can work at low or high pressure; it will preferably be fueled with charcoal, even in the form of waste, but can in principle consume any substance formed of carbon or containing a high proportion of it.

   The air is forced to pass through the mass of glowing charcoal in a U-shaped path, which doubles the useful path and gives better efficiency for the same width of the apparatus. The heat given off by the formation of lean gas serves simultaneously to produce water vapor, to compensate for the absorption of heat resulting from the formation of gas in the water, and to heat the intake air while reducing the losses by external radiation. The gasifier according to the invention therefore achieves a very rational and very economical production of gas thanks to its method of construction shown without limitation in the appended drawing, in which:
Fig.l is a median vertical section of the gasifier.

   Fig.2 is a horizontal section along the line A-B in the previous one.

   Fig. 3 is a section along line E-F in fig.l showing especially the path of the intake air.

   Fig.4 is a view of the side wall C-D in Fig.2.

   The assembly (fig.l) consists of a tank of any shape, in two parts 1 and 1 'joined in a sealed manner by bolts 12 and of which the lower one 1 must constitute a boiler and also contain another tank' 2 .

   This tank 2 has sealed walls which can expand without inconvenience, for example made of corrugated sheet metal in FIG. 2, is provided with a grid at 3 and constitutes the gasifier proper for the lean gas. Inside 2 is a 4 - 4 'retort fitted with a 3' grid and which extends over the entire height of the device and against the CD wall (fig. 2) so as to leave in the vessel 2 has a U-shaped space specified above.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The tank 2 and the retort 4 will be filled with charcoal which is loaded from the top of the device and accumulates respec- tively in 2 'and 4', which form silos and whose loading orifices 13 and 14 must close hermetically by any device.

   The boiler is placed in the two spaces 18 reserved between the side walls of 1 and 2 and placed in communication by the tubes 17; it may take the simple shape shown in the drawing, or be tubular or the like without falling outside the present patent as long as it is so arranged as to utilize the heat emitted by the gasifier 2.

   The operation of the gasifier is as follows:
In the tank 2 occurs especially, but not always only, the lean gas also called gas to air. It is filled with glowing charcoal which has been ignited in any way, for example by the grid 3 and by a fan, not shown, blowing air under the grid 3.

  When ignition is obtained, all air intake under the ash box is closed, and the air which is then introduced is preheated by circulation around the gasifier (fig.3). This air enters at 15, passes into a reheating channel. 16 which runs along the upper part; 1 (, the boiler 18), bypasses it through the pipe 9, passes into the symmetrical channel 16 'of 16, is brought to the tank 2 through the pipe 8 and is admitted there through one or more orifices, at the right of which additional air enters through the pipes 7-7 '. Inside the tank 2, the gases pass through the mass of incandescent carbon bypassing the horn 4 and the gas to the air produced is directed towards the engine through the pipes 6 and 6 '.

   The retort 4¯ is therefore located at the center of an incandescent mass; it is filled with small-grain charcoal (waste) which are also ignited by the heat produced in 3; we inject, through a perforated pipe 5,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the water vapor supplied from the boiler 18par.le. pipe 21, and thus produces water gas discharged through pipe 19 and led to the engine by the same pipe as the gas to the air with which it mixes. The circulation of gases in the device is therefore maintained by the suction of the motor.

   The production of gas to water is made more or less strong by regulating the admission of steam by an inlet valve 20 placed on the pipe 21. By acting on this single valve 20, it is possible to vary the power. calorific value of the mixed gas and consequently the available power since the proportion of gas to water contained in the mixed gas will be varied.

   It is also possible to produce gas with water or to enrich the lean gas in the tank 2 by an injection of steam supplied by the pipe 23 and regulated by a valve 24, injection made either in the bottom of the tank 2 by the perforated pipe 22, or in the air admitted at 7, 7 '.

   25 is the pressure gauge of the boiler 18, 26 its water level, 27 the drain valve, 28 a safety valve; the boiler is fed at 29 by a small pump controlled by the motor and not shown. A cover 30 covers the pipes 9 and 17 and reduces their cooling.

   The air intake to produce the gas in the tank 2 could be done through the grid 3. In this case the gas circulation in the tank 2 would be done both from the bottom up and bypassing the retort 4.
